SAUSD COMMUNITY CELEBRATES CÍRCULOS' XQ SUPER SCHOOL STATUS
A community celebration was held October 25, 2017 in Downtown Santa Ana, highlighting the XQ Institute's selection of the Santa Ana Unified School District's (SAUSD) Círculos high school concept as a national XQ Super School. Círculos is being awarded a $2.5 million grant for development over the next five years by the XQ Institute as part of its Super School Project, which aims to rethink high school in America. Elements of Círculos are being implemented this fall at SAUSD's Advanced Learning Academy, Century High School and Cesar E. Chavez High School. "We're just super excited to really promote this with our community and let them know what this is about," Superintendent Stefanie P. Phillips, Ed.D., said in a new video about the event. THREE SAUSD EDUCATORS HONORED AT 2018 ORANGE COUNTY TEACHERS OF THE YEAR CELEBRATION
Katy Su of Martin Elementary,
Laura Compton of Willard Intermediate, and
Scott Glabb of Santa Ana High School were recognized during the 2018 Orange County Teachers of the Year Celebration this week at the Disneyland Resort Hotel in Anaheim.

SAUSD'S SUSIE LOPEZ-GUERRA, ED.D. NAMED AN O.C. HISPANIC WOMAN OF THE YEAR
The
League of United Latin American Citizens - Santa Ana LULAC Council #147 has named
Susie Lopez-Guerra, Ed.D., Director of Community Relations for SAUSD, as one of its Orange County Hispanic Women of the Year for 2017. Dr. Lopez-Guerra is being recognized for her contributions in the area of Community Relations. The group will recognize the Women of the Year during its annual awards banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. on November 4, 2017 at American Legion Orange Post #132, 143 S. Lemon St. in Orange. The dual purpose of the event is to acknowledge and recognize women of Hispanic descent and provide a venue for its fundraising efforts to award educational scholarships to Santa Ana students. SANTA ANA'S COACH "T" NAMED COACH OF THE WEEK BY LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
Santa Ana High School football coach Charlie TeGantvoort (Coach "T") was honored and recognized as the Coach of the Week by the Los Angeles Chargers. He was given a plaque and a $1,000 check during a ceremony in the school auditorium on October 25, 2017.

SANTA ANA, SADDLEBACK HIGH SCHOOLS HOLD NJROTC ANNUAL MILITARY INSPECTIONS
Santa Ana High School's NJROTC Unit held its Annual Military Inspection Pass-in-Review Ceremony on October 25, 2017. Cadets began assembling at 7 a.m. and marched in review in front of inspecting offers and guests, including
Board of Education members. At the conclusion, upperclassmen reported on the unit's goals and accomplishments. Principal
Jeff Bishop said NJROTC has become a signature program at the school. "It has won award after award and is recognized as one of the top in the nation," he said. In addition,
Saddleback High School also held its NJROTC Annual Military Inspection on October 24, 2017, which was also attended by Board of Education members. For photos from both, click

SIERRA PARTICIPATES IN 'INSIDE OUT' GLOBAL ART PROJECT
On October 24, 2017 Sierra Preparatory Academy received the first California installation by Inside Out, The People's Art Project, from France. This rare opportunity came about through the school's partnership with Turnaround Arts. Inspired by artist JR's large-format street "pastings", Inside Out gives everyone the opportunity to share their portrait and make a statement for what they stand for. Each group action around the world is documented, archived and exhibited online. Over 260,000 people have participated in 129 countries. "For Sierra it was about being able to share our story," said Principal Elisa Younger. "It has been a positive, culture-building element for our entire campus." To view more photos, click here.

CENTURY STUDENTS VIEW ARTWORK BY CHICANO ARTIST AT UC IRVINE
Forty art students from
Century High School recently visited the
UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts, where students got to see the work of the acclaimed Chicano artist Gilbert "Magu" Lujan. Students also toured the campus and schools of the arts so they could see the possibilities of jobs related to the creative economy from set design and filmmaking to photography, and the intersections between the arts and other areas of study like science and technology. Thanks to the support of the district's partnership with UC Irvine, SAUSD students have access to exploring those opportunities.

LATHROP HOLDS FIRST SATURDAY MATH CLUB MEETING OF SCHOOL YEAR
On October 21, 2017,
Lathrop Intermediate held its first Saturday Math Club meeting of the school year. Over 140 students from Lathrop Intermediate and Franklin, Roosevelt, Martin, Lowell, Pio Pico, Kennedy, Walker and Madison elementary schools (and for the first time OCCEA) attended from 9 a.m. to noon. Students engaged in problem solving, mental math, and math games. The club is made possible by volunteers, including SAUSD retiree Mrs. Walker, the Lathrop Math Department, Franklin teachers Ms. Lujan and Ms. Sweeney, and the Orange County Math Circle. It is now in its eighth year.

GODINEZ GRADUATE PENS ARTICLE ON POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF DACA DECISION
Luis Gonzalez, a Godinez Fundamental High School graduate and current Georgetown University student, recently wrote a story for the university's student newspaper about how his dream of becoming a teacher could be impacted if the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program ends and there is no replacement. In it, he also shares how he's been inspired by Mrs. Cortez, a teacher at Madison Elementary. "It is my hope that legislation - in particular, a clean Dream Act, or one without brutal enforcement measures - comes to fruition," he writes. To read the article, click
