ITEP USCG Day of Discovery 2016
Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach share search and rescue techniques with ITEP students during the annual Day of Discovery event.
Coastie for a Day: More Than 360 ITEP Students Visit the US Coast Guard Base in Terminal Island
ITEP students from as far as Barstow spent the day with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach for the signature  Day of Discovery event. In total, 366 students explored nine Coast Guard stations, which showcased careers in search and rescue, law enforcement, medicine, navigation, culinary arts, and the canine explosives detection team.

New ITEP-supported Linked Learning pathways at ESP Magnet High School, Los Angeles River School, Manual Arts, and Theodore Roosevelt High Schools also joined the fun, making it the biggest Day of Discovery to date. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard and Paxton Bowman, a former Coastie and active industry volunteer, were honored for their dedication and support to ITEP programs.

Special thanks to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach and their Partnership in Education (PIE) program, Captain Charlene Downey, LT Travis Thornell, and all USCG members who made the event possible.

Future STEM Leaders Come Together for Annual Retreat
For the second year in a row, ITEP students from Carson High School visited the South Coast Botanic Garden for an annual retreat. The all-day event gave freshmen the opportunity to learn more about ITEP and the school's Environmental Science Engineering and Technology (ESET) pathway.

This year, ITEP students took the lead in planning the retreat. Twenty-two seniors from ESET led 120 freshmen through engineering challenges and team-building activities.

A special thank you to South Coast Botanic Gardens; ESET Advisory Board Chair, Bob Devine from Tesoro; Ms. Tammy Bird and all Carson High School staff and chaperones. Last, but certainly not least, The Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Linked Learning (AMETLL) Consortium and LAUSD Linked Learning. Through these partnerships, we continue to inspire students at Carson High School while connecting them to exciting careers in advanced manufacturing, environmental science, and engineering technology.

Carmen Tovar, Program Manager at ITEP.
Staff Spotlight:
Carmen Tovar

Meet Carmen, Program Manager at ITEP. Carmen supports ITEP students and partners in Downey Unified School District (Columbus, Downey, and Warren High Schools) and Rancho Dominguez Preparatory School.

Her question:
What are you thankful for?

Her response:
I'm thankful for ITEP partners and volunteers because without them I wouldn't be able to hold mock interviews, industry coaching sessions, or even place students in work experience opportunities. I give thanks for all the wonderful partners that support the work we do here at ITEP.

Did you know? Our program team recently traveled to Chicago to participate in the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP) Conference. Together with the Southeast Los Angeles County (SELACO) Workforce Development Board and Downey Unified School District, Senior Program Manager, Eli Romero and Carmen led a workshop focused on developing successful partnerships between schools, businesses, and workforce development groups.
