Top 5: How You're Preparing Our Kids for College and Career
College and Career Readiness Month is coming to an end, and our educators shared how they're doing the important work of preparing our kids for their futures. The Top 5 responses are below; congratulations to Hilary O'Kelly and Michele Stobbe at CEC Early College, our giveaway prize winners!
5. "To prepare
all
students for college and career, ACEConnect has partnered with colleges and universities to provide the Transition to Higher Education Course for 11th- and 12th-grade students with disabilities. The course helps our students with disabilities know what to expect when they have an IEP Transition Plan goal to enroll in a two-year, four-year or technical-college certificate program after high school."

4. "Our college transitions counselor, Sarah Thomas, is working with 41 graduates from the class of 2017 who are attending college. She has helped students secure additional financial aid, met with college advisers to get students into the right classes and met individually with students to navigate life situations. Without Sarah, seven students have already said that they would not still be in college."

3. "We have a college door-decorating contest that involves our students and faculty working collaboratively to decorate the best college-themed door. Teachers are able to show their pride in their alma maters; students learn something new about their teachers and discover new postsecondary institutions; and the project helps expand student creativity in our arts-integrated middle and high schools."

2. "We launched our Career Cafe series, bringing in speakers from the community to talk about their career paths. We're doing career exploration lessons in the elementary and middle school, and we're signing up for college trips that best fit the career interests of our students."

It's Not Spam: Verify or Update Your Personal Information

Wednesday, Nov. 1, you will receive an email from
Human Resources that will contain the demographic information that DPS has on file for you, including your address, email address, phone number, emergency contact, race, and ethnicity, as well as information on whether you have elected electronic delivery of your W2 and 1095-C tax forms. This email is not spam or a phishing attempt and there is action required.

When you receive the email on Nov. 1, take a moment to review the personal demographic information that DPS has on file for you. Instructions will be provided for how to update any out-of-date information in Infor HR. Having up-to-date information on file allows DPS to communicate with you and to generate reports required by federal law.

Find Out How the World Supports College and Career Readiness
October is
College and Career Readiness Month, and we hope you've been talking to our students about the importance of making plans for their futures. All DPS educators are invited to continue the conversation with panelists from around the world during the
Building Pipelines of Success: Ensuring Students are College and Career Ready public forum.
Hosted by DPS, the Asia Society and the University of Colorado Denver, this panel will explore how school districts and communities around the world are developing multiple, versatile pathways for young people to allow them flexible opportunities for work and lifelong learning. Panelists (including
Superintendent Tom Boasberg) will highlight successes and raise challenges for further exploration. The forum will be held from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 8 at the University of Colorado Denver.

Earn a $125 Referral Bonus for Referring a Paraprofessional
Schools have an urgent need for Early Childhood Education (ECE), English Language Acquisition (ELA) and Special Education (SPED) paraprofessionals. To help our schools, DPS has launched an employee referral bonus program. Any current DPS employee can earn a
$125 referral bonus
for each new referral who applies and is hired into a school-based part-time or full-time ELA, ECE or SPED paraprofessional role before Jan. 31. In order to receive the bonus, the referral must be hired before Jan. 31 and remain in her/his position for at least one full month. The employee who referred the new hire must also be active with DPS at the time of payout in March. For information about referring qualified applicants and more, click here.

Patti Weiner, second-grade teacher at
Sabin World School, lives our Shared Core Value of Students First. As a proud DPS parent, I have had difficulties with teachers dealing with my son. We could not find a solution to make him want to learn.
Since the start of this school year, I have seen my son's interest in school completely change. He is becoming a better reader and his attitude is changing from 'I don't want to' to 'Show me how and see how far I can go.' I began to wonder what created this sudden change in my son. It was Ms. Weiner! She changed his life by putting Students First and taking that extra step to get to know my son.
