The following is a Q&A session with Fred Arment, Executive Director of International Cities of Peace.
- To network, encourage, document, and provide resources and information for leaders and organizations working to make peace a consensus value through the global Cities of Peace movement.
When and why was the organization founded?
- Cities of Peace, Inc. was founded in 2009 with the first advisor being Peter vanden Dungen, the foremost scholar on cities of peace through history. The fundamental reason was to provide a sustainable platform for citizens to bring every person in the community into the process of working toward a culture of peace.
How would you describe International Cities of Peace today?
- There are now 165 cities of peace in 46 countries on six continents. Each of the cities of peace have developed goals and objectives that are unique to the needs of their community. The empowerment is not in the central organization but in the individual cities of peace and community leaders. The results are exciting: citizens are building schools and health care facilities; taking care of orphans and women victims of war; working on environmental and hunger issues; holding dialogues and workshops; fostering understanding of differing faiths and customs.
Of what are you most proud?
- That we simply inspire people to work for peace. We provide a platform for leaders of small and large communities to work in their individual ways to create a culture of peace. International Cities of Peace is the only organization that puts the emphasis on "in situ" leadership, a new generation of peace builders, that knows the needs and solutions for their communities.
What would you want people to know about International Cities of Peace?
- "IN SITU" LEADERS ARE BEST SUITED TO CREATE SAFETY, PROSPERITY, AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITY AND ONE ORGANIZATION IS SUCCEEDING IN DELIVERING THAT NEXT-CENTURY PROPOSITION.
- Goal: To create 1000 cities of peace by year 2025 with in-situ leadership that knows the needs of their community and solves problems through the use of best practices designed and implemented by citizens who live and work in the community. To create a world that works for everyone; where every community works for the benefit of every citizen. Where people will find and discover the solutions, relationships and culture that will make for a safe, prosperous and higher quality life.
- Strategies: International Cities of Peace is an in situ approach where people will transform their relationship with each other in their own city. Each city has its own citizen teams from every sector of society to address what the unique needs are for their city. This model has hundreds of proven case studies where immediate results have led to an ongoing culture of cooperation, understanding and goodwill.
- Differentiation: A scalar model enabling organic, sustainable growth, International Cities of Peace Is a path toward local impact and global community. Teams of citizens develop programs to resolve conflicts and end the fundamental causes of violence as well as build personal character based on empathy, civility, courage, trust and accountability. The result is a culture for conflict transformation and people embrace problem-solving for outcomes that are beneficial to all concerned.
What International Cities of Peace IDP activities are upcoming?
- Each of our cities of peace have continuing events in education, health care, environmental issues, creating businesses, working with victims of war, helping orphans, building schools, the work is extensive.
Also, each of our nearly 200 cities of peace designates a meal, however humble or extensive, to peace. Anyone can join the GLOBAL FEAST FOR PEACE, an annual event for International Day of Peace on September 21st or any time during September.
Sharing food together in celebration of friendship and common interest is a tradition as old as the human family. The Global Feast for Peace is part of the U.N. sponsored International Day of Peace, celebrated around the world on September 21st each year. Whether it's a small family celebration or a large community gathering, the Feast for Peace is a simple and profound expression of peace that everyone, no matter how humble or blessed their circumstances, can connect with and enliven the global celebration.
How many cities in the US?
- There are now 20 cities in the United States, the latest being Ashland, Oregon, which Proclaimed as an official City of Peace in May, 2017. The Ashland Culture of Peace Commission is a stellar and inspiring peace innovation from a city of peace that is connecting the energy of the grassroots with the work of their civic leaders.
How would you describe International Cities of Peace's role and connection to Pathways To Peace?
- International Cities of Peace provides a powerful platform for on-the-ground implementation of the vision of Pathways to Peace: To make Peace a practical and sustainable reality in the 21st century. Avon Mattison is on our Advisory Council.
Is there anything else you'd like to say or think would be important to include?
* No city is 100% a city of peace. We all endeavor to "become". International Cities of Peace gives individuals and group, as well as civil governments a chance to focus on creating a community-wide culture of peace. This association of cities of peace provides an easy, practical, collaborative environment for building the worldwide peace community while respecting the individuality of communities.
* On April 27, 2017, Cities of Peace, Inc., was granted the privileges and benefits of Special Consultative Status with the U.N.'s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

About Pathways To Peace and the Culture of Peace Initiative
Incorporated in 1983
, Pathways to Peace (PTP) is an international organization dedicated to making Peace a practical reality in our world today. PTP is an official Peace Messenger of the United Nations and has Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. PTP works locally and globally, inter-generationally and multi-culturally, to promote Peacebuilding, Peace education, and to collaborate with other organizations in initiatives that help further the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI).
With participants from around the world, the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) is a cooperative local-global Peacebuilding Initiative uniting the strengths of organizations, networks, projects and people to realize a Culture of Peace for the Common Good. The CPI also serves as a vehicle for bringing to light many previously unseen and unheard Peacebuilders working along diverse paths, who are embodying the emerging Culture of Peace within Humanity. The annual highlight of the Culture of Peace Initiative is the International Day of Peace, which provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and nations to work together, on a shared date, to create practical acts of Peace with a year- round impact.
About the International Day of Peace
An annual focus for PTP is the International Day of Peace (Peace Day), held annually on September 21st.
Pathways To Peace has worked with the UN to observe and promote the International Day of Peace since its inception in 1981 and has grown International Day of Peace from a single event of a few hundred people into an annual global observance that now reaches hundreds of millions of people.
The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.
