Behind the factory walls of 1645 Oak Street in the Lakewood Industrial Park, dozens of workers busy themselves each day assembling thousands of parts into a colorful product designed with one goal in mind - fun!  Operating since early 2011, the 42,000-square-foot factory is one of only two in the world that manufactures pinball machines.
 
Jack Guarnieri, founder, president and chief executive officer of Jersey Jack Pinball, said the startup company is drawing new followers to a game that traces its roots to the 1930s, which pairs skill and luck to ultimately put smiles on people's faces.
 
With thousands of customers around the world looking to buy pinball machines that sell for about $8,000 to $9,500 apiece, Guarnieri is guessing that Jersey Jack Pinball has grown into a multi-million-dollar company.

Guarnieri, a Jackson resident, is no stranger to the business of fun. He started out in the amusement game industry in New York in 1975 as a pinball machine repairman. He operated Fuzzy's Family Fun Factory in Howell, a popular amusement center for children's parties, from 1996 to 1999.  Then, he started an online sales site PinballSales.com, based in Lakewood in 1999 and worked there for 15 years.
 
With only one pinball machine manufacturer left in the world, Stern Pinball, Inc. in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, Guarnieri saw a void and he took a chance. He leased the 42,000-square-foot factory in the Lakewood Industrial Park in the midst of the economic recession, and he designed an epic pinball machine based on a perennial classic, "The Wizard of Oz.'' The Lakewood Industrial Commission (LIC) was established in 1960 under the enabling statute: N.J.S.A.  40:55B-1, et seq.  

Its volunteer commissioners are charged with fostering local and regional economic growth, increasing employment opportunities, and promoting the economic well-being of businesses in Lakewood Township.

 

The Lakewood Industrial Park is the second largest industrial park system in New Jersey, covering 2000+ acres. More than 400 businesses, which have created and support about 11,000 jobs, are located within Lakewood's M-1 (Industrial) and PS (Industrial Park Professional Service) Zones.

MILSPRAY - Finding Solutions in Lakewood

Founded in a garage 15 years ago by Todd Bullivant who used baby food jars while experimenting with ways to apply small containers of touch-paint to military vehicles, Milspray Military Technologies™ ( www.milspray.com) today is a thriving business with an international reach and a growing client base. 

The privately held company currently employs about 60 people deployed in such far-flung places as Guam as well as Camp Pendleton in San Diego and the Fort Irwin U.S. Army National Training Center in the Mojave Desert , both in California , and Camp LeJeune, N.C .
 
Ten years ago Milspray™ moved to Lakewood from Asbury Park and now occupies a 20,000  square-foot building, its headquarters, on Towbin Avenue in Lakewood's Industrial Park. Here, it develops and delivers products, systems, and services for the Department of Defense (DOD), government agencies, law enforcement and commercial businesses domestically and internationally to include corrosion prevention services for vehicles and equipment, renewable energy systems, portable vehicle wash systems, touch-up paints, and specialty coatings.

A prime example of the commercial building explosion taking place in Lakewood was the recent dedication and tour of the Lakewood Professional Center, 15 America Avenue, Lakewood. For Mark Chopp, the developer and president of Lakewood Equity Group, this project, the second of four building projects planned by Lakewood Equity, is just the beginning.

T-Hangars at Lakewood Airport
  
T he Lakewood Industrial Commission (LIC) has entered into a long-term agreement with the Township of Lakewood that will enable the Commission to construct 30 hangars - in three buildings with 10 T-hangars each. 

Airplane owners will be able to rent the hangar space from the LIC to house their planes and to work on them in a protected environment. Deposits for almost all available hangar space have already been received.

Robert Kirschner, chairman of the LIC, said, "Lakewood Airport has seen steady growth paralleling that of the surrounding Lakewood Industrial Parks.

"Local airplane owners, patrons of the Lakewood Airport, have expressed avid interest in the past about leasing hangar space at this airport. The LIC determined that the construction of the hangar buildings would enhance the overall use of the airport and contribute to the growth of the airport, and the industrial and commercial uses that surround it."

Future plans for the airport may include a new terminal building to replace the current structure, a restaurant, and an observation deck to offer better views of the air traffic activity at Lakewood Airport. Funding for these projects would come from land sales under federal guidelines. Public financing, loans or bonding are not expected to be involved with any of these future projects.
