Unfortunately, the last few weeks have brought a variety of natural disasters-from fires in the Pacific Northwest to Hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Our hearts are with the many who have or will be affected by these natural disasters. Many thanks to everyone who has already stepped forward to provide assistance and support to their fellow equestrians.
This disaster, as with many, does not end with the passing of the main event, and we know the recovery will take some time. If you are looking for a way to assist those affected by this disaster, here are a few options to consider:
- USHJA, in partnership with other equestrian organizations, is supporting an effort to collect and ship supplies to those affected by Harvey. This effort is being managed by the Association of American Equine Practitioners and has already been expanded to include those affected by Irma. Click here for more information.
USHJA will continue to seek other avenues to support affected members and will keep you informed of those sources.

Horse Health and Wellness Series: Longeing with Purpose |
USHJA's bimonthly series on horse health and wellness is based on guidance and input from the USHJA Horse and Rider Advocates Committee. This series aims to provide members with information they can use, along with the regular guidance of a veterinarian, to help keep their equine partners happy and healthy throughout the year.
Longeing can be a wonderful training tool for rider and horse if used in an appropriate manner with correct equipment and in a safe and secure location. It is also important for trainers to teach and enforce proper longeing techniques employed by their staff, both at home and at competitions.
This short educational video provides guidance on appropriate longeing techniques. Stay tuned for more educational videos, including a Spanish version of this video, at ushja.org/BestPractices.

The USHJA is pleased to announce that 2018 will bring the Green Hunter Incentive Program to even more competitors as it expands to include horses competing in Green Hunter 3'6" and 3'9".
"We're excited to bring this program to the 3'6" and 3'9" Green Hunters," said Ron Danta, chair of the International Hunter Derby and Incentive Task Force. "We've seen a drop in 3'6" and 3'9" Green Hunters recently, and we're hoping that the addition of the Incentive Program for these fence heights will encourage Green development at this level to feed into the Performance Hunters."
