Digging the New Cheyenne

Cheyenne Traditional School celebrated an exciting milestone in its construction process this week. Students helped Governing Board members, District administrators and PTO leaders break ground on Cheyenne's new gymnasium and science labs.

Students are as excited about their new facilities as we are, so it's only fitting that they helped turn the first dirt. Speakers included Governing Board Vice President Pam Kirby, Superintendent Dr. Denise Birdwell, Cheyenne Principal Grace Stombres, PTO President Rachel Feitlinger, architect Tom O'Neil from Orcutt Winslow and Barry Chasse, owner of Chasse Building Team.

Cheyenne's new additions are on track for a ribbon cutting later this year, and we expect to see 8th grade graduation in the brand new gym next spring!

on  New Turf

Last week saw the dedication of new football fields at Coronado and Saguaro high schools, the first major projects to be completed with 2016 bond funds. They are beautiful!

Tracks that surround the fields are scheduled to be completed in time for the spring track and field seasons.

The fields are also used by soccer teams, marching bands and color guard teams, so they will be put to good use!

Calling All Sports!

The first big sports event of the new school year convenes this Saturday, September 9 with a day's worth of baseball (boys) and volleyball (girls) competition between 850 of SUSD's middle grades student athletes.  The event is so big, it's spread across four schools and a city park!

For a complete rundown of the 7th annual Middle School Fall Sports Festival schedule, click here.  The festivities get underway as early as 7:30 a.m.

The middle/K-8 school intramural sports season gets underway next week.

Harvey-damaged School

Thanks to the generosity of the Hohokam Elementary School community, some families in the Houston, Texas suburbs are getting through the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey with some extra supplies.

Hohokam parent Becky Wolf headed up the Texas-bound caravan of three trucks, an SUV and a U-Haul trailer that was welcomed warmly at Loraine T. Golbow Elementary School, a Title I school (as is Hohokam) that is part of the Katy Independent School District, north of Houston.

Golbow was lucky to have sustained relatively minor damage in the storm. Another school in the district will occupy part of a University of Houston satellite campus on Monday, when the new school year begins.

The Hohokam and Golbow parents and the schools' principals plan to stay in touch.  After all, birds fly together!

Coronado Success Initiative Update

The Coronado High School community - from students to teachers to parents - is fully engaged in the project undertaken at the beginning of 2017 to better prepare Coronado students for success in college and career.

The teaching staff was hired specifically to help implement the Coronado Success Initiative, a multi-year, SUSD effort supported by Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University and the financial backing of the Scottsdale Charros.

Teachers met several times over the summer to get to know each other and team build, in preparation to welcome Don students back to school last month.

In exchange for an annual stipend, teachers committed to after-school tutoring duties and several weekend professional development sessions to learn new ways to connect instruction to higher levels of student learning and achievement. The first of these Saturday sessions (pictured left) took place August 26th.

Another linchpin to the work of the Coronado Success Initiative is support from the school's and learning community's parents. Similar to the Initiative's initial kickoff in January, Spanish-speaking parents have taken part in their own 'design day,' and continue to meet (pictured below). Organizers report that the group has already outgrown two, smaller meeting spaces!

The SUSD Foundation is a key community partner of our school district.  It provides funding that supports students' educational excellence and sustained success, as well as teacher and student grants, educator development programs and more, all of which enhance the SUSD learning environment.  The Foundation's all-volunteer board of directors works tirelessly, year after year, to be able to support the ever-evolving needs of the district's  educators and students by bringing together the local business community at events like this weekend's Gala.

SUSD is deeply grateful for its ongoing partnership with the Foundation.  Find out more about the Foundation's good works here.

Class of '87

The 30th Reunion of Saguaro High School's Class of 1987 is next weekend, Sept. 15-16!  Catch up with the cool cats from your class by emailing
[email protected] or sending a text to reunion organizer Lori Carver at (952) 454-4394.

The festivities begin with a campus tour on Friday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m, right before the big game vs. St. Mary's at 7 p.m.  There have been lots of changes on campus in recent years, but the Sabercat spirit lives on - just ask Sinbad!

If you helped teach the Class of '87, please drop by the tour to say 'hi!' to some of your former students.

Peachjar Too Plentiful?

We're getting a lot of great feedback on the new Peachjar digital flyer system for SUSD schools, but we also know communications can sometimes clutter your email.   While Peachjar is designed to cluster flyers together in as few emails as possible, sometimes it's still more emails than you care to get in one week.

Here's a helpful hint:
The next time you get a Peachjar flyer email, scroll to the bottom and click, "Manage Delivery Preferences." That will open a page with a drop-down menu, where you can select whether you want to receive emails daily, weekly or immediately.  It takes less than 30 seconds, and there is no need to sign in.  We recommend selecting "weekly" to keep away the clutter and still get all the info you need.

Arcadia Filmmakers 'Supremely' Rewarded

Recent Arcadia grad Allison Gooch and current senior Jacob Staudenmaier are Arizona winners of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' 2017 Civics Contest, "Not to Be Forgotten - Legal Lessons of the Japanese Internment."

For their video entry, the Titan filmmakers tracked down and interviewed a retired Sun City doctor who, in his youth, was assigned to one of the World War II-era U.S. camps.  They were privileged to meet and receive their award from former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Allison continues her passion for film-making this fall at Chapman University in Orange, California.   She is one of 70 students accepted into Chapman's prestigious film production program this year.

Both Allison and Jacob were students of Arcadia film teacher Eric Luse.  You may be familiar with another of their collaborations, a "La La Land"-based 'promposal' video that went viral this past spring.

Meanwhile, Luse's program continues to garner attention, with a nice write-up in this month's Arcadia News.
