150th Regional Celebrations
Northern Region
The northern area of the diocese hosted the second regional celebration of the 150th year of the Episcopal Church in Utah. They selected the Youth Impact facility in Ogden as the venue. The September 30th evening featured food, music, fun and raising money for ministry. As in all regional celebrations, Bishop Scott B. Hayashi welcomed the guests to reflect on the work of the church over the last century and a half. Youth Impact is one of those community ministries that features the outreach of the church as a concept inspired by Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle in 1867. The program is a safe place for hundreds of at-risk youth in the Ogden area. The youth come from all over the area to work together on projects, do their homework, eat dinner and participate in their own service programs. Youth Impact started with a small group in the basement of Good She
pherd Church and has become a highly successful community resource under director Robb Hall.

The celebration marking the Episcopal Church's 150th year in Utah continues. Bishop Hayashi made his way to Vernal to spend time with members of all three local congregations: Holy Spirit, Randlett, St. Elizabeth's, Whiterocks, and St. Paul's in Vernal. St. Paul's hosted the evening in their beautiful community building, with a delicious Dutch oven dinner provided by a local caterer. Many good conversations occurred among people of the different churches, and Tom Elder (pictured above) provided sing-along music for the evening.
Bishop Hayashi presented a brief but powerful lesson on hope, so badly needed in our world today. The Diocese of Utah has been a sign of hope here for a century and a half, and we have important roles to play in that regard in the times ahead. The Bishop challenged this group to get together again soon, especially if Tom and Rev. Michael from St. Elizabeth's would include his guitar in a "local band." We look forward to that and don't worry,
the celebrations will continue. Bishop Hayashi has plans to visit every region of the state.

Unless You Become Like a Child
By: The Rev. Michael Carney
Vicar, St. Elizabeth's, White Rocks, UT
At first the Prayer Cards were a way for the children to make their own creative responses. At the beginning of the sermon I'd invite them to get the basket of colored markers and plain white cards, and at the middle of the service they'd present their work. The piano is nearly covered with scenes of the church building and family groups and illustrations of the stories I've told. The pictures are wonderful, and they show how
engaged the children are in worship. One Sunday in September there were five grade-school-aged kids in church, more than usual. There was a need for special prayers that day: one of the visiting artists from ArtsKids had been injured in a pit bull attack. The girls remembered her from Summer Camp and responded immediately to my invitation to make her a special card. They clustered around a small table at the church entry, busily drawing on a large piece of art paper.

Province VIII Altar Guild Meets at ECCU

Photo & content courtesy of Province VIII Newsletter
Since 2011, Province VIII has held an annual Altar Guild meeting in non-General Convention years to bring together members from across the Province to build community, offer practical training, share resources, and focus on the spiritual nature of Altar Guild work. The theme of this year's program, held at the Episcopal Church Center of Utah (ECCU) on September 15th and 16th, was
Altar Guild: A Spiritual Ministry.
The keynote speaker, The Rev. Dr. Eric K. Hinds, rector of St. Matthew's, San Mateo, CA, talked about the Martha/Mary dichotomy that Altar Guild members face. With a series of tasks to complete, it is easy to forget that such work should be performed in a contemplative, prayerful way. Fr. Eric has deep experience, having served as Sacristan in seminary, so he understands the jobs to be done as well as the pressure to do things in a timely way and to do them to perfection. As a follower of Benedictine spirituality, he also understands the need to perform all work in a prayerful, thoughtful way. He provided meeting attendees with many suggestions and resources for arriving in the sacristy in an appropriate frame of mind (music, prayer, environment...) and suggestions on how to maintain a respectful, worshipful attitude. Attendees were enthusiastic about the talk and workshop as witnessed by many questions and also by continued discussion through the weekend.

This year's theme was "Fall into Faith with Fun." Campers and staff explored ways to connect with each other in faith. Throughout the weekend campers knitted hats for people in need at the Road Home. They also enjoyed the beautiful fall foliage, played games, hiked and tackled the climbing wall. The weekend was capped off by a fun filled Halloween party that included music, dancing and decorating pumpkins and cookies.
