Mack & Kitty Scallon Family Member Visits Sherman College

Dr. Francis Kelly, a retired physicist from Maryland, has been traveling to Georgia in recent years to visit family there. Since learning that there was a building at a chiropractic college in Spartanburg named after his great aunt and uncle, Drs. Michael “Mack” and Katherine “Kitty” Scallon, Dr. Kelly has made it a priority to visit the Sherman College campus during his trips through the area. During his recent visit in early November, Dr. Kelly met with the founder of the college, Dr. Thom Gelardi, and the two found much to talk about.

The Scallons were both arrested for “practicing medicine without a license” in 1949, before chiropractic licensure was allowed in their state (New York). Since the Scallons knew they were not practicing medicine, they decided to not pay the fine, and instead make a statement by going to jail for chiropractic, as so many other chiropractic pioneers did back then. Sherman Employees Help
with UWP Overflow: Thanksgiving

Sherman College participated in the United Way of the Piedmont’s Fall volunteer project – Overflow: Thanksgiving! This project makes it possible for community partners to feed hundreds of families this Thanksgiving; more than 800 meals will be distributed to families this year, far exceeding the United Way’s goal of 500 meals. Sherman College employees filled 23 boxes and also provided extra goodies for these families. Students Beat Alumni
in Pride Cup Competition 2016

Based on the percentage of participation, Sherman College students (and those voting for them) claimed bragging rights and the Sherman Pride Cup Trophy in the inaugural Pride Cup TEXT2GIVE Challenge. Congratulations to the student body for soundly executing a successful challenge. The campaign raised $500 to be awarded as tuition credit next quarter to the student(s) who best demonstrate their Sherman Pride in a submission to the Alumni Association by November 30. The winner(s) will be determined by Alumni Association officers and announced in December. See full details.

Sherman Welcomes, New Returning Trustees

Judy Campanale, D.C., has been appointed to her first term to the Sherman College Board of Trustees, effective October 7, 2016, through October 2020. Campanale, a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Straight Chiropractic, is owner of Strauss Chiropractic Center in Levittown, PA, and travels throughout the country speaking on various topics and platforms. She has served as president of the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations (now IFCO) and continues to serve on the board of the IFCO. “Sherman College has served as the philosophical anchor for the chiropractic profession for decades,” she said. “It is an honor to serve and assist the college in this effort.”

In addition, Edward Marram, Ph.D. was appointed to a second term as trustee, effective October 2016. Marram has served as an important member of Sherman’s Board during his first term and is glad to continue to offer his professional and academic experiences to the college as a trustee. Marram currently serves as director of the Entrepreneurial Center at Babson College in Wellesley, MA. “Chiropractic care has been an important part of my physical well-being for many years,” Marram said of the importance of the profession.

Sherman College Board of Trustees Chair Peter Kevorkian, D.C., looks forward to Campanale’s contributions to the board. “Dr. Campanale will be a tremendous asset to the Sherman Board of Trustees,” he said. In addition, he expressed his appreciation for Marram’s commitment to continued service. “Dr. Marram’s input and perspective to the Sherman board has been invaluable,” he said. “We are excited to continue to benefit from his leadership in this time of Sherman expansion and growth.”

Ambassadors Serve the

Spartanburg Community

The Sherman College Student Ambassadors donated a full dinner to the Hope Center for Children as part of its outreach this fall. The Hope Center for Children provides a continuum of care to meet the needs of the children and families in the Spartanburg community. Its services include: home visitation and prevention focused case management when a child is able to live at home; an emergency shelter for when children are removed from their home due to abuse and neglect; longer term residential care for girls in foster care; and finally, support for children’s transition back to family life following an adoption or re-unification with kin.

Fall 2016 Showcase Sherman
Weekend a Success

Sherman College welcomed 71 prospective student and 39 guests for the final 2016 Showcase Sherman eekend. Now the college is gearing up for 2017. Showcase Sherman Weekend dates are as follows: January 27-28, May 5-6 (during Lyceum), July 28-29, and October 27-28. Showcase Sherman Weekend is an event for prospective students to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and is designed to ignite students’ passion for leadership as well as help them begin their pursuit of becoming the next generation of DCs2B. Sherman Recruiters Visit 125+ Campuses in Fall Season

Sherman College has had a very busy and productive recruiting season this fall. The recruiting team, led by Director of Recruitment Services and Presidential Initiatives Rolando Rivera, visited 125 different college campuses sharing information about careers in chiropractic and what makes Sherman College the preeminent choice for a chiropractic education.

Recruiters Michael Cooper and Lina Guillen carried out 100 of these recruitment events; other college staff members assisted their efforts. Student ambassadors called ROAR Student Leaders also participated in these events, speaking to their peers about their Sherman College experiences.

Sherman was represented in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah and Nevada in events from September 1 to November 17. Some of the prominent colleges and universities that Sherman College representatives visited at this fall included Pennsylvania State University, University of South Carolina, University of Virginia, Liberty University, NC State, Auburn, Georgia, Emory, Mercer, University of Mississippi, Clafin, Alcorn State, University of Utah, Utah State, BYU, Pepperdine University and California San Bernardino.

Faculty Research Accepted for Presentation at ACC-RAC

Research projects from Sherman faculty members Drs. Brian Dooley, Tate Gentile, Amilliah Kenya and Charles Kenya have been accepted for poster presentations by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges Research Agenda Conference (ACC-RAC). The conference will be held in Washington, DC, March 15-18, 2017.

Gentile’s submission is titled, “The Interpersonal Processes of Care Experienced by Patients in a Chiropractic Teaching Clinic.”
Dooley's submission is titled, “Chiropractic Students’ Reliance and Self-Confidence to Meet Life’s Challenges via Their Sense of Coherence.”
The submission by Amilliah Kenya and Charles Kenya is titled, “A Comparison of Basic Science Scores on the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners Part I Examination Between Tutors and Tutees at a Chiropractic College.”

Dr. Joel Alcantara mentored the projects by Drs. Dooley and Gentile. Assistant Director of Research Dr. John Hart mentored the project by Drs. Amilliah Kenya and Charles Kenya. Sherman Well Represented
at New Beginnings

Sherman College was well represented at the New Beginnings 25th Anniversary Celebration October 17-19, with many students and college employees in attendance. The college sponsored the event.

President Edwin Cordero spoke on “Becoming a Master Chiropractic Communicator” for the organization’s new business mentoring program; he also spoke about leadership with chiropractors and students. In addition, he gave a philosophy talk and spoke at a Sherman-sponsored luncheon.

Executive Vice President Neil Cohen spoke to the group about chiropractic philosophy. Practice Success Program Director Brian Dooley presented, “Do We Know What We Say We Do? What Exactly is a Principled Chiropractor?” and Dean of Clinical Sciences Armand Rossi shared his experiences of selling his home and practice and moving to South Carolina from Florida, buying a new home, and starting a new job at Sherman College, all in just five months’ time.

Corderos Attend SMC

Presidential Investiture

Sherman President Edwin Cordero, D.C., and First Lady Debbie Cordero recently attended the investiture of W. Scott Cochran as the eighth president of Spartanburg Methodist College at the Bridges Arena on the SMC campus.

Cochran is a graduate of Wofford College and earned an MBA from Duke University. He has extensive experience in both business and higher education. His 20 years in business include roles as a senior executive in the US and internationally with GMAC, UPS Capital and Milliken & Company. Mr. Cochran served Wofford College for seven years as Dean of The Space. He is a Liberty Fellow.

Spartanburg Methodist College is the only two-year college in South Carolina that combines the benefits of a private school education with the college experience of living on campus. Over 90 percent of the graduates transfer to continue their pursuit of a baccalaureate degree. Dr. Cordero is pictured with Teresa and Scott Cochran.

Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers is Full Steam Ahead

The Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) began a new class in San Diego, CA, October 29-30, 2016. Dr. Steve Tullius joined Dr. Bill Decken as an instructor and spoke on the topic of Vitalism in Practice. Upcoming ACP modules will be held in San Francisco and will return to San Diego for the final module. Interested in joining the ACP? Sherman College is currently in the very early planning stages of bringing the ACP back to the Southeast. The program would kick off at Lyceum 2017 (Lyceum registration is included in ACP investment of $2,195 for D.C.s) and would continue in Charlotte, NC, for the remainder of 2017-2018. If you or someone you know would be interested in this five-module course that is a precursor to the Diplomate in Philosophical Chiropractic Standards (DPhCS), please submit your information to receive future updates on this upcoming ACP offering.

Stetzel Receives IFCO Student Leader Scholarship

Sherman College student William Stetzel has received the 2016 Student Leader Scholarship from the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (IFCO). This award is given to IFCO student members who demonstrate outstanding leadership skills. In addition to Stetzel, this year’s recipients include Melanie Freiwald, Marcie McKenna, Timothy Saltys and Katie Schlein.

The IFCO Student Leader Scholarship committee reviewed dozens of applications and nominations. “We were very impressed with the caliber of the submissions for the scholarship,” said committee chairman Dr. Liam Schubel. “We are proud to have such outstanding young leaders working diligently to educate others about vertebral subluxation and we look forward to seeing the awardees continue to contribute their time and talent to the IFCO and to the profession.”

Sherman Students Successful

at ChiroGames 2016

In early November, Sherman College students traveled to Cocoa Beach, FL, to participate in the 2016 Chiro Games, where they competed against 13 other chiropractic colleges in various sporting events, including softball, soccer, swimming, basketball and volleyball. The women’s soccer team placed fourth and received medals. In addition, the swim team placed fourth overall and featured two gold medal winners with a total of 15 medals in swimming events.

Health Center Holds Annual

Thanksgiving Food Drive

The Sherman College Health Center hosted a Thanksgiving Food Drive November 15-17. Each patient who donated 12 items received a complimentary visit to the health center. Several hundred food items were donated and the proceeds were shared between the Sherman College Food Pantry and Safe Homes/Rape Crisis Coalition. The food was delivered to each group on Friday, November 16.

Health Center Names Intern of the Month

The Health Center faculty recognizes interns each month who excel in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism and analytical and adjusting technique. The October 2016 Intern of the Month is Tim Hartman of Raleigh, NC. He graduates in March 2017 and plans to open a practice in San Diego, CA.
