Our PAWS for Reading program is based on the concept that a pet's non-judgmental acceptance and loving attention can help new and struggling readers feel more comfortable and less self-conscious when reading aloud. These sessions create a forum where readers can practice their skills in a "safe" place without criticism. PAWS' goal is to provide a positive reading experience where the reader builds confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and develop a love for reading. PAWS for Reading sessions are held during the day at schools and in the evening at libraries on a regular, set schedule.

Many PAWS teams visit with elders, several of whom are in various stages of dementia. Our Thinking Outside the Box program trains therapy companions to better understand dementia and Alzheimer's, recognize displaying behaviors, while also guiding teams on how to provide the best visit possible to someone following this path. In better understanding why folks are behaving in a particular manner, teams can provide a more personalized visit that supports the elder. Teams are also able to assist site staff in accomplishing some of the tasks/goals that may become difficult with a person suffering with dementia.

A Letter to Lily from New Friend, Nina
|
|
Susan Potts and her therapy companion, Lily, made it their mission to fund raise for this year's Wag-n-Walk. They did such a great job that they won the Top Individual Fundraiser award.
As part of their campaign, Lily wrote a letter to her Manor House friends. Here is a response Lily received.
"Hi, Lily,
"My name is Nina and I am the grandpup of your neighbors down the street, Jan and Bob Kennedy.
"I was a foster pup until my new mom, Erin, decided to keep me. Erin fosters for a group known as "Dogs XL" in the greater Baltimore area, although I am a little on the light side to be known as XL. Mom is known as a foster failure because she ended up keeping me.
"I understand you are looking for donations for PAWS for People. It sounds like a great idea; however, I have one problem in making a donation. I don't have an opposable
digit and thus find it hard to write checks, so I have asked Jan and Bob to write the check for me.
"Your new friend,
Nina"

Melanie Sieber & Trudy

January of 2013.
This Advanced team is Master's Certified and visits with Nemours Children's Hospital and the UD Lab Preschool. When not visiting with Trudy, Melanie is instrumental behind the scenes at PAWS events like the Wag-n-Walk and the Spring Fling. This team is amazing!

Philip Keats & Candace
Philip joined PAWS in November of 2015 with his Yellow Lab, Candace. Phil came to PAWS because he wanted to help people by having them interact with his loving and gentle, Candace. This Advanced team can be found bringing smiles to the faces of residents and staff at Brandywine Senior Living. They also have many wonderful visits at Beebe Hospital, Bookhammer Outpatient Services and the Tunnell Cancer Center. What a fantastic team!
