Dear Future Ohio State Student,

Greetings from the Office of International Affairs at The Ohio State University! We are looking forward to meeting you this spring, and our International Student and Scholars team has put together some resources to help you prepare for your arrival in Columbus, Ohio. Over the next few weeks, you will receive additional information that will cover 11 important steps to take before and upon arrival at Ohio State. This is the second email out of six that you will receive:

STEP 4: MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT, ON OR OFF CAMPUS HOUSING
Limited on-campus housing will be available for freshmen and upperclassmen as well as transfer students. Move-in day is Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 8 a.m. If you would like to move in early, you may do so on Saturday, January 7, 2017 for a fee of $35.

We strongly encourage students who qualify and want on-campus housing to apply as early as possible and complete a housing contract. The availability of spaces is quite limited, especially single rooms. Be aware that most rooms for new students house more than two people. The cost of housing varies by the type of room and the meal plan chosen.

Before you sign a contract to live on campus, be sure that you read the contract thoroughly and that you want on-campus housing. The housing contract is for the length of the academic year. If you break your contract, you will be assigned a buy-out fee for each semester that is remaining on your contract.
University Housing  can be contacted at their email address, [email protected] and by phone at 614-292-8266.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING

If you are interested in living off-campus, we recommend you start your search with Off-campus and Commuter Student Services. This website maintains an online housing search with information on accommodations both within walking distance and driving distance to The Ohio State University campus.

Off-campus and Commuter Student Services is Ohio State's central resource center for off-campus living. The office assists students when searching for off-campus housing and provides educational information on typical renting requirements, including steps to take prior to signing a lease as well as safety tips. This office also provides an online roommate search, sublet services and hosts Roommate Fairs every semester as well as an annual Housing Fair. In addition, they provide students with free window alarms, among various other resources pertaining to off-campus living.

Student Legal Services (SLS) is a team of legal professionals providing legal services to Ohio State students. Eligible students pay an annual participation fee for the SLS legal services plan. SLS services consist of court representation, personal advising sessions, informational brochures, sample document drafting and a variety of educational programs. SLS's scope of services includes Landlord-Tenant disputes, criminal misdemeanors, consumer transactions, traffic offenses, uncontested domestic matters, simple document drafting and other miscellaneous matters.

Before you sign a lease to live off-campus, you should get your lease reviewed by SLS. Then, if legal issues arise when you're moving and living off-campus, meet with SLS staff to discuss your legal rights and options. Students are strongly urged to pay this annual fee, in order to utilize the great services the Student Legal Services provides.

Off-campus and Commuter Student Services and SLS provide helpful information that is applicable during one's entire off-campus living experience. To reach Off-campus and Commuter Student Services, call 614-292-0100 or email [email protected].

TEMPORARY HOUSING

Students with Ohio State Housing Contracts

University Housing offers "early arrival" housing only to students with signed contracts; students who pursue this option will move directly into their room assignments.  Instructions on how to make a reservation for temporary housing and pay in advance will be emailed to students' OSU email accounts as part of their housing assignment email. Questions can be answered by calling 614-292-8266 or by emailing [email protected]

*Please note that housing is near full capacity and the number of spaces available for students during the break/early move-in is very low.

Students without Ohio State Housing Contracts

On-campus early arrival/temporary housing is not available to students without contracts with University Housing. You may be able to find temporary housing at a local hotel or motel, or through some of the Ohio State's international student organizations. Please refer to Temporary Housing for more information.
STEP 5: MAKE TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENTS
Ohio State's main campus is located less than 10 miles from John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH), and taxi service from the airport to campus is relatively quick and inexpensive. The Office of International Affairs (OIA) will have a limited number of taxi vouchers available at first come, first served basis at OIA's Welcome Booth in the airport when you arrive. Additionally, COTA, the Central Ohio Transit Authority, operates a bus that runs from the airport to campus on select days. For more information and to see if this bus will run on the day you arrive in Ohio, please visit the COTA website.
