Please don't forget to share your thanks with a donation to our food and toy drives and to join me in welcoming local schoolchildren to our Unity Tree celebration on December 5.

Dr. Donald Light Publishes Groundbreaking Article on Cervical Cancer Vaccination

Dr. Donald Light, professor, Psychiatry, recently published an article in the online journal Vaccine, which sheds light on the true cost of manufacturing and supplying human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines to developing countries. The research suggests that pharmaceutical companies are overestimating the cost of the HPV vaccine. Dr. Light, who, along with researchers from Princeton University and Yale School of Medicine, concludes that setting lower vaccine prices "...is an important moral commitment by the companies to reduce global health inequities by preventing cancer and deaths in lower income countries." The article has major implications for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance that negotiates low prices for vaccines and helps the world's poorest countries immunize their children. Approximately 85 percent of the more than 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer, and more than 90 percent of the deaths caused by the disease each year, occur in lower- and middle-income countries.
