Byron Nelson students get potential career experience building solar car
Byron Nelson students work on their vehicle at the Solar Car Challenge

For many adults, the extent of engineering learned in high school ended with basic electrical wiring. For a group of Byron Nelson High School students, it ends with making a solar-powered electric car.

Each summer following their school's opening in 2009, Byron Nelson students have participated in the Solar Car Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway. The event challenges high school students to design, engineer and build solar cars to race against their peers. Students either race at Texas Motor Speedway or complete a cross-country course to a predetermined destination, depending on the race's format for the year.

Durham using new system for real-time feedback of transportation services
A Northwest ISD school bus

Durham, Northwest ISD's transportation service provider, is using a new service to receive real-time feedback about its operations.

Through BusReport, located at www.busreport.com, Durham will record feedback in real time, provide responses, create actionable results and log all events for personnel coaching. This system will provide email updates to the user throughout the review process.

Before the end of 2017, all Durham locations will use the new service.
Read what it's like to be a pro baseball player in an interview with alumnus Tyler Collins
Northwest alumnus Tyler Collins playing for the Detroit Tigers

Tyler Collins graduated from Northwest High School as a decorated baseball player, playing on the varsity team all four years and earning a starting role as a freshman on Baylor's team.

Since then, he has gone on to become the National Junior College Athletic Association's Baseball Player of the Year after transferring from Baylor to Howard College. He intended to play for TCU, but his hard work paid off by being selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. His Tigers debut on March 31, 2014, made him Northwest ISD's first known graduate to play in an MLB game.

Read an interview with Collins by clicking here. The interview is part of the Northwest Navigator, and future issues of the magazine are also slated to include interviews with alumni who have gone on to interesting careers and adventures.
