A Message from the Superintendent
|
Each week as I prepare Email Express, I am always humbled by the wide range of activities in which your children excel. We have an artist who received distinction from the College Board, an Eagle Scout who parlayed his scout project into a Senior project focused on suicide prevention, a youth equestrian team who is the current Reserve National Champion in the Youth Intermediate Division, and a volunteer experience in the Buddy League. In the more traditional areas, our orchestra students made an exemplary showing in the Regional Auditions, our volleyball team is the undefeated District 15-5A champions, our team tennis kids have advanced to the Regional semi-finals with a thrilling win (10-9) over Frisco Heritage, and finally our Boys' Cross Country Team won the Regional meet in a decisive fashion. It is definitely a good time to be in Lovejoy!

LHS Graduate Earns
College Board Distinction in AP Studio Drawing
|
Hannah Lawson, Class of 2017
Hannah Lawson, 2017 Lovejoy Graduate and AP Studio Drawing Student, had her work selected by the College Board as the 2017 Studio Art Drawing Complete Portfolio example for AP Studio students world-wide. The College Board selects only 1 full portfolio for each branch of AP Studio Art (2D, 3D, and Drawing) per year as an exemplary body of work to inspire and guide students taking on the rigor of the AP Portfolio. Being selected as the single example of each portfolio is the highest honor; literally setting the standard of excellence amongst 20,000 portfolios and almost 500,000 pieces of work.
As a further accolade, the College Board also selected one of Hannah's mixed media pieces to be exhibited as part of the 17-18 AP Studio Art Exhibit, which showcases work that "exemplifies the extremely high level of rigor, commitment, and accomplishment that AP Studio Art students can achieve." These works are accompanied by student/teacher statements in an online gallery, and also will be displayed at Princeton and the AP conference in Houston. Both of these incredible honors speak volumes about the work ethic, care, and thought Hannah poured into her work as part of AP Studio.

Bradley Davis Earns Highest Award in Scouting
Last year Bradley Davis, a current Senior at Lovejoy High School, organized a 5K run, Running Over Depression, for his Eagle Scout project. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in April. Congratulations to Bradley on this tremendous accomplishment.
 Experiencing great success with the first run, Bradley recruited two fellow Seniors, James Ayers and Jonah Barton, to organize the second annual Running Over Depression for their Senior projects. See the Upcoming Events section below for additional information and a link to register.

USEDA Equestrian Drill Team
The Woodhaven Wranglers Youth Equestrian Drill team is comprised of many Lovejoy students, including Sierra Stammen (12th), Casey Perkins (11th), Taylor Braun (10th), Sarah Muckelroy (7th), and Clementine Brown (7th). These young ladies had an outstanding showing at the Super Ride competition this summer, as they won the National Championship in the following 5 categories: Rodeo, Youth Select, Youth Theme, Youth Advanced, and Youth Novice. In addition, they are the Reserve National Champions in the Youth Intermediate division. The girls are looking forward to presenting the flags at the Lovejoy football game on Friday.

Lovejoy High School Freshman Stone Scalf Participates in the Buddy League
A message from Stone Scalf:
 "On Saturday, October 21st, I was introduced to a service organization called the Buddy League. It pairs able-bodied teammates with a special-needs teammate. Together, these athletes play in baseball tournaments in the fall and in the spring. I was paired with a different teammate each game, and I was a part of their experiences throughout the game, whether it was helping them hold a bat, swing, run the bases, or field balls. The Buddy League was a great experience for me, and during the entire day the players' faces lit up with excitement, whether it be hitting or fielding, or just talking to a buddy in the field. However, the Buddy League doesn't have enough volunteers to help out for this weekend's tournament, and I think it would be a really good idea to invite students to come help volunteer on the 28th. This would be a great experience for a lot of the students to help kids who don't necessarily have the capability to play the game by themselves.
For the fall season, the Buddy League has one more tournament scheduled on October 28th. Games start at 9:00 AM and are located at Bradfield Park, 1220 Castle Drive, Garland, Texas, 75040. Games will begin again in the spring.

A Message from the
Deputy Superintendent

GPA and Class Rank
 Dear Lovejoy Community:
I hope this finds you enjoying the cooler weather as we approach the end of October. For the last several weeks, I have described some of the practices for grading and reporting grades which we have chosen in Lovejoy. Based on this information, a parent asked me about the historical patterns and trends for a student to earn different rankings at Lovejoy High School. We have reviewed the data for the last three graduating classes, and have identified the GPA which qualified a student to be ranked in the top 10% and the top 25%.
As a reminder, we have a unique component of our high school GPA calculation and ranking policy: Students must earn 26 credits for graduation. In Lovejoy, students have 32 credit opportunities, because students have an 8 period day for the four years of high school. Our ranking policy allows students to "exempt" from their GPA calculation up to 8 semesters of the credits earned which are not needed for graduation. For example, students could exempt AP Calculus because only Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II, and an advanced fourth math credit such as pre-calculus comprise the math credits needed for graduation. AP Calculus would be beyond the required graduation credit courses and could be taken - and exempted - if our ranking program determined that the student's GPA would be higher by excluding the AP Calculus grade.
For the last three graduating classes, a student who earned a 3.71 - 3.79 GPA was ranked in the top 25% of the class. Students who were ranked in the top 10% of the graduating class had a GPA of 3.93 - 4.04. The ranking GPAs are calculated on the weighted scale, with 5.0 being the top of the GPA scale.
I hope this GPA information is helpful and provides perspective about the GPA required to be in the top quarter or top 10% in Lovejoy. I have heard comments over the years that students must have a GPA of 4.5 or higher to be in the top 10%, but as you can see, the data does not support this.
Our goal remains the same in regard to a class ranking system, which is to ensure our graduates are viewed as positively as possible in the college admissions process, while ensuring a GPA is a reflection of the rigor of courses taken and the grades earned in high school.
To continue to learn about college admissions and the various perspectives regarding GPA and class rank, I invite you to attend the College Admissions Panel, which has been scheduled for next Monday, October 30th, at Lovejoy High School at 6:30 PM in the Main Gym.

Lovejoy Girls Basketball
On October 28th, the girls basketball team will travel to the American Airlines Center to kick off the season against Mansfield High School. Scrimmage times are as follows: JV Red, 1:15 PM; JV Black, 2:05 PM; Varsity, 2:55 PM.
Last season, the Lady Leopards went 25-9 and made it to the Area round of the state playoffs. With 10 returners and the addition of some young talent, the Lady Leopards are ready to make even more noise in the 2017-2018 season. We hope to see you at the games.

Lovejoy Cross Country
Boys Cross Country
The Lovejoy Boys Cross Country team won the Region II 5A Cross Country Championship and re-claimed their Regional Title from 2016. This marks the first time in program history for the boys' team to win back-to-back Regional Championships. In addition, this is the third Regional Championship for the boys' team in program history (2010, 2016, and 2017), and the 10th consecutive year for the boys' team to qualify for the state meet (2008-2017). The boys' team scored 64 points, with runner up Frisco Wakeland (#7 5A ranked team) scoring 115. Dallas Conrad placed 3rd with 123 points, and Prosper finished 4th with 151 points.
Brady Laboret
led the way for the boys' team with a 5th overall finish in 16:13. William Muirhead finished 12th overall in 16:30. Brady's and Will's performances also earned them All-Region Team honors from the CCCAT. Finishing third for the boys' team was Bradley Davis (18th - 16:35). The team's number four and five runners were Ryan Spruell (21st - 16:46) and Brett Pedersen (22nd - 16:47). Rounding out the boys' team were Ryan Brands (24th - 16:50) and Whitson Bedell (39th - 17:16).
The boys' team will compete at the UIL 5A State Cross Country Championship in Round Rock, Texas, on Saturday, November 4th.
Girls Cross Country
The Lovejoy Girls Cross Country team finished 9th overall out of 23 teams. Carson Hockersmith led the way for the girls' team finishing 26th overall with a time of 20:09. Amelia Carothers finished 51st overall with a time of 21:01.03, and Zoe Bessa finished 53rd with a time of 21:01.80. Rounding out the girls team were Avery Silliman (58th - 21:11), Emily Gueller (62nd - 21:16), Andee Richardson (69th - 21:26), and Sofia Estes (76th - 21:39).
The girls' team will complete next at the Nike South Regional Championship in The Woodlands, Texas, on Saturday, November 18th.

The Varsity Lovejoy Leopards spoiled Wylie East's Homecoming this past Friday, 28-21. Lovejoy outscored the Pirates 22-14 in the second half to secure the win. The Leopards are now 2-2 in District 15-5A, and will play North Forney on Friday night in the annual "Pink Out" game honoring breast cancer awareness. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM at Leopard Stadium.
On Thursday night, the Leopard JV team dominated Wylie East at Leopard Stadium. The Leopards were able to strike early, jumping out 7-0 after the 1st drive. Using big plays through the air and a very steady run game, the Leopards were able to control the game offensively for most of the night.
Also on Thursday night, the Freshman Leopards took down Wylie East 49-27 at Wylie East High School. After one quarter of action, they were down 7-0 but soon raced out to a 28-14 halftime lead. The second quarter dominance continued into the second half as the Leopards cruised down the stretch. The win brings their season record to 5-2, and 3-1 in district play.

Lovejoy Golf
Leopard Golf is hosting the Fall Classic this Thursday, October 26th, at Heritage Ranch. The Varsity 1, Varsity 2, and JV 1 boys will compete along with the girls Varsity team. The field is expected to include 60 players representing seven schools.

Lovejoy Swimming
Varsity Swimming faced off Tuesday night against district rivals Highland Park. Despite the Leopards posting 13 lifetime best performances at the meet, they were defeated. The Lady Leopards' record fell to 2-3, losing 147-33, and the boys' record fell to 0-5, losing to the defending state champs 123-52.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Lovejoy Tennis team is on a 7 game winning streak, and advanced to the Regional Quarter-Finals after defeating Greenville 10-0 in their Bi-District match and Frisco Heritage 10-7 in Area.
The Leopards take on Frisco Independence at Allen High School this coming Tuesday at 4:00 PM.

Lovejoy Volleyball
Last night, the Lovejoy Leopard Volleyball team honored Seniors Annabelle Archer, Shanel Bramschreiber, Lexie Parks, Rachel Langs, and Allie Moger at their final home game of the season. The Leopards finished district 14-0.
Last Tuesday night, the Leopards battled it out against Highland Park, with a 4 set win. A win over Wylie East Friday night and last night's 25-6, 25-4, 25-7 win over West Mesquite confirmed Lovejoy as the undefeated District Champions.
It was a fantastic district campaign for all teams as they finished district play in dominating fashion with undefeated records. Lovejoy Volleyball players at all levels had an exceptional season with tons of success. The future is bright.
Post Season
The Leopards will play Friday night at home against highly-ranked 6A opponent Coppell High School. This post season warm-up match will begin at 5:30 PM in the Lovejoy High School gym.
Playoffs begin next Monday against Longview Pine Tree. The teams will meet at Mineola High School for a 5:30 PM game.

We hope you will take time to watch the Lovejoy Varsity cheerleaders' video and be ready to cheer our Leopards to victory at the game on Friday night. Kick-off for the Pink Out game against North Forney is 7:30 PM.

LHS Band
The LHS Band performed Saturday at the Region 25 UIL Marching contest in Wylie. The band was given a unanimous first division rating from all three judges, and was moved on to the Area level competition. Some comments on the critique sheets from the three judges included praise for "high demand" and "great design of the show". Other notable quotes were: "Great players", "Great brass and woodwind sounds", and 'Fantastic Band".
The band performs next at Area this Saturday, October 28th, at 11:00 AM at the Little Elm Athletic Complex located at 1151 East Eldorado Parkway, Little Elm, Texas, 75068. Please come out and let us hear you in the stands.

LHS Orchestra
This past weekend, the orchestra department competed in the All Region Orchestra. This is an individual competition where students are competing for a spot in an "All Star" Orchestra. The competition included orchestra students from Lovejoy, Allen, Rockwall, Sherman, and McKinney. Over 700 students auditioned for a spot. PTA Reflections: Within Reach
 The National PTA Reflections program encourages students of all ages and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Through the program, National PTA, Lovejoy Local and Council PTAs, and PTAs across the country urge students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works. This year's contest theme is "Within Reach". We hope all Leopards will submit an entry in one or more of the following categories: Dance Choreography, Literature, Film Production, Photography, Visual Arts, and Music Composition - reflecting on the specific theme.
There is a special artist division option for students with disabilities to ensure all students have the opportunity to participate in the program. Students are recognized each year for their artistic ingenuity to bring the theme to life in a way which is personal and meaningful. For rules and entry forms,

Gold Award: First Aid Donations for ACO
A Message from Neha Kapur
"My name is Neha Kapur. I am a senior at Lovejoy High School and an ambassador in Girl Scouts. I am working on my Gold Award, which is the highest honor in Girl scouts.
For my service project, No Fear First Aid Is Here, I am creating awareness among kids regarding the importance of first aid in their lives. Knowing what to do when you or someone else is hurt can be very valuable information. I am going to have workshops for children to teach them about first aid, and also to let them practice skills. I feel every child should have at least a basic knowledge of First-Aid.
Additionally, I am holding donation drives at all Lovejoy schools to create first aid kits to donate to Allen Community Outreach (ACO). Items requested for donation are band aids, antiseptic wipes, crepe bandages, cotton balls, gloves, gauze, and any other supplies you would typically find in a first aid kit. All donations are appreciated and will be accepted through Friday, October 27th.

Eagle Project: Hurricane Harvey Relief
A Message from Hunter Kight
 "My name is Hunter Kight, I am an 8th grader at Willow Springs, and I've just started my eagle project. I have chosen to help the Hurricane Harvey victims for my project. Many of the victims did not have flood insurance, and this looks to be the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history. The clean-up and rebuild effort will take more than a year. There is a time during disasters like this that charities experience donor fatigue. This is where donations drop to their lowest. Through my project, I am trying to reduce donor fatigue by collecting basic essential items. I have partnered with the Salvation Army to collect supplies like canned goods, baby food/formula, hygiene items, diapers, and cases of water. Large donation boxes are located at each school to collect these items. I will leave these boxes out until November 3, 2017. Please consider supporting this effort by filling the boxes and helping the victims."

Lovejoy ISD Pre-Kindergarten
Space Available
Our district has offered a Pre-K program as a part of our employee daycare program for the past 11 years. On the suggestion of parents, we decided to expand that program and offer a tuition-based program open to our community. We currently have two Pre-K classrooms open at Puster Elementary. This program offers enhancements in music, fitness, art, library, science, technology, engineering, and math. We are enthusiastic about providing a Lovejoy education for community members looking for a rich learning experience which will provide a firm foundation for kindergarten and beyond. The first week of school we received an email from a parent with a child in the program and this is what she said:
"My daughter loves her new school and runs to get dressed every morning (used to throw a fit). Her teachers are great."

The Lovejoy Running Club
The Lovejoy Running Club will be meeting every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. LHS Band UIL Area Marching Contest: October 28
The LHS Band will compete at the UIL Area Marching Contest on Saturday, October 28th. The band will perform at 11:00 AM at the Little Elm Sports Complex. The results will be announced at 4:45 PM, and finals will follow for those bands advancing to State. The LHS Band has been preparing the UIL Show "Metalmorphosis 2017" since August. This year, the 5A bands will have their rotation to compete for state. We hope to see our Lovejoy Fans in Wylie supporting our Marching Leopards.

College Admission and GPA/Rank Forum:
October 30
Unequivocally, our goal is to implement the best system possible which will support our students in their quest for admittance to the college/university of his/her choosing. The idea of ranking or not ranking our graduates has been a discussion item for several years. Under Texas law, we are required to rank the Top 10%, but beyond that, it is a local district decision. We have done a thorough review of this issue at least twice in the past, and have not found a compelling reason to drop the ranking policy beyond the Top 10%. Our college counselors have put together a panel of college/university admissions professionals to provide additional information for our community. Please plan to join us on October 30th from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the LHS gym. Currently, we have commitments from staff at these institutions:

Mini Madagascar Live! VIP Party: November 2
Are you a VIP? Join us for a Mini Madagascar Live! VIP Party on Thursday, November 2nd, at 6:15 PM. November 2nd is opening night of the Willow Springs Middle School musical, Madagascar Live!. The animals are escaping from the Central Park Zoo, and you are invited to experience it firsthand. Aim for Success Parent Presentation: November 1
Aim For Success is presenting information to Lovejoy High School students on November 7th. The topic is "Focus on Success," and students will hear about technology, sexting, pornography, and healthy relationships on that day. The 9th and 10th grade rotation will be held from 10:00 AM - 11:25 AM, and the 11th and 12th grade rotation will be held from 1:30 PM - 2:23 PM.

Issues Affecting Today's Teens and How You Can Help
We all want to keep our teens safe. Join Vanita Halliburton and Dr. Ray Levy on Wednesday, November 8th at 11:30 AM in the Lovejoy ISD Administration Building Board Room to learn how to:
- Recognize signs of distress in teens
- Promote brain health
- Foster resiliency and positive coping skills
- Know the warning signs of suicidal behavior
- Find help for a struggling teen

Vanita Halliburton is president of the Grant Halliburton Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness and understanding of adolescent mental health and suicide prevention. She speaks from the heart about her son's battle with depression and bipolar disorder and his suicide at the age of 19.
Ray Levy, Ph.D., LSSP is in private practice in Dallas and works extensively with high risk children, children with ADHD and strong-willed behaviors. He has appeared on numerous radio and television shows discussing various psychological issues. Dr. Levy travels throughout the country giving workshops and talks on therapy, and child and adolescent issues.

Running Over Depression 5K and 1K Fun Run: November 11
 Bradley Davis, James Ayers, and Jonah Barton are organizing the second annual Running Over Depression 5K and 1K event for their Senior Projects. Last year, this event had over 360 participants, and raised over $8,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). This year, the organizers are looking forward to increasing the number of participants and involvement from the Lovejoy Community. The event will be held on Saturday, November 11th. The entry fees are $20 for the 1K and $30 for the 5K, with all proceeds donated to the AFSP. You may register by

Girls Lacrosse Try-It Clinic: November 11
Lovejoy Lacrosse will host a free try-it clinic and introduction to lacrosse for all Lovejoy girls in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. The clinic will be held on Saturday, November 11th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Willow Springs Middle School Football Field. No lacrosse experience is necessary and there is no need to register. This will be a fun, no pressure environment where Lovejoy girls can try lacrosse, and parents can learn about the Lovejoy Lady Leopards Lacrosse program. Please
