"To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries." ~A.C. Grayling

"A library takes the gift of reading one step further by offering personalized learning opportunities second to none, a powerful antidote to the isolation of the Web." ~Julie Andrews

"A capacity and taste for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others." ~Abraham Lincoln
Art Gallery

This month's featured artist is Maya Watt and Katie Melly.
According to Maya, art has always been a fundamental part of her childhood. When she was 9 years old, she moved from England to Somers, and art definitely helped her make new friends. She remembers how kind her 4th grade art teacher was, and her willingness to help Maya in her drawings. Today she is a senior at Somers High School. In addition to drawing and painting, she enjoys being a part of her school's track team and science research team.

Katie Melly is a current 12th grade student who is the treasurer of the National art Honor Society at Somers High school. Throughout high school, she has developed a passion for many mediums in art from painting to ceramics. She has developed a portfolio and a body of work from her high school classes that shows her creative side and interests. Katie hopes to continue with art out of high school because it plays such a strong role in her life.

If you are interested in displaying your art, please email somersartgallery@wls

The Friends of the Somers Library and the Somers Library Foundation have been instrumental in  enabling the Library to fullfill our mission.  However, they could not do their work without the support of the community.  They would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous support over this year.

Thank you from The Friends of the Library
As 2016 draws to a close, the Friends would like to thank all the patrons who have donated to provide the programs that the whole community enjoys at the library.  Whether large or small, your contributions add up to an annual budget that allows our staff to choose interesting, educational, entertaining, challenging, and relevant programs for children, teens and adults.

Thanks also to our wonderful volunteers, who have helped to sell books, greet at programs, and much more.  Supporting our library is a community effort that we in Somers are privileged to enjoy.

Our annual appeal begins again in January 2017 - we hope you will support The Friends in our ongoing efforts.  ~Susan Berkow, President

Warm wishes from the Somers Library Foundation for happy and healthy holidays!
We are grateful to our generous supporters who have helped the Foundation build financial support for the Library. Thanks to the success of our annual fundraisers, the Spring Luncheon and the 5K Trail Race, we were able to purchase acoustic panels for the Program Room that improve sound quality and prevent noise from spreading to other areas. Look for additional enhancements to the Library next year. Thanks, too, to the Lions Club for its generous donation used to purchase a standalone card-catalog kiosk, which freed up much-needed computer space for student clubs and patrons. And join us in applauding our excellent Library staff that provides a vital educational and cultural resource for our community.

Your support for our Library is more crucial today than ever. Help us continue our advocacy work by donating to the Foundation. Or consider supporting us by doing your online holiday shopping at AmazonSmile ( https://smile.amazon.com ). Choose the Somers Library Foundation as your charitable organization, and Amazon will donate a small portion of your purchase amount to the Foundation. Thank you!

Holiday Concert:

On Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 2PM, the Friends of the Somers Library will present a Holiday Concert featuring THE GOLDEN APPLE CHORUS.

In the spirit of the holidays, please bring one non-perishable food item for donation to the Somers Food Pantry. The concert is free and open to the public, but seating is limited, so first come is first served.

Refreshments will be served!
Please help us make the holidays brighter for the folks at the Somers Manor Nursing Home this month!  Drop in to the library and make a holiday card!  We will have all the supplies needed to create a little token of cheer and good will.  Thank you!
The Somers Library would like to thank the participants of the Teen 3D Modeling Workshop held at the Somers Library during the early fall. This workshop series offered teens in grades 6th and up an opportunity to develop a 3D model of our library in order to assist our library leaders to get a better visual of future plans. Collaborating with Digital Arts Experience, Inc. of White Plains, students participated in a series of 5 workshops and a presentation meeting with the library board of trustees. This program was made possible in part with funds from Westchester Library System's
Mini-Grant Initiative supported by Entergy and Con Edison and the Friends of the Somers Library.
