Russell's Ritings,
Pondering our wonderful universe spurs most of us on to faith. We all marveled at the recent eclipse. I was amazed! Albert Einstein once wrote: "I want to know how God created the world. I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts; the rest are details."
Annie Dillard, in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, wrote:
"The question from agnosticism is, Who turned on the lights?
That question from faith is, Whatever for?"
As people of faith we believe God turned on the lights. Creationists believe that as well as those who subscribe to a Big Bang theory. As Genesis said, "And God said, 'let there be light', and suddenly there was light." But the other question is, "What for?"
Perhaps we are called to turn darkness into light! Jesus once said, "I am the light of the world." As His disciples we are called to be light in the midst of darkness...rays of hope amid fear...rays of strength amid weakness...rays of grace amid injustice...rays of goodness amid evil. We are share smiles, compassion, encouragement, advocacy, and love - thus brightening the world around us.
The text says, "Let there be light" and that text is talking about YOU! Go and be LIGHT!
This Sunday our sermon is "Face to Face with God" and the text is Exodus 19: 16 - 24. We will have our annual Fall Festival (prelude to Sunday School beginning, BBQ lunch provided, Bouncy Castle, our annual PIE BAKING CONTEST, games, and other happenings). C U here - at the friendliest place around!
Also, there is a very important SPRC meeting after the 10:30 service. Members, please take note. We will be able to get a bite of lunch, but this is a meeting we ask you put on your calendar and make every effort to attend.
Blessings,
Russell

Sunday, September 17: 9:30 - 10:20 am
THE HISTORY OF METHODISM
From the Wesleys until today we will look at how the Methodist movement has become one of the most prominent church families.
Sunday, September 24: 9:30 - 10:20 am
THE BELIEFS OF A UNITED METHODIST
Someone has said Methodism is the common denominator of the denominations. Wesley said, "If your heart is as my heart is, give me your hand for we are brothers." We will look at the diversity of belief systems within our church and also at the core beliefs we do not compromise.
Sunday, October 1: 9:30 - 10:20 am
THE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
How are we organized? What is our structure? What is "holy conferencing"? How do Bishops, Superintendents, and pastors "connect"? What is the "connectional" system? How does UMCE fit within the connection?
Sunday, October 8: 9:30 - 10:20 am
A LOOK AT UMCE
What makes our own local church so special? Where have we come from, where are we, and where are we going?
Sunday, October 15, 22, 29: 9:30 - 10:20 am
HOW TO GROW A CHURCH (led by Pastor Russell)
During these weeks we will look at the principles of church growth, the keys to church growth, the costs of church growth, and strategies which will help UMCE become the church God wants it to become.
