Quartet Corner
CONGRATULATIONS to our two wonderful quartet representatives to International last month! We are so very proud of both SPRITZER and POWER CHORDS for singing their hearts out. Just to walk across those footlights takes a lot of time, personal sacrifice,   money and the commitment to make it all happen. We appreciate all you do in sharing your love and harmony.

And then... Spritzer was called to perform in the finals on Friday!  It was an electric performance that included a nostalgic Auld Lang Syne, a fun parody about New Year's resolutions gone astray and Livin' it Up! When Susann was featured in Stay Humble and Kind, it hit me that perhaps that is what this quartet is about. They are classy, oh so musical and all the while stay humble and kind. That is another reason why we love them. Congrats on your FOURTH place medals. We are so very proud of you.

All of Region 16 is eager to see and hear both quartets at the Fall Music School!

When you watched the quartets in Vegas, was there a little part of you that yearned to do that when you grow up? There is a different starting point for every singer who ends up feeling the friendship and the joy of working on achievements together in a quartet. At this year's Fall Music School there is an opportunity for singers to get their feet wet in small ensemble singing ... For many it will be their first quartet-like independent experience. For others, it might be so much fun that they find the courage afterwards to form a quartet.  Let's all show our support for our VERY LARGE QUARTETS as they 'compete' on the Friday night of the Fall Music School at 7 PM!

Acapella North Chorus
Acapella North just finished their Fall Weekend Retreat at the Wadhams Hall Conference Center in Ogdensburg. It was a wonderful blend of music, friendship, and fun.

The highlight of the event was our work with Sweet Adeline Region 16 Faculty Member and Coach Sue Melvin from Rochester who shared her amazing understanding of singing barbershop style music. She guided and supported us as we rehearsed our competition songs... helping us to add refinement and flare in the right places.

We finished the day with a "comedy show" that spotlighted the many talents of our members. The venue, the food, and the friendship were enjoyed by all and helped us to rejuvenate and remind us why our chorus motto is: "Harmony Happens Here"!

We created a new mission statement this weekend and are happy to share it with the public:
WE ARE THE ACAPELLA NORTH CHORUS!
WE VALUE SINGING, LEARNING, AND PERFORMING TOGETHER IN HARMONY!

Whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?!   Not this time - North Metro is bringing it home!!! Congratulations to our new International Champions NORTH METRO CHORUS and 4th place quartet SPRIZTER!

Wow!! NORTH METRO, SPRIZTER, POWER CHORDS, CANADIAN SHOWTIME CHORUS and GREATER KINGSTON CHORUS, thank you for your fantastic performances at International.  We watched with awe as you represented Region 16 so well.  It was a thrill to see you perform.  You were inspiring and we are so proud to be a part of Region 16 and all its incredible talent.

Speaking of talent, let's not forget our very own hostess with the mostest and webcast diva, Diane Porsch.  As always, you were entertaining and informative and we enjoyed every moment.

Without a doubt, watching these impressive choruses makes us want to delve into contest mode...but we are hard at work on Christmas music for our upcoming friends and family show.   We also plan to share the holiday spirit with our community by visiting local nursing homes and making a trip to the mall to entertain the shoppers.  Yes, believe it or not, the holidays are coming up fast and so we want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, healthy holiday season!

Next stop...Music School!  We are looking forward to seeing all of our sisters in harmony, learning more about this barbershop art form that we love so much and....

...singing at the tag party, of course ;)  See you there!
Circle of Harmony

Circle of Harmony at IES

Ten members from the Circle of Harmony attended the extraordinary IES sessions in August. We all had a blast!   Here is Master Director, Barb Hodge, left, with 8 of us!

We kicked off our fall season with our New Member Night, on September 13, and 15 ladies have joined our Show Choir programme. We have had great success with this programme, where ladies are invited to come out to rehearsal, from September to December, learn a few songs, and sing on our shows in November, all for free. They are then invited to audition and become official members of the Circle of Harmony. It is a wonderful way to get to know about our art, so that when they make the decision to join, they have already learned songs, choreo, and performed in public. We hope that these 15 ladies will continue with the Circle of Harmony in the New Year!

Harmony North Chorus
Greetings to all of Region 16 from Collingwood.
It is with great sadness that we tell you about the deaths of 3 of our members this fall. All 3 had long battles with cancer, and died within 3 weeks of each other.
  • Nancy Cichon died on Sept. 11. She was a charter member of our chorus, and our long suffering competition coordinator. She had a career in finance. She lived most of her life in our local area, and leaves behind 2 sons and a daughter.
  • Janie Grice died on Sept. 28. She had only been a member of Harmony North for 1 year, but made a huge impact on all of us. She was an experienced singer, having sung professionally in various locations in the States, especially New Orleans. She was an avid lead and helped us out at all of our section rehearsals.
  • Barb Carter died on Oct. 1. She was a Sweet Adeline for over 40 years, and a wonderful bass. She has left a huge hole in our chorus and in our hearts. We could always depend on Barb for cracking a joke at just the right time, or giving a helping hand to someone in need.

We miss all 3 of these ladies, but know that they have found peace, and are probably singing somewhere together.

Harmony North worked very hard towards our performance at this year's competition in Syracuse. Many thanks to our director Catherine Robertson, for her many hours of vocal instruction, for doing PVI's, and always having such a positive attitude.  As a result, we were able to increase our score by 80 points and receive the Most Improved Chorus award. We were all so very proud.

On another note, we again held our annual Spring Fling Fashion Show this spring, and had another great success. We model, sing, bake decadent desserts, and have a lot of fun with this fundraiser every year. We also took part in the annual Arts and Music Festival in Collingwood in July, manning a promotions booth for our chorus and Sweet Adelines in general, and singing on the entertainment stage.

Our annual Christmas concert is planned for November 29 in Collingwood. We hope to have at least two new members singing with us for this event. We are busy learning 4 new songs for this concert, and are looking forward to the fun and excitement of the coming holiday season.

Many of us are planning on attending the fall music school in Toronto, so hope to see you there.
Yours in harmony: Marion Boyd, Harmony North Chorus.

Orangeville Show Chorus
NEWS FROM ORANGEVILLE SHOW CHORUS!
Congratulations on the Region 16 'Vegas Victories'! Whether you were there in person or glued to the web cast, we can all be so proud of North Metro for a Colossal Championship, Spritzer for a Phenomenal Placement, and Canadian Showtime and Power Chords for an Awesome Accomplishment!!! And with the winners overall from many different countries, it truly was a great "International Experience". Kudos to all who crossed that stage!!
Orangeville Show Chorus is taking the first step to personify our new name. We are having a Big Show! Here's the poster with all the details. Our fall season will be busy with preparations for the show and with coaching. So for now..."That's all folks"!  See you at Music School.

York Harmony Chorus

It's always exciting to introduce newbies...we have two ladies who have officially joined YHC in the past couple weeks. Carmen and Lori. Welcome to YHC family, we are so happy to have you.  Hear US, Love US, Join US was our membership drive theme this year.  We spread the news, we chatted it up, posted flyers, sent out messages to friends in preparation for our September 12th evening. Wow, the turnout was 25 ladies...LUCKY US!! Anne Gauvreau, our membership team leader was VERY pleased. Thank you to all those who helped make it such a great success. A special "Thank you" to Katrina T. for preparing and unveiling our beautiful new banners and signs.

To help ring in the fall, YHC members performed at the Farm to Fork / Culture Day at the Sharon Temple. The acoustics were extra special.  It's worth a visit to this historic site.

That following rehearsal, well, Joe Connelly...need we say more! YHC was blessed with his presence on October 3rd. With his high passion and motivating feedback, by the end of rehearsal it was hard not to feel totally invigorated and ready to shoot for the stars. A huge "Thank You" to Joe for sharing your face, space and place, your tips, your passion and your energetic   insights that got us "All Fired Up". We are sure to continue pursuing an optimum barbershop performance both with our sound, polished tags and of course choreo.

Big Shout OUT from YHC to our Region 16 "Sisters In Harmony," who performed at Internationals this past weekend.  North Metro Chorus & Greater Kingston Chorus CONGRATULATIONS !

On the evening of Friday, February 16th, 2018, North Metro Chorus will host its first A Cappella Challenge for Youth under 25. It will be open to coed. youth choral groups, not soloists or groups who are already fully members of Sweet Adelines. We are inviting you to save the date to join us. The A Cappella Challenge will take place at the Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts.

This initiative is part of our outreach to inspire youth in the craft of a cappella music and expose the local music education community to our chorus and our amazing organization. For those of you who watch The Sing Off, the Voice, America's Got Talent, or more local events such as Show Choir Canada, it is clear that our youth possess phenomenal talent. This is another avenue for them to share that talent and develop a relationship with our organization.
