This Sunday
Spider Man, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Captain America, even Ironman all have things in common. They are super heroes who possess powers that seem, well, super-natural. Each seems to have a singular power that is then undergirded by others. They seem to be a part of a close knit group that seeks to work together to conquer the evils that seem to threaten humankind. Their primary goal is to save humanity from some evil force. They often wear things that make them easily identifiable, some kind of super hero outfit that fits their power. They each offer things that stretch the understanding of heroism, and seem to have a depth of moral integrity that often goes against the norms of their location. Many have gained their powers through some exterior circumstance whether it
's a tragic life event, some power that has entered them at some point, or even that they come from somewhere else. Well, suffice it to say that this Sunday we'll be exploring what makes a super hero super. What sets them apart? I'll ask the question, if you were a super hero, what would your chosen superpower be?
All of this is to prepare us for Vacation Bible School the following week. We have 130 children coming to Aldersgate, each of whom will be exploring this topic. So, I need to ask, was Jesus a super hero, particularly if you examine what sets super heroes apart from normal human beings? Let
's have some fun with this. At the same time, there are deeply spiritual elements involved. To prepare please read Luke 2:41-52 and Matthew 4:23-5:12.

Hero Central VBS Update
We are looking forward to an exciting and fun week at Vacation Bible School July 24-27. We will welcome 135 kids to Hero Central VBS and share God's great love with them all week. At Hero Central we will discover our strength in God and learn we can be heroes too. The
VBS Key Hero Verse is: "Do good! Seek peace and go after it!" (Psalm 34:14b). Each day we will hear a Bible Story and get our Hero Code and then explore these through music, crafts, science and games.

Sunday July 23
we will transform our church into our Hero Central Base for the week and would appreciate any and all help doing so! We will start after worship services and will work until it is done. Lunch will be provided.
On Monday, July 24 all VBS volunteers should arrive by 8:15am and arrive at
8:30am the rest of the week. Our young heroes should arrive at
8:45am on Monday to get checked in.
A big thank you to all those who have been working hard on VBS preparations and those who will be volunteering through the week. Please lift up VBS volunteers, participants and families in your prayers.

Kids' Club Volunteers Needed
Want an Excuse to Play?
Kids' Club is in need of volunteers! Come play, craft, or simply hang out with our Aldergate's kids during worship services this summer. Volunteers are needed during each service throughout the summer. You can simply volunteer for one service, both services on specific date, or multiple Sundays, so its flexible and can work with anyone's schedule. Help Move Furniture
On Sundays, August 6 and August 13, between services (about 10am), please help move furniture in/out of the preschool classrooms so we can clean the carpets and wax the floors. Please sign up! Questions? Contact Dave Carver or Dorothy Beeman.

Ushers Needed
The first service is in need of more ushers to add to the usher rotation. Basically an usher comes to church 15-20 minutes early, greets people, hands out the Sunday bulletin, lights the altar candles, does a headcount, collects the offering, assists visitors, and tidies up the sanctuary after the service. Youth and adults are welcome to serve as ushers. With enough volunteers, usher serve every 6-8 weeks. Kitchen Range Hood
Are you renovating your kitchen? The church has a very nice stainless steel residential kitchen range hood for sale for a donation. It is a 48-inch Broan Elite 61000 series, model #614804 and is practically brand-new. The church is upgrading to a commercial kitchen range hood to meet the requirements of the bigger ovens. Budget Approved
We are happy to report that the Core Leadership Team has approved a balanced budget for the next budget cycle, July 2017 - June 2018. Click here to view. A big thank you to the congregation for your faithful giving and pledge commitment. If you haven't turned in a pledge card, it's not too late! Please click here for the pledge form and return it to the church office.
Thank you to our staff, lay leaders and Finance Team for creating this budget. Their leadership and guidance in our faith community is greatly appreciated. We thank God for the abundance he has given us and we pray that we use those resources wisely. May we continue to live out our mission of "Faith, Love, Health and Service" in 2017/2018.

Where Is Connections Counseling?
With the arrival of Associate Pastor Laura Baumgartner coinciding with Laura Wall's move to La Conner, the counseling office at Aldersgate has closed. Connections Counseling, however, is still alive and functioning the same as ever. Laura Wall and Katie Stickney still see clients at Redmond UMC, although Laura will be phasing that out as she reaches into new areas including Mount Vernon, La Conner and Anacortes. Mary Stanton-Nurse is setting up shop at Ronald UMC, Peter Jabin, Jenn Peterson and Gretchen Champoux are still in Seattle, and the subsidy fund is still serving low-income clients. I

ALL Church and VBS Picnic

Join us for Aldersgate's All Church & VBS Picnic on Sunday, July 30th at 11:30am (
There is only one worship service at 10:00am!) Aldersgate will provide hot dogs, hamburgers with all the fix'ins, plus drinks, plates and utensils. Mariners Baseball Game
Tuesday, August 15 @ 7:10pm
Let's go to the ballgame and root on our Seattle Mariners against the Baltimore Orioles. We have View Section seats and the cost is $13.00 per person. (This is half price!) Please pay in full at the time of your request and include this linked order form plus a self-addressed stamped envelope so the tickets can be mailed to you or include instructions to put the tickets in your church mailbox. Tickets will arrive around July 28th. The last day for ordering tickets is July 26th. We have 100 tickets reserved for the Aldersgate Community including the Aldersgate Christian Preschool and VBS families. VBS Mission Project -
School Supply Drive
The mission project for Vacation Bible School is to collect school supplies and YOU CAN HELP! Aldersgate is partnering with Congregations for Kids to provide school supplies for low-income families in the Bellevue School District. The need is great. In 2016, 18.8% of district students, 3760, qualified for the free or reduced price lunch program. Fortunately, Congregations for Kids was able help 1466 students receive backpacks and school supplies valued at $51,166 donated by 30 participating organizations including Aldersgate. Please donate the supplies listed or bring a monetary donation (write "VBS Missions" in the memo field of your check). The last day to contribute is Sunday, August 6.

Colleen Olleman wants to share this recent newsletter from Katherine Parker, Board of Global Missions Missionary to Nepal and supported by Aldersgate.
Most of my work at the United Mission to Nepal falls under the broad category of program management. This spring I have been involved in the evaluation of several of our community-focused projects in health and transformational learning. While this has largely been a positive and exciting process of learning from our best practices, it is always the challenging stories that stay with me. In the rest of this newsletter, I will try to explain the context of some of the experiences that have affected me deeply over these last few months.

Transitioning to a Clean Energy Economy

Seattle First Baptist Church (1111 Harvard Ave, Seattle) is hosting the event Transitioning to a Clean Energy Economy on Sunday July 23 at 7:00pm.
In Washington, social justice, labor, faith, environmental, and health advocates have used our collective experiences and values and built on existing policies to create what we believe is the most effective and equitable carbon reduction policy to date for transitioning to a clean energy economy.
Learn more about the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy's campaign for a carbon tax that would fund investments in a clean-energy economy.
