Watermelon Social: Sunday, July 23, 11:30 a.m.  Lunch will be hot dogs with all the fixings (including sauerkraut and onions), plus watermelon salads, watermelon cold soups, cookies and desserts. Cold lemonade and pure water will be available. Some limited seating inside. The rest outside under the tents. Kids games and races will start at about noon out on the back lawn. Joys & Concerns

Memorial Service for The Rev. Dr. Bill Murry: If anyone is interested in carpooling, please contact Bill Butler ( wb6566@gmail.com). Rev. Murry, former President of Meadville Lombard Theological School (the UU-identity seminary in Chicago) and Minister of the River Road UU for 17 years, died July 6. He was the author of 3 books, including "Reason & Reverence: Religious Humanism for the 21st Century. "A Celebration of his Life" will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 5 at River Road in Bethesda. 

Fanny Johnsson fell not long ago and broke bones in her shoulder, leg, and hand. She welcomes calls (301-644-5724), visits and cards. During her recovery, she is in Meadows #207, which is part of the continuous care facility of Homewood at Crumland Farms. Cards can be sent to:

Beginning Pagan Practices:  Select Tuesdays, beginning March 28, (10 sessions) 6:30 p.m. (Chapel). Learn the basics of Pagan spiritual practices with Frederick CUUPS ("Covenant of UU Pagans") Co-Chair Irene Glasse. Build a strong philosophical foundation, develop your spiritual connection, learn common beliefs and practices and deepen your journey into Pagan faith. This is a beginner's course and everyone is welcome. The course can be taken as a whole with homework, feedback and personalized guidance or as drop-in sessions. Lammas Ritual, Friday, July 28, 7:45 p.m. (Sanctuary) Lammas or Lughnassadh is the time of year when plants first start to drop their fruits or seeds. The bounty and fullness of Summer are in full swing, and we begin to harvest what we have sown. Around the world, cultures are celebrating the abundance around us. This family-friendly ritual will honor some of the Gods and Goddesses of the Harvest and provide an opportunity to make offerings and petitions within Sacred Space. Irene is leading this year's Lammas ritual. Snack/dessert potluck to follow, please clearly LABEL any offerings with the ingredients included.

"Ask Me Anything" with Rev. Amanda Poppei , Sunday, July 30, 11:45 a.m. (Sanctuary). The Rev. Amanda Poppei, of The Washington Ethical Society will answer our questions, lead a discussion for us after our Sunday Service. Amanda has a Masters of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC and a BA in Religious Studies from Yale University.  She is a Unitarian Universalist minister as well as a serving as Vice-President of the Unitarian Universalist Humanist Association, and is a co-founder of the Humanist Clergy Collaboratory.

Film Screening & Discussion: Now is The Time: Sunday, July 30, 2:00 p.m. Thurmont Library. Interested in how we can bring about affordable universal healthcare through Medicare for ALL? This event is organized by local activists with the Frederick County chapter of Healthcare Is a Human Right -- MARYLAND, supported by Physicians for a National Health Program.

The Social Action Committee encourages you to take a look at its newly organized cabinet in the Atrium.  Challenged by member Bill Butler, the Committee spent time at the end of its meeting this week to review all postings, take down outdated information, and promote the  current month's split-plate recipient.  To post something in the SAC cabinet contact Bill (at

Volunteers Needed: Annual Frederick City Feeder School Supply, Monday, August 14, between 7:00 a.m and 8:00 p.m. Help children and youth in our community get off to a great start as they begin a new school year by donating school supplies, funds for the purchase of supplies, and volunteering at the annual Frederick City School Supply distribution day. Hope you can help. We need volunteers from 7am to 8pm registering families, organizing the supplies, supervising in the movie area, reading books, distributing supplies, and clean-up. Donate school supplies through the United Way's "Stuff the Bus" program at various locations around the county.  You can also make a financial donation through the Religious Coalition. The funds given through the Coalition are then spent on school supplies by me and other members of the "buying" team.
