If you are strong in math and interested in business and economics, then you might want to consider a career in  actuarial science .  Actuaries evaluate the likelihood of future events, design creative ways to reduce the likelihood of undesirable events and decrease the impact of undesirable events. Actuaries find ways to manage risk using strong analytical skills, business knowledge and understanding of human behavior to manage the complex risks facing society today. They play key roles on management teams of companies that deal with risk, such as insurance companies and actuarial consulting firms. In a fast-changing world, with emerging risks and the need for creative ways to tackle them, there are constant opportunities for personal and professional growth. Mary Grace, a double major in atmospheric sciences and anthropology, is extra busy as a member of the Ohio State Meteorology Club and a weather spotter. While at Ohio State she's taken advantage of opportunities that have expanded her knowledge in both disciplines.  A 10-week field work project in Key Largo, Florida allowed her to observe first-hand the effects of sea level rise on the Everglades. An education abroad program took her to Ireland where she took part in an archaeological excavation of a medieval monastery, attended lectures on Irish history and visited historic sites.  Read more.

As our Peer Career Advisors review resumes, we see some common areas of confusion. Are you making some of these common mistakes on your resume?

1) Not listing your education at the top of the page. This is what's most relevant to you currently, show employers you're working hard to complete a degree!

2) Listing character traits in your Skills Section. Show the recruiters you're a "team player" and have "good communication skills" through examples in your bullet points under each experience.

3) Using objective statements. These are often too broadly worded, and recruiters say they're not necessary anyways!

Early January Education Abroad Program Application Deadlines

As winter break approaches, keep in mind that many study abroad programs have application deadlines occurring in early January. For a list of programs and deadlines, visit oia.osu.edu .

The Office of International Affairs offers study abroad programs specifically intended for first and second year students of any major.  These programs focus on the history, culture, current events and major issues of one specific country.   Global May programs typically have a January 4 application deadline .
