Suss Family Celebrates Bar Mitzvah at TABC with Lively Hachnasat Sefer Torah
For the Suss family from Teaneck, their son, Rafi's Bar Mitzvah presented an amazing opportunity to dedicate and donate a sefer Torah to Torah Academy of Bergen County where Rafi's older brother Eytan is a freshman. They celebrated with a Hachnasat Sefer Torah at TABC, in which the guests joined together with TABC students to celebrate the arrival of the new Torah. Rafi and his parents decided that this would be a  unique and meaningful experience for Rafi to enter gil mitzvot.

AP English Synthesis Practice
Mrs. Miller's eleventh grade AP English students are learning how to compose arguments using a variety of sources. Using methodology that she learned at Fordham University's AP English Language and Composition workshop last summer, Mrs. Miller gave her students the prompt, "Should summer vacation be extended, shortened, eliminated, or revised, and why?" and instructed them to interview each other about their opinions. Because the best synthesis arguments involve sources in conversation with each other, students benefited from sharing their opinions and hearing from their peers.
Josh Cohen '07 Visits Economics  Classes
Who better to come and address students in the Introductory Economics classes than TABC alumnus, Joshua Cohen '07, who initiated TABC's original investment club? On October 18th, Josh visited TABC and met with the students in Mrs. Reichardt's classes, speaking about his own experiences in the world of finance.

Mrs. Reichardt was Josh's teacher at TABC and they have stayed in touch over the years as Josh completed his education and began his career. Even while he was a student in TABC, Josh was already very interested in the world of finance and investments. As hakarat hatov for his former teacher and TABC, Josh visits Mrs. Reichardt's classes twice each year. In semester one he introduces the students to the basics of investing. During the second semester Josh will return and acquaint students with more sophisticated investment strategies. The students enjoyed his talk, as they raised many insightful observations and questions.  Many thanks to Joshua Cohen for his dedication to TABC and we look forward to his next visit!
Economics Classes Brave Wall Street
Why is the heart of New York's financial district known as Wall Street?  Does the Wall Street Bull sculpture on Broadway really bring you luck if you rub his head? What's with all those hand signals and gestures of the traders on the floor of the stock exchange? These questions and many more were explored and answered as students in both Introductory Economics classes, accompanied by their instructor, Mrs. Cary Reichardt and Ms. Donna Hoenig, participated in a tour of New York's financial district on Tuesday, Oct.24th. The tour began with a historical overview of the area from its Dutch colonial origins, as the group strolled over to the Museum of American Finance, passing Alexander Hamilton's grave on their way!

At the Museum of American Finance the students were able to view many of the exhibits which described the Federal Reserve Bank system, trading stocks, bonds and commodities, famous American entrepreneurs and the circulation of money. Kudos to Yehuda Saks for actually spotting a stock certificate that was issued to Bernie Madoff on display! (The discovery was followed by an explanation of what a Ponzi scheme is.) As the weather began to challenge them, the group braved the downpour and winds, making their way to their lunch stop at Bravo Pizza. After the lunch break, the tour guide led the group to Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorial. Despite the downpour, everyone was visibly moved and had many questions about the site and the symbolism of the memorial itself.

Savoring My 'Sephardic Bar Mitzvah'
By Rabbi Jachter

I was struck with stage fright as the time for the Torah reading began. This journey began back in August on the Thursday prior to Shabbat Nachamu. The time for Torah reading at Congregation Shaarei Orah, the Sephardic Congregation of Teaneck, had come, and no one present knew the Torah reading. I decided that since I knew the Ashkenazic version of the reading and I had heard Sephardic reading so many times in my capacity as rav of Shaarei Orah, that I would give it a try. Lo and behold, the reading emerged as a good-quality Sephardic-Yerushalmi-style Torah reading.

To read more about Rabbi Jachter's "Sephardic Bar Mitzvah" and how TABC students calmed his nerves and gave him nachat, enjoy the  article  from this week's issue of The Jewish Link of New Jersey.
Alumni Nachat
Moshe Papier '19 brought great surprise and joy to Rabbi Jachter this past Wednesday. He called Binyamin Jachter '17 to "sit in" on his father's Y15 Sefer Yonah Shiur via telephone.  Binyamin, who is learning at Yeshivat Shaalvim in Israel this year, actively participated and added three important points via speakerphone.  Binyamin's "presence" added a sweet note to a most wonderful Y15 group - who are very smart, very active and very sweet Talmidim.
