BC QUALIFIES LARGEST SPEECH & DEBATE TEAM IN 25 YEARS & SCORES MULTIPLE AWARDS AT TOURNAMENT
Public speaking is a cornerstone of a BC education; all students practice and
refine their skills in courses and electives from PreK through 12th grade. 35 BC students (our largest team in 25 years) recently competed at a NYC Speech & Debate tournament in Queens and brought home multiple individual and team awards.

Among the many winners: Jake P. '20 won 1st place in Varsity Extemporaneous Speaking and has now qualified for the State Championships; Eden W. '21 and Ava S. '21 won 1st place in Novice Public Forum Debate; Luke E. '21 won 2nd place in Declamation and Jordan H. '20 won 5th in Dramatic Performance. Complete list of BC winners .

BC teams won 2nd place in Speech events; 2nd place in Speech, Congress, & Debate; and 3rd place team in Student Congress.
8 TH GRADERS STUDY CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS ON ECONOMY & ECOSYSTEMS ON 1-WEEK TRIP
8th graders spent last week on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland , where many effects of climate change in the U.S first manifest. They learned about environmental and community challenges in this diverse area by getting their hands dirty at an oyster farm, pitching in at a food pantry for migrant workers, peering into microscopes at plankton and other water creatures, and much more. 4 th GRADERS STUDY HUDSON RIVER ECOSYSTEM
4th grade scientists got an introduction to the Hudson River ecosystem, including oyster toadfish, spider crabs, sea bass, sea squirts, grass shrimp and cone jellies, during a trip to The River Project. This year they will be studying the role of invertebrates in the ecosystem, and working closely with these animals through the Billion Oyster Project.
ALUM PUBLISHES OP-ED IN TEEN VOGUE
Devin Halbal ’16 just published an op-ed in Teen Vogue with recommendations on how to help victims of violence, especially if you witness an incident. After being targeted and victimized in a hate crime, Devin (who is fortunately okay) decided to turn the experience into an opportunity to teach and help others.
UPPER SCHOOLERS BUILD A BARN FOR PreK STUDENTS
Upper School students surprised preschoolers in Ms. Connell's class by building a huge red barn in their classroom --right before their eyes! 4 TH GRADERS LEARN TO COOK EN ESPAÑOL
A cooking class taught in Spanish is just one of the many electives 4th graders can take this year. In this class, students have made treats such as brigadeiros (chocolate truffles) from Brazil and tostadas Mexicanas while learning new vocabulary and practicing conversation skills. Other 4th grade electives include woodworking, sewing, cursive, Mock Newbery, yoga and one act comedies.

5 TH GRADERS BUILD MULTIPLICATION MACHINES
This week in the Beta Lab, 5th graders assembled multiplication machines to kick off their study of multi-digit multiplication and long division. Students will use the machines to examine patterns, look at divisibility rules, and study prime and composite numbers. Photos
FIRST GRADERS MAKE A “KINDNESS CHAIN”
1st graders formed a kindness chain on the roof by linking arms and discussing examples of kind behavior they could perform in real life. Back in the classroom, they created a long paper chain to display in the Lower School, reminding everyone that small acts of kindness add up.
3 RD GRADERS EXAMINE HOW TO HELP NYC WATER SYSTEM AT GOWANUS CONSERVANCY
3rd grade scientists visited the Gowanus Conservancy as part of a unit on where we get our water and where it goes after we use it. They learned about our city's combined sewage overflow system, and how plants and gardens can help solve the problem. Then they became part of the solution by spending some time gardening.
7 TH GRADERS DEEPEN UNDERSTANDING OF U.S. HISTORY ON FIELD TRIP
7th grade humanities students visited historically significant sites from the novel 'Chains' in Lower Manhattan to deepen their understanding of enslavement and the American Revolution in NYC. The trip included a tour of City Hall Park with Manhattan Borough Historian Michael Miscione, a meaningful visit to the African Burial Ground National Monument, exploration of Trinity Church’s graveyard, and a final drawing activity at Battery Park.
FIRST GRADERS VISIT PROSPECT PARK FARMERS MARKET
1st graders took their first trip to Prospect Park (a longtime BC tradition). They stopped along the way to eat, play, observe how different community members use the park, and fill out leaf identification cards they made in science class. Students practiced their interview skills with Farmer Dan at the Farmers Market asking him questions about his job, and then everyone got to pick a pumpkin to take home. Photos
STUDENTS EXPLORE DOTS, NYC PANORAMAS, CLAY & WIRE IN ART CLASS
Lower School art students have been busy! 1st graders are exploring the artist Yayoi Kusama, dots, lines, and patterns; 2nd graders are working with color and creating panoramic illustrations of areas of interest in 5 NYC boroughs; 3rd graders are finding solutions to art challenges in paper and modeling clay; 4th graders used a variety of materials to render still lifes and are developing 3D problem-solving skills with clay, cardboard, and wire.
PreK LEARNS ABOUT DIWALI
Ms. Connell’s PreK class welcomed special guests and learned about the Hindu holiday Diwali. Parents read books and brought homemade sweets to celebrate with the class. Photos .

The World Affairs Breakfast Club recently discussed radical Islam in Indonesia. Visual arts teacher Tammy Nguyen hosted via video chat from Indonesia where she is traveling with the Carnegie Council. Read the recap on their blog
KINDERGARTEN VISITS BOTANIC GARDEN
Kindergarteners are exploring their five senses! On a trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, they participated in a sensory exploration workshop to observe a diverse collection of plants using four of their senses — hearing, smelling, touching and seeing. Photos .
BC FIGHTS BREAST CANCER
Following a "Think Pink” game for Breast Cancer Awareness against The Hewitt School, the varsity and JV volleyball teams also hosted a BC community game in which faculty and other students were invited to play and donate. Photos
