(
Joe Henderson was born on April 24th, 1937 in Lima, Ohio. One of fifteen children
)
|
|
It’s a mystery why no one has written a biography of Joe Henderson. This tenor saxophonist performed with everyone from Miles Davis to Blood Sweat and Tears. In the 1960’s, Henderson appeared on many of the best albums in the Blue Note catalogue: Lee Morgan’s
The Sidewinder, Horace Silver’s
Song for my Father, and Henderson’s debut album:
Page One. Moreover, Henderson was an accomplished composer: “Recorda-Me”, a Latin tune written when he was just 15, has become a jazz standard.
A quiet and unassuming man, Henderson did not excel at self-promotion. After leaving Blue Note, Henderson went through a long period of declining popularity, though his playing abilities never faltered. A major breakthrough came in 1992 when he recorded
Lush Life: the Music of Billy Strayhorn. Featuring Wynton Marsalis as a sideman, this album reestablished Henderson as a major jazz voice, selling 450,000 copies worldwide. By now, Henderson, a longtime smoker, had emphysema and needed a microphone to project on stage. His career resurgence was cut short in 1997 by a stroke. Joe Henderson died in 2001.

JAZZ PROSE:
ILLINOIS JACQUET
The State of Illinois
The nightclub's jammed tonight,
It's a frenzy under the pot lights and smoke,
As the jitterbug heats up,
The dance floor becomes an acrobatic display,
A shifting sea of back and forth,
Jump and spin choreography,
A carnival of polka dots and heels,
wide lapels and hats.
Illinois is at the helm this evening,
Charging full steam ahead,
Like a small plane pilot caught in a storm,
Dodging around the lightning bolts,
The rain pelting the wings and windshield,
His Tenor Sax drilling a gateway through the clouds,
The chaos of grey and white,
Pointing the way like a beacon,
A lighthouse to come home to.
The orchestra heeds the call and jumps on board,
Piling on the riffs,
The call and response encouragement,
Feeding the energy,
Burning it brighter,
The crowd moves and spins and sweats,
It's a celebration !
Raise a glass to the host.
