FROM ROB HEREFORD
2017 SPIRIT OF LAGUNA JOGATHON & FESTIVAL
Three cheers for our Parents’ Auxiliary Event Chairs Dawn O’Donnell and Amanda Whalen and our team of dedicated volunteers who collaborated with teachers and students to create the 2017 SPIRIT OF LAGUNA  –  JOGATHON & FESTIVAL.

The event showcased many of the areas that make Laguna unique. Not only did our students rule on the field, running over 4,700 laps and raising over $22,000 in lap sponsorships, they rocked it on stage, in their club booths, at the art walk, and in their various academic showcases.
The event also kicked off the 2017/18 Laguna Fund. Our appreciation to the Laguna Fund Chairs, Brandi Fraser and Julia Rodgers, and their team of Class Captains whose efforts have already helped us to raise over $300,000.

Whether you were cheering on the runners, mingling around the food trucks, or learning about the various clubs on campus, we thank you for your participation and hope you felt the true spirit of our community!

OWLS SOAR IN ATHLETICS
Excerpts from Athletic Round Table Luncheon Report
By Barry Punzal, Noozhawk Sports

TENNIS
The Owls have won nine in a row and are headed to the CIF playoffs for the first time in Rob Cowell’s four years as coach.

“We’re looking forward to our first playoff experience to see how far we can get,” he said.

Cowell introduced sophomore No. 1 singles player Katherine Monroy ’20  and Lily Holbrook ’21 , the anchor for the No. 3 doubles team.

FOOTBALL
Coach Shane Lopes raved about the play and improvement of first-year football players Sam Stegall ’19 and Oscar Houglet ’22 .

The had good games in the Owls’ 78-12 win over Milken Community in their homecoming game last Friday.

“Last week, they earned their stripes as football players,” he said. “Those moments are highlights for me as a coach – more than most of the touchdowns that were scored.”

Laguna Blanca, which has a bye this week, went 5-2 playing a freelance regular-season schedule. The Owls will learn Friday if they receive an at-large bid to the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs for 8-man football. The pairings will be announced on Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY
The Owls are in good shape to qualify their girls team for the CIF Prelims while the boys need to finish ahead of Besant Hill in next week’s Condor League finals to have a shot.

Coach David Silverander brought No. 1 runner Aura Carlson ’18 of the girls’ team and four-year veteran Clay Rodgers ’18 of the boys’ squad to the luncheon.

VOLLEYBALL
Laguna Blanca honored one of the winningest senior classes in the history of the school's girls volleyball program and then went out and swept Providence in the final regular season match of the season on Tuesday, October 24.

The Owls won 25-13, 25-7, 25-9 to wrap up the regular season at 25-3.

"It was a nice night honoring our eight seniors who have worked so hard for our program," assistant coach Kat Niksto said. " Kelly Bickett '18 , Caylin Zimmerman '18 , Julia Fay '18 , Laurel Kujan '18 , Sophia Fay '18 , Kendall White '18 , Kathryn Norris '18 , and Abby Corpuz '18 have done such a good job of representing the Laguna Blanca student athlete during their volleyball careers. We are looking forward to the challenge of the upcoming playoffs."

CHALLENGE SUCCESS BOOK CLUB FOR PARENTS
Failure can be a valuable learning experience, but sometimes it’s difficult—and even a little scary—to give kids room to grow from their mistakes.

The Laguna parent community is invited to join us for the first meeting of the Challenge Success Parent Book Club , where we’ll discuss The Gift of Failure . In this book, teacher and parent Jessica Lahey describes how she learned to “let go” when she realized that her overprotective parenting style was preventing her kids from learning essential life skills. Lahey provides tips and discussion for parents of kids of all ages and covers a variety of topics ranging from household chores to schoolwork.

Head of Laguna's Challenge Success Program Dr. Kathy Piller will lead our discussion, focusing on Middle and Upper School students. Interested Lower School parents are welcome to attend! The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 15 from 6:30-7:30PM in the Isham Library on the Hope Ranch campus.

RSVP to Kathy Piller who will provide a reading guide to participants.
