Sowing the Seeds

Phillip Lewers (pictured with his sister Rachel) donated the proceeds from his farm stand to support CARPLS.

'Tis the season for giving and here's a real heartwarmer sent to us by former CARPLS development director Susan Lewers.

Susan's son Phillip spent the summer growing vegetables and herbs in a garden he planted and tended at his grandmother's home. (Phillip's grandmother, Jeanne Tsolakos, is also CARPLS former office manager.)

Phillip harvested the produce and sold his bounty at a homemade farm stand this fall. He  earned $12.

"He decided he wanted to donate it to a good cause," says Susan, who recently sent CARPLS a check for $12.  "Phillip chose CARPLS because his mom and grandma had worked there and he knew [you] did important work."

"We were very touched by Phillip's kind and selfless gesture," says Tanya Pietrkowski, Director of Development. "Every dollar helps us in our mission to provide everyday justice to everyday people!"

Trivial P ursuits

Team FTI Consulting, Inc. beat a field of tough competitors to come out on top at our annual trivia fundraiser.

The tension was palpable - and the laughs plentiful - at Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Trivia, CARPLS Associate Board's annual fundraiser.

The event was held on November 17th at Bar Louie, 333-335 N Dearborn. The lively competition drew 180 attendees and raised more than $13,000 for CARPLS services. Brendan Greeley, co-host of the Matt & Brendan show on The Steve Dahl Network, served as emcee.

Competitors answered questions from five categories: Presidents & First Ladies; Sports; Music; Movies/Television; and Social Justice.

Of the 30 competing teams, FTI Consulting, Inc. emerged the winner thanks to the smarts of team members Eitan Neumark, Adam Harsha, Dan Miller and Megan O'Leary.

Our two runner-up teams were MacGruber and Heidrick & Struggles.

Thanks to all who participated!

CARPLS Hosts Chinese Delegation

CARPLS recently opened its doors to a group of leaders from  the city government of Shenzen, China.
Located in southern China, Shenzhen is one of the country's most densely populated cities with more than 18 million residents. Its flourishing economy motivated the local government to research various methods to improve public services in order to achieve a balance between economic growth and social development.

To this end, 18 delegates recently visited the greater Chicago area to experience and research government administration.

A group of nine delegates with a special focus on law stopped in at CARPLS on November 17th. They had a busy morning where they participated in a tour of our call center, as well as a video presentation and Q. & A. led by Al Schwartz, Executive Director, and Pat Wrona, Director of Legal Services.

"We were very happy to show the delegates how our agency works to help low- and moderate-income clients in Cook County and they were very eager to learn more about CARPLS specifically and legal aid in general," Pat says.

The delegates engaged in a Q. & A. led by Al Schwartz, Executive Director, and Pat Wrona, Director of Legal Services.

Delegation members found their visit edifying.

"We learned a lot from [CARPLS] and respect what you are doing," says Chen Huihuang, Deputy Director, Legislation Division for Environmental & Resources of Legislative Affairs Office, Shenzhen Municipal People's Government. "CARPLS is a great organization and you are doing a great job."
