This Month: Rugs, Tapestries, Fabrics, and more!
From the bark cloths of the Pacific Islands to medieval tapestries hung from castle walls, the shaggy julkhyrs that make up the bedding of Central Asian yurts, and of course James Dean's jeans, rugs and textiles are among the few universal aspects of human material culture and are nearly infinite in their composition and design. The ancient technology of weaving, passed down from generation to generation for tens of thousands of years, has protected us from the cold, heat and rain, projected social status, and has been at the center of our most sacred ceremonies.

We have always made cloth. Based on the evolution of the human louse there is evidence to suggest that we began wearing clothes 170,000 years ago - before the human exodus from Africa. We have even learned that Neanderthals wore tailored clothes. Rank badges, or mandarin squares, signified to the populace the status of officials in Imperial China, Korea, and Vietnam through the fanciful imagery of cranes, dragons, and other beasts. Tibetans wove rugs with tiger stripes as gifts to lamas to psychically protect them during meditation. The embroidered Bayeux Tapestry famously tells the story of the founding of modern England. The Navajo kidnapped Mexican women and girls and from them learned to make blankets to sell to tourists using designs from oriental rugs given to them by American entrepreneurs. The women of the tiny community of Gee's Bend, Alabama have been making their distinctive quilts based on African designs for 200 years. The T'bolis of the Philippines only incorporate patterns into their cloth that come in dreams, literally dream-weavers. The stories of our woven heritage are as varied as the textiles themselves.

Presented here are books that tell those stories.

Canton Trumdrum Indian Blanket Campaign
Author: Anonymous

Publisher: Canton Trumdrum
Place of Publication: Canton OH (1929)
Binding: Paperback

The Canton Trumdrum was an Ohio Corporation the applied for non-profit status from 1934 until 1976. The campaign for Indian Blankets was basically a contest where people paid a small sum and if their name was picked, they won a Cayuse Indian blanket. The fundraiser also received an Indian blanket.

If you read the fine print however, you realize that only the designs were from the Indians. In reality, the Pendletoon Woolen Mills produced the finished product (telling the reader this was much better than the "crude unfinished texture" that originated in the tepees of the wilderness.) The campaign was later cancelled. Also in the pamphlet is a story of U-ma-pine, Chief of the Cayuse Tribe, told with racist overtones. Available here.
