School Board adds Trap Team to high school activities
The Carl Junction Board of Education approved the addition of a trap shooting team to the high school activity offerings at their November meeting. Trap Shooting is an immerging activity of the Missouri State High School Activity Association.
"We are always looking for ways to get our students involved in school activities," said Superintendent Phillip Cook. "This is just another avenue to have more students involved."
Jared Richmond and Chelsi Leggett will spend the next year preparing to coach the team.

Living his dream as a U.S. Marine
Elgin Dailey wanted to join the military since the age of five. Shortly after his graduation from Carl Junction High School in 2015, he achieved his dream of becoming a United States Marine.
The first step on his military journey took him to boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, in San Diego, California. Upon graduation from that program, h
e returned home only for a few days before returning for trai
ning. He then was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for Combat Engineer Training, graduating from that program in February 2016.
In March 2016, he left for Okinawa, Japan and his first duty station. His enriching duty in Okinawa has been enjoyable. He has even become certified in scuba diving. His training has taken him to the jungle of Japan and to neighboring South Korea. This proud marine rose to the rank of Lance Corporal in August.

Superintendent
honored
Dr. Phillip Cook, Carl Junction superintendent of schools, was honored as the recipient of the Dr. Al Cade Educational Service Award at the Southwest Educational Center's annual Celebration of Schools.
Cook has worked with the Special Olympics Missouri nonprofit organization in a number of capacities, most recently, as the President of the organization. Under his leadership, SOMO has executed and completed plans to raise over $15 million to construct a "Fitness for Life" facility in Jefferson City, Missouri.
The campus will serve current and future generations of individuals with intellectual disabilities and will be the largest such facility in scope in the United States. It will offer year-round training opportunities for athletes, coaches, and volunteers from throughout Missouri but it doesn't stop there. It will serve as a lifelong community hub and center, and will inspire a new drive in the athletes so that they may be able to continue to develop the physical and social skills they need to be as productive and independent as possible.
Nominees for the Dr. Al Cade Educational Service Award immolate a willing servant, going above and beyond the job to help each and every individual meet their potential.

Scholars Bowl wins 1st place
The scholars bowl team consisting of Zak Brown, Noah Carpenter, Amber Jason, Dayan Reynolds, Sam Sisk, and Conner Wilson competed in their first tournament of the season--the Sarcoxie Scholar Bowl Tournament - November 15. The team was undefeated in three rounds of competition. They were the highest scoring team out of 14 total teams, and won the first place trophy.
Conner Wilson led the top 10 high scoring individuals to win an individual trophy.

Students inspire at art competition
Twenty-two schools recently competed at PSU's High School Art Day. Each school could only bring 10 students and 10 art works to compete in 3 categories.
The Carl Junction Art Department placed in all three categories: Junior Alex Miller won 1st place in 3-D art for her wheel thrown tea set, Senior Jade Walker won 2nd place in 2-D art with her mosaic competing against drawings and paintings, and Junior Joanne Kim won 1st place in Illustration with a color pencil drawing.

Operation Gratitude
Carl Junction students in the Kindergarten and 1st Grade Building donated their left over Halloween candy for the military troops through the USO's Operation Gratitude. The Carl Junction Schools' Wellness Program sponsored the candy drive which collected over 100 pounds of candy. The top three classrooms that collected the most candy received a special gift. Mrs. Schmidt's class collected the most candy for our troops followed by Mrs. Howard's Kindergarten class and Mrs. Pence's 1st Grade class.

Students earn All-District honors
With fifteen band members earning a seat in the Southwest Missouri All-District Honor Band and another eight in the All-District Jazz Band, Carl Junction students will make up the majority of musicians in both honor bands. These students will also be eligible to audition for the All-State Band in December.

Fall Fun night at Early Education
Carl Junction School's Early Education Center hosted a Fall Fun night for families and children who are enrolled in the EEC or the Parents as Teachers programs.
Preschoolers and toddlers enjoyed playing with pumpkin play-doh, constructing an autumn wreath, and digging in a corn tub, among many other fine-motor skill building activities. They also enjoyed a healthy snack that they were able to prepare themselves.
Parents as Teachers is a free and voluntary service offering early literacy and Kindergarten readiness assistance. Trained Parent Educators will build relationships and offer tips to parents of any child, age birth to Kindergarten, who reside within the school district of Carl Junction. Stinnett & Boutwell sign letters of intent
Two Carl Junction athletes have decided to continue their sports at the next level by signing National Letters of Intent. Ashton Boutwell will continue to play softball at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and Kenzie Stinnett will advance her volleyball skills at the University of Arkansas.
