Dear Saint Rose Families,

We are officially into the heart of the academic year.  August feels like a distant memory.  Homework and assessments are a regular part of the routine.  September 13 marks the midpoint of the first quarter. It is hard to believe so much time has already passed.
I hope that your child is making the spiritual, academic and social progress that satisfies your goals. Our teachers are great partners with you in the education and formation of your children. Please feel free to reach out to them with questions as we move forward.
Next week we will dedicate our weekly Mass collection to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.  We know that their rebuilding will be a daunting process.  Please send in any monetary donations with your children to be deposited at Mass.  We will also have a place to donate at Donuts for Dads on Tuesday, September 12

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend. I will see you at Mass.

Sincerely,

Bryon Borgelt

Depression Awareness & Suicide Prevention
at Saint Rose

This week, our 6-8th graders listened to a presentation about depression, suicide, and understanding the warning signs among students their age. This has been the 6th year that St. Rose School has hosted this program. The speaker was from the Children's Resource Center, a local mental health agency that presents at all the schools in Wood County. Additionally, for the 8th graders, the program included an emphasis on how to help a friend in need who may be struggling with drugs, self injury, bullying, and depression. This is a great time to continue to talk to your children about any stresses in their life and if they may be struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts. It is always a good idea to ask! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the school counselor.

A resource list of outside professionals went home to your students along with other resources to discuss at home.

  • At the Middle School Parent Meeting, information was discussed about common social issues that arise, stressors of that age, and warning signs of depression parents can identify. Then the policy on threats to safety was reviewed.

We here at St. Rose School take every comment about suicide seriously. As a way to get students connected to the support they need, St. Rose School's policy about threat to self or others states:
'When any student verbalizes a threat of physical harm to him/herself or others, the student is required to get evaluated by an outside professional to ensure their own personal safety or the safety of others. The student will not be permitted to return to school until documentation is provided to the principal, which deems the student is safe to return. The parent/guardian of the student is responsible for the proper medical follow up that may encompass various financial responsibilities. In such instances, administration and teachers will be notified to ensure the safety of the student(s).' p. 55

  • The school counselor always meets with students who may need some support, so please do not hesitate to contact her if you have any concerns.

New Birthday and Party Treat Policy

Out of a desire to create a policy that is safe and inclusive for our students, the Saint Rose faculty revised the birthday and party treat policy.  These changes represent a great deal of planning and feedback.  They are designed to preserve a culture of parties and birthday treat celebrations, with some new restrictions that provide better safeguards against allergens in the classroom. The biggest change is that all snacks that are brought in must be commercially produced and include the ingredients list from the commercial producer.  Home made goods will not be allowed.  The policy is detailed below and will go into effect immediately.

Birthday/Party Treat Policy
Birthday treats/healthy snacks/holiday party treats may be brought to school.  If the treat is for a child's birthday, parents must notify the teacher prior to the day the treat is brought in.  Parents should contact the classroom teacher 24 hours prior to bringing a snack or treat to class.  A student may need to celebrate their birthday on another day due to a special event.

To better ensure the safety of all of our students, any food item that is to be distributed during school must be commercially produced and labeled with a list of ingredients (no homemade treats are permitted). The food item will be distributed at the discretion of the child's teacher.

A list of allergens will be shared by the teacher.

Although we try to provide the safest environment for all of our students, Saint Rose cannot guarantee the food safety of any food item that is brought to school for distribution.  Families of students that have allergies are encouraged to send in some special treats to be kept by the teachers for any special dietary needs their children have. These treats must be shelf stable.  The teacher will keep the snacks for the year to distribute when food treats are brought in.

Please note that, instead of a food item, families may send in other items.  Some ideas include:
A favorite book to be donated to the class
Stickers
A small craft for the class to make
School supplies

*Please reach out to your child's teacher for any other ideas.
