Diocesan 100th Anniversary Commemoration
of Queen Lili'uokalani's Death

TO: The Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi

Diocesan 100th Anniversary Commemoration of Queen Liliʻuokalani Death
on Saturday, November 11th, 2017

The occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the death of Queen Lili'uokalani, with the tolling of bells and prayer and commemorative observances, statewide, are very appropriate and encouraged as an important memorial and remembrance of the Queen.

In the organizing taking place we are seeing very broad and diverse governmental, community, and interfaith participation and support. A special community event is planned for the Queen's Statue at the State Capitol at 8:30 AM on Nov. 11th. Hawaii's churches and communities are planning events and observances islands wide.

In the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i, all islands churches, schools, and missions, are encouraged to join together in the tolling of bells at 8:30 AM, and to conduct observances of meditation, song and prayer, appropriate for the day.

Please find in the link HERE, song, scripture, prayer, and collect appropriate for the occasion.

In regards to the progress of the Queen commemoration on the General Convention level, please be advised that at the 2015 General Convention, The Queen and several other proposed commemorations were referred to the Standing Commission of liturgy and Music, to be reviewed and considered. It is essential now in 2017-2018 that we take seriously that commemorations need to be taking place throughout our Diocese even in partnership and collaboration with the wider community. We will be documenting these at some time in the near future. While the Queen's Confirmation Day maybe more appropriate for us as a Diocesan Community, and the Anniversary of her death (November 11, 1917) seen as more traditional for the Episcopal Church's Calendar of Saints, the broader community of Hawai'i Nei recognizes her Birthday (September 2nd) with activities and commemorations. But for now at the time of the 100th Anniversary of her death, let us make a concerted effort to assure a very broad based and statewide, inclusive community event to commemorate her death. This will be very important for the Standing Committee on Liturgy and Music in their continuing discussion and review, leading up to the 2018 General Convention.

Please pray and highlight in the schedule of commemorations Nov. 11th the 100th Anniversary of the Queen's death as day to remember her life of faith, devotion and service to Ke Akua Mana Loa.

Aloha Ke Akua,

Bob
