Member Milestones: Miguel Wilson

When he is not riding, 18-year-old Miguel Wilson from New Caney, Texas, can be found studying. He is currently a freshman at American University studying business administration and has struck a balance between competing and learning. Miguel's father, also named Miguel, grew up riding and passed the talent down to his son, who has financed his riding career by finding jobs as a working student. We recently caught up with Miguel and learned more about him with five questions!

Do you remember your first time on a horse?
My first time on a horse was when I was six and I was riding a pony bareback. I remember I slid right off, and for some reason wanted to do it again.

What is the best and worst thing that has happened to you in the show ring this year?
The best thing that has happened to me in the show ring this year is hard to pinpoint. Every time I get to go in the ring is a good moment for me. The worst moment is definitely when I was jogging a horse at a show in Lexington, Va., and it took off bucking.

What is your biggest riding goal right now?
My biggest goal is to continue to enjoy it because I think after working for so long I never appreciated what I had and the fact that I just really love horses.

You recently competed at the WIHS Regional Horse Show. What was that experience like?
I was coming straight from school to show in the MHSA Gittings Horsemanship Final riding a horse named Amazing F. My 20-minute drive turned into two hours because of road blocks and I got to the show with two minutes to walk, but the show was so accommodating and made us as riders feel so special. It's one of my favorite classes because it runs at night and feels really prestigious.

If in ten years you could be doing anything, what would it be?
I hope that I am having fun and doing what I love, whatever that may be.

Help Us Shape New Horsemanship Clinics
The USHJA is exploring the development of unmounted, educational clinics that focus on horsemanship for members and non-members around the country.

To help us in the development of such clinics, we are asking for your input into the types of topics that should be covered, the best areas of the country in which to host, times of year that are most convenient for members and other aspects.

Take a short survey to help us understand what would be most important to you as we develop unmounted, educational horsemanship clinics. Thank you for your time!
