Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child has been a tradition at Immaculate Conception Church since 1998. This year our parishioners have returned 358 boxes to be distributed to children all over the world. Your generosity has shown many needy children that they are thought of over the holiday season. Thank you for participating in this wonderful cause

Immaculata Catholic School continues to have a great 2016-17 school year. We are all very grateful for the support we feel as a school from all your prayers, volunteer hours and financial donations.
Our volunteer program is one that continues to grow and flourish and help our students and teachers. In addition to our fantastic library program, helping in the classrooms and lending a helping hand with office work, we have started a "Homework Forum" on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3-4 p.m. If you would enjoy helping with this, please call the office!
Our Girls' Volleyball and Boys' Soccer teams wrapped up tremendously successful seasons each. Both Girl's and Boys' Basketball season is upon us as well. Make plans to come on out to support the Stars!
Please remember to get your Ingles or Fresh Market grocery cards at no extra cost to you! You can get them after Mass or stop by the school office any day. We would love to give you a tour of Immaculata and introduce you to our school family!

The Open Arms Baby Shower given by the Women's Guild and the Youth of the parish was a great success. Close to 1000 items and some monetary gifts were donated.
The Open Arms Crisis Pregnancy Center is a pro-life organization whose mission is to save babies. They give counsel and support to mothers and babies up to 18 months of age.
Thank you for your generous support in helping this most important organization.

Save the Date......... Our parish is to be given a special gift the week before Christmas! An exhibit of Love and Mercy featuring the life of St. Teresa of Calcutta will be on display in the church for us to visit. The exhibit will also include up to 3 first class relics of St. Teresa for veneration. This is an opportunity for members of our parish to explore St. Teresa's life, pray for her intercession and, hopefully, grow in love. More details to follow.

Impressions of Italy......A Pilgrimage
|
|
Daybreak of day one provided a stunning view of the Alps jutting through the clouds, all illuminated by the morning sun. Thank you for your creation, Lord.
A group comes together for the first time at the airport in Rome, fussing with luggage, meeting our lovely guide; such excitement for what's to come and come it does! Directly to St Paul basilica, on to Saint Mary Major...a tired, but smiling group of pilgrims gazing in awe at masterpieces of art and architecture that were crafted to teach and to lift the mind and soul toward the majesty of God. Thank you, Lord, for your holy inspiration.
Another day in Rome soaked us with rain; however, spirits remained high as we splashed past iconic sights. Fathers Martin and Remo celebrated mass at the chapel, and at many churches throughout our travels. Thank you, Lord, for our pilgrim Priests.
The day that we saw Pope Francis was completely filled with joy! I am so spiritually uplifted to be joined by faith with so many others in this place. The Vatican museums, St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel......one needs to continually look up to the ceilings, discovering brilliant paintings and ornate decoration. Thank you, Lord, for giving me sight.
Assisi......beautiful town, physically and spiritually. Saint Francis is here in spirit. I know it and I struggle at leaving this place.
Too many special places to mention now, but my family and our new pilgrim friends come home with much in our hearts to ponder and share with others the proof that God loves and cares for us.

Traveling to Italy was about so many things. The natural scenery-awesome.
The quaint alleyways-curious and beckoning. The Mountain Guard and Carabinieri-so, so handsome! However, the biggest takeaway was how I felt inside the  churches, shrines and Basilicas. Each holy space maintained its quiet dignity with a sense of personal welcoming and peace. Each space felt personal, intimate and approachable. Expansive but not overpowering. Each statue or painting, floor or fountain embellishment, had a story to tell. Each threshold I crossed, I felt like my name was added to the historical roster of pilgrims. I wish I could have stayed longer in one place. Just being there was a gift from God.

Since childhood, I was told that my mission in life was to be successful. As a first generation American I had to set an example, by getting good grades, earning a degree to get a good career, make good money, and become financially stable so that I could live a long and happy life; because if I didn't I would risk becoming a failure.
I was reminded of this philosophy when I was sitting before the tomb of St. Francis of  Assisi. I watched as pilgrims and curious travelers waited in line to approach his tomb. People would leave candles, letters, even pictures of family members as they prayed for his intercession. He has been dead for 800 years, yet his presence is still felt throughout the world. He held no title, no money or possessions. His mission in life was to live the gospel.
I may not be called to give up all my possessions (at least not yet) or be the founder of some new group. When I die, other than some relatives and a few close friends, I expect any memory of me to be forgotten with the passage of time. But if I am able to remind someone of God's love, even if it is through a simple hug or smile, how could I possibly see my life, or any aspect of it, as a failure.

MEET IMMACULATA'S NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT!
|
Communication with staff, students, parents, and prospective families; answer phones; monitor visitors; give school tours; coordinate the school volunteers; and take care of bumps, scrapes, bruises, and upset tummies are but a few of the duties for which Julie Wojcik, the new Administrative Assistant at Immaculata School, is responsible.
Julie and her family, husband Paul, and daughter, Brooklynn Porter, have been parishioners at St. Barnabas Parish in Arden since coming to the area in 2006. "I have a close connection to Immaculata School," Julie explains, "as our daughter attended first through 8th grade there. She is now a high school senior who plans to go to college and eventually join the FBI."
Before coming to work at Immaculata, Julie assisted her photographer husband at Paul Vincent Photography. She's been a substitute teacher at Immaculata for many years, "What I love most about my position at Immaculata is the interaction with the children and staff," she explains.
In her spare time, Julie likes to paint "especially clouds," she smiles. "I find such beauty and wonder in them." She also enjoys cooking and has a "fun time" with her husband coming up with new and interesting dishes!
Julie says, "The hardest thing to do in my job is probably trying to keep up with all that needs to be done! I love the challenge of it though!"

2nd Grade Faith Formation Class

Kathy Meersman's 2nd grade class invited their parents and the other second grade Faith Formation parents to an All Saints Day celebration on Sunday, October 30th. They told stories of their Saints, did a true/false quiz with parents, played a "Who AM I" game and then came up with a list of faith filled -ing words to win a big bowl of candy! A great time was had by all.

BUSINESS GIVES TO GOOD SAMARITAN PROJECT

The season of Christmas inspires many of us to give generously to programs for the needy, but one local business makes giving a year round practice.
Toby's Mattress, located at 1404-A, Spartanburg Hwy, Hendersonville, has been donating used mattresses to the Good Samaritan Project at Immaculate Conception for 13 years.
"We only donate mattresses that are good quality and in pristine condition," says store manager, Keaton Jones, daughter of Toby Jones, the owner and founder of the business 22 years ago. "We make sure there are no stains, no tears, no holes, etc. on them before we give them to Immaculate Conception," she explains.
Toby's began donating the mattresses when parishioners Jim and JoAnn Kelly came into the store one day, and asked what they did with the used mattresses they picked up when delivering new mattresses. "When we told them we usually take them to the dump," Keaton remembers, "they asked if we would consider donating them if a storage unit could be provided for them. We were happy to say 'Yes'! Besides mattresses, Toby's also donates older sleeper sofas and beds.
Toby's asks their customers for permission to donate their old mattress, and "most people are delighted to help the needy." Keaton says. If those donating a mattress want to claim the donation on their income taxes, they need to contact Immaculate Conception.

We are Ross and Mary Shingledecker. We have been married for 46 years have 6 children and 17 grandchildren. We have lived in North Carolina for the past 19 years and most recently moved to Hendersonville from Greensboro via Huntersville. After visiting Hendersonville and attending Sunday Mass on our wedding anniversary this February, we decided to look for a home and make IC and Hendersonville our home. Not knowing anyone here, we consulted the Sunday Bulletin and found Pat and Bill Cleary who provided counsel, patience and friendship while finding us the place we hope will be our home for a long time. God has blessed us over the years, and we are looking forward to experiencing the Franciscan Spirituality and seeing how we might serve the community.

Dick and I are retired and live in
the Riverwind community. I am a native of North Carolina and Dick is originally from Elizabethtown, PA. We had both been widowed, and in 2010 we were married. Dick was aware that I had been raised Catholic, and he gave me a trip to Rome as a wonderful gift.
Earlier, I had left the church and became an Episcopalian. After our marriage, we talked of our religious leanings and Dick suggested that I go back to the Church. He said he was thinking of becoming a Catholic also. I was surprised, though I knew that he had long had an interest in the Church. I felt that the Lord was using Dick to call me back.
And here we are. Dick is in RCIA with a great group, and November 20th was his big day. I am happy for him, and glad to be home again.

Becoming Catholic is more than just showing up at the Church office and filling out some paperwork. The Church in her wisdom has established a process in which those seeking communion with her would go through a period of formation and conversion known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). More than just a series of classes that teach you "Catholic stuff", RCIA helps those seeking to enter Christ's Church to understand the Church's purpose in God's plan of salvation. It focuses on connecting the story of salvation to the inquirer's own life story, enabling them to see their place in a bigger whole-the body of Christ. The culmination of the RCIA process is the reception of the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist.
On November 20th three men were received into full communion with the Catholic Church at the 9:00 AM Mass. Richard Bainbridge, Colton Allard, and John Knight all come from various Christian backgrounds, and since already having been baptized and completed the period of formation, they have received the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist and made a profession of faith. The Universal Church and Immaculate Conception Parish welcome them.

Operación "Christmas Child" ha sido una tradición en la Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción desde 1998. Nuestra Escuela Católica Immaculata continúa teniendo un gran año escolar 2016-17. Todos estamos muy agradecidos por el apoyo que sentimos que recibe nuestra escuela producto de todas sus oraciones, horas de voluntariado y donaciones económicas.
Nuestro programa de voluntariado es uno que continúa creciendo y floreciendo ayudando a nuestros estudiantes y maestros. En adición a nuestro fantástico programa en la biblioteca, la ayuda en los salones y una mano amiga en las labores de oficina, hemos iniciado un "Foro de Tareas" los Lunes y Miércoles por la tarde de 3-4pm. El baby Shower que ofreció el Gremio de Mujeres y el Grupo de Jóvenes de la parroquia al grupo Open Arms fue todo un éxito. Cerca de 1000 artículos y algunos obsequios monetarios fueron donados.
El Centro de apoyo a madres gestantes: Open Arms es una organización a favor de la vida cuya misión es salvar bebés. Ellos dan apoyo y consejo legal a madres y bebés de hasta 18 meses de edad.

La exposición incluirá también, para nuestra veneración, hasta 3 reliquias de primera clase de Santa Teresa. Esta es una oportunidad para que los miembros de nuestra parroquia exploren la vida de Santa Teresa, recen por su intercesión y, con suerte, crezcan en amor. Vienen más detalles.

Impresiones de Italia... La peregrinación

El alba del primer día nos d a un a maravillosa vista de los Alpes sobresaliendo a través de las nubes, todo está iluminado por los rayos de sol. Te doy gracias, Señor, por tu creación.
Un grupo se une por primera vez en el aeropuerto en Roma, luchando con el equipaje, conociendo a nuestra guía; tanta emoción por lo que ha de venir y no nos defraudo.
Vamos directo a la Basílica de San Pablo, luego a Santa María la Mayor... Unos peregrinos cansados pero alegres miran con asombro a las obras de arte y de la arquitectura que fueron diseñados para ensenar y elevar la mente y el alma hacia la majestad de Dios. Te doy gracias, Señor, por tu inspiración
Otro día en Roma y nos cae un diluvio, sin embargo, no dejamos que empapa nu
estro espíritu. Nuestros sacerdotes, Martin y Remo, celebran la misa en diferentes capillas durante nuestro viaje. Te doy gracias, Señor, por nuestros sacerdotes.
El día que vimos al Papa Francisco, fue un día lleno de alegría. De ver la multitud de fieles reunidos en este lugar alegra mi espíritu. El museo Vaticano, la Basílica de San Pedro, la capilla Sixtina...uno tiene que tener la mirada fija hacia arriba y descubrir las hermosas pinturas y decoraciones del techo. Te doy gracias, Señor, por darme la vista.
Asís...un pueblo hermoso, en un sentido físico y espiritual, se siente el espíritu de San Francisco. Lo sé y me cuesta dejar este lugar.
Ay demasiados lugares de mencionar, pero mi familia y nuevos amigas regresamos a nuestro hogares con mucho en que pensar y compartir con otros las pruebas de que Dios nos ama.

El viaje a Italia se trataba de tantas cosas. El paisaje- hermoso.
El viaje a Ítala se trataba de tantas
cosas. La Guardia Suiza y Carabinieri-que guapos. Pero lo que me lleve fue lo que sentí cuando entre en las iglesias, santuarios y basílicas. Cada espacio sagrado mantuvo su dignidad con un sentido de paz y bienvenida. Cada espacio tuvo un sentido personal, íntimo y accesible; fue enorme, pero no abrumador. Cada estatua o pintura, piso o adorno de fuente tenía una historia que contar. En cada umbral que cruce, sentía como mi nombre era añadida a la lista de peregrinos. Me hubiera gustado quedarme más tiempo en lugares que conocí. El estar ahí, para mí fue un regalo de Dios.

Desde mi niñez, me impulsaron a ser una persona con éxito en la vida. Siendo parte de la primera generación nacida en este país, tenía que poner el ejemple. Tenía que mantener buenas calificaciones, obtener un título y buscar un trabajo. Tener un buen estado financiero para poder tener una vida más cómoda, porque si no, corría el riesgo de ser un fracaso.
Me acorde de esta filosofía
cuando estaba sentada en frente de la tumba de San Francisco de Asís. Bi como peregrinos y viajeros curiosos esperaban su turno para acercarse a su tumba. Las personas prendían vela, dejaban cartas y hasta fotos de sus parientes mientras oraban por su intercesión. Él ha estado muerto por 800 años, aun así, su presencia se siento por el mundo entero. El no tuvo un título, no tenía dinero o posesiones. Si misión en la vida ere de vivir el Evangelio.
Tal vez no me llama a renunciar mis posesiones (al menos todavía no) o ser fundadora de un grupo. Cuando muera, con la excepción de algunos parientes y amigos, espero que cualquier memoria mía será olvidada con el tiempo. Pero si soy capaz de recordarle a alguien del amor de Dios, aunque sea a través de un simple abrazo o una sonrisa, cómo podría ver mi vida, o algún aspecto de ella, como un fracaso.

¡CONOCE A LA NUEVA ASISTENTE ADMINISTRATIVA DE LA ESCUELA!

Comunicación con el perso  nal, estudiantes, padres y futuras familias; contestar el teléfono; monitorear visitantes; dar recorridos por la escuela; coordinar a los voluntarios; y atender golpes, rasguños, moretones y malestares estomacales son algunas de las tareas de las cuales es responsable Julie Wojcik, la nueva Asistente Administrativa en la escuela Immaculata.
Julie y su familia, su esposo Paul y su hija Brooklynn Porter, han sido feligreses de la parroquia de San Barnabas en Arden desde que llegaron a esta área en el 2006. "Tengo una relación estrecha con la escuela Immaculata," explica Julie, "porque nuestra hija cursó primer a octavo grado aquí. Ella ahora es una senior en la preparatoria que planea ir a la universidad para eventualmente unirse al FBI."
Antes de venir a trabajar a la Immaculata, Julie apoyaba a su esposo en su negocio de fotografía: Paul Vincent Photography. Ella había sido maestra sustituta en la Immaculata ya por muchos años, "Lo que más me gusta de mi puesto ahora en la Immaculata es la interacción con los niños y el personal," explica.
En su tiempo libro, Julie gusta de pintar "especialmente nubes," sonríe. "Encuentro tanta belleza y maravilla en ellas." También gusta de cocinar y "divertirse" con su esposo ¡inventando platillos nuevos e interesantes!
Julie dice, "La parte más difícil de mi trabajo probablemente es ¡mantenerme al día con todo lo que hay que hacer! ¡Me encanta el reto que esto implica!"

Colchones Toby's (Toby's Mattress), ubicado en el 1404-A de Spartanburg Hwy en Hendersonville, por 13 años ha estado donando colchones usados al Proyecto del Buen Samaritano de la Inmaculada Concepción.
"Sólo donamos colchones en buena calidad y que estén en óptimas condiciones," dice la gerente de tienda, Keaton Jones, hija de Toby Jones, dueño, quien fundó el negocio hace 22 años. "Nos aseguramos de que no tengan manchas, no estén rotos, no tengan agujeros, etc. antes de entregarlos a la Inmaculada Concepción," ella explica.
Toby comenzó a donar colchones cuando los feligreses Jim y JoAnn Kelly llegaron a la tienda un día, y preguntaron qué hacían con los colchones usados que retiraban de sus clientes al entregar los nuevos. "Cuando les dijimos que normalmente los llevábamos al basurero," Keaton recuerda, "ellos nos preguntaron si consideraríamos donarlos a la unidad de almacenaje que nos indicaran. Nos sentimos felices en decir que ¡Sí! Aparte de colchones, Toby también dona sofa camas y camas viejas.
Toby pide permiso a sus clientes para donar sus colchones usados, y "para la mayoría de la gente es un placer ayudar a los necesitados," dice Keaton. Si aquellos que han donado su colchón quieren un recibo para deducción de impuestos, necesitan contactar a la Inmaculada Concepción.
Bienvenidos Nuevos Miembros
Nosotros somos Ross y Mary Shingledecker. Hemos estado casados por 46 años, tenemos 6 hijos y 17 nietos. Hemos residido en Carolina del Norte los últimos 19 años y recientemente nos trasladamos a Hendersonville desde Greensboro por la vía de Huntersville. Después de visitar Hendersonville y asistir a la misa dominical por nuestro aniversario de bodas en Febrero pasado, decidimos buscar una casa y hacer de la IC y Hendersonville nuestra casa. Sin conocer a nadie aquí, consultamos el boletín dominical y encontramos a Pat y Bill Cleary quienes nos ofrecieron su consejo, amistad y paciencia mientras encontrábamos la que esperamos sea nuestra casa por mucho tiempo. Dios nos ha bendecido a través de los años, y ahora esperamos experimentar la espiritualidad Franciscana y ver de que manera podemos servir a la comunidad.

Dick y yo somos retirados y vivimos en la comunidad de Riverwind. Yo soy oriunda de Carolina del Norte y Dick es originario de Elizabethtown, PA. Los dos habíamos sido viudos, y nos casamos en el 2010. Dick sabía que yo había sido criada católica, y como regalo me dió un maravilloso viaje a Roma.
Antes, había dejado la iglesia y me había unido a los episcopales. Después de nuestro matrimonio, hablamos acerca de nuestras inclinaciones religiosas y Dick sugirió que regresara a la iglesia. Dijo que estaba considerando convertirse a la Fe Católica también. Yo estaba sorprendida, aunque sabía que él había estado interesado en la iglesia desde hacía mucho tiempo. Sentí que el Señor me llamaba de regreso a través de Dick.
Y aquí estamos. Dick cursa RCIA con un gran grupo, y el 20 de Noviembre es su gran día. Me siento feliz por él, y por estar de regreso en casa.

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RCIA)

Convertirse en Cristiano implica mucho más que llegar a la oficina de la iglesia y llenar unos papeles. La iglesia en su sabiduría ha establecido un proceso mediante el cual aquellos que buscan su comunión pasan por un periodo de formación y conversión conocido como el Rito de Iniciación para Adultos (RCIA). Mucho más que sólo una serie de clases que enseñan "cosas Católicas", RCIA ayuda a aquellos que buscan entrar a la Iglesia de Cristo a entender el propósito de la Iglesia en el plan de Salvación de Dios. Se enfoca en conectar la historia de la salvación a la vida personal del aspirante, permitiéndole ver su lugar en el gran contexto del cuerpo de Cristo. El proceso de RCIA culmina recibiendo los sacramentos de Iniciación: el Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Sagrada Eucaristía.
El 20 de Noviembre, durante la misa de 9:00AM, tres hombres fueron recibidos en completa comunión con la Iglesia Católica. Richard Bainbridge, Colton Allard y John Knight todos de diversa formación Cristiana anterior, y habiendo ya sido bautizados y completado el periodo de formación, recibirán los sacramentos de Confirmación y la Sagrada Eucaristía. La Iglesia Universal y la Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción les da la bienvenida.
