A Few Reminders for the End of the Year!

Dear VOS Members,

I think we should all take a moment to be grateful for the life choices that led us towards veterinary orthopedics and away from dealing with dogs vomiting up bits of colorful tinfoil that smell vaguely of chocolate mint. I certainly am. I just want to remind you of a few things yet to do this year amidst the holiday madness:
  • Snowbird is looking to be amazing this year. Conference dates are March 11-18, 2017. Make sure you get your time off requests in.

  • Early bird registration for the annual conference ends December 18th. Click here to register online at the VOS Store.

  • All your travel needs can be met easily and conveniently by visiting the VOS Snowbird travel website or contacting Penny Smith at [email protected].

  • Dr. Katja LinCheck out the preliminary VOS 2017 Conference Program now posted on our website.

  • Start getting into shape to hit the slopes! The ski/snowboard race is on, and this year we are going to add an extra layer of competition by adding the mentor/resident race.
So enjoy the rest of the year, eat lots, and spend a little extra time with family and friends. Happy Holidays from all of us at VOS!

SILENT AUCTION DONATIONS NEEDED!
Auction graphic by John Chandler
Director, VOS Education Foundation

The VOS Educational Foundation Night will include a silent auction again this year. The silent auction is the primary fundraiser for the VOS Educational Foundation. Money raised by the silent auction helps fund VOS travel fellowships and research awards. Over the past two years, the silent auction has been extremely successful, and the VOSEF thanks everyone that has participated.

We are currently looking for donations from the VOS membership and sponsor companies for the silent auction. Many of the past auctioned items have been donated by VOS members and have included Apple products and vacation home stays.

If you would like to donate to the silent auction, please contact VOSEF Director John Chandler ( [email protected]) or Maralyn Probst ( [email protected]). Be sure to mark Wednesday, March 15 on your calendar, and attend Foundation Night!
WHAT'S PLANNED FOR THE 2017 CONFERENCE?
Registration is now open for the 44th annual VOS conference in Snowbird, Utah, March 11 to March 18, 2017. Those dates are later than usual, but don't worry about the snow. Snowbird gets lake effect snow from the Great Salt Lake, and hardcore skiers ski into July, sometimes.

Snowbird

Snowbird, Utah is a fantastic location for the VOS conference. With 169 runs spanning over 2,500 acres, it is a winter paradise. It is well known for its fresh supply of Utah powder and with the recent upgrades to the chalets and RFID ticketing system, everything is in place for a smooth and enjoyable week of skiing and snowboarding. There are a variety of activities off the mountain as well, such as snowmobiling, fly fishing, shopping and a world class spa.

Snowbird is near the Salt Lake City, Utah airport. Book your lodging by starting at the 2017 Conference page on the VOS website, which gives you an extra registration discount and prevents VOS from incurring extra charges for conference space. If you have questions about lodging or travel, please contact our travel agent Penny Smith at [email protected].

James Stannard, MD
We have an exciting conference planned. James Stannard, MD, is the
Jacques Jenny Lecturer. Dr. Stannard is chair of orthopedic surgery and J. Vernon Luck Sr. Distinguished Professor in Orthopaedic surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He also serves as medical director of the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, the region's most comprehensive orthopedic surgery center. Dr. Stannard has served as a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Board of Directors and is a trustee of the AO Foundation. He has been a visiting professor and invited lecturer at universities throughout the world. In 2008, his book Surgical Treatment of Orthopaedic Trauma received the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Award for Excellence in clinical medicine from the Association of American Publishers. Dr. Stannard also serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Knee Surgery and is a retired officer from the 82nd Airborne Division.

VOS preliminary conference programOur preliminary VOS 2017 Conference Program has just been released! We are still making some minor changes to the program, so please check our website in a week or two for the final version.

We will repeat the popular, expanded, equine program this year with two full days of speakers and abstracts geared towards equine locomotion, gait analysis and orthopedics, fracture repair and complications that will run parallel to the small animal lectures. Confirmed speakers include sports medicine and equine locomotion expert Dr. Hilary Clayton and orthopedic experts Dr. Alan Nixon and Dr. Jeffrey Watkins. Topics to be covered will include lameness biomechanics, rehabilitation strategies for the axial skeleton, rider effect during lameness examination, orthopedic surgery and trauma, regenerative medicine, fracture repair and complications.

We will be running panel discussions on these areas in addition to keynote presentations and scientific abstracts, so there will be plenty of time for small group discussion with key opinion leaders.

There will be a special panel on complications and corrections consisting of our colleagues and mentors to remind us that to be a surgeon is to be human.

Foundation Night will be Wednesday evening in conjunction with the poster session. This event brings recognition to the VOS Foundation and is the Foundation's primary fund raiser. This year we will continue the silent auction, and will again have many wonderful items ranging from Apple products to surgical equipment to beach house stays. The money raised goes toward funding VOS travel fellowships and research awards. The poster session, dinner, drinks, and the silent auction will be followed by a performance by the hilarious and inspiring comedian Derrick Tennant.

This year's kids' Foundation Night party, for ages 3 and up, is hosted by VOS, has a circus theme and will be professionally run by Camp Snowbird. Let VOS entertain the little ones while you visit the poster session, catch up with old friends and enjoy the comedian's performance.

DON'T MISS THE FUN AT THE ANNUAL VOS SKI RACE!
by Dick Lau
Assistant Director, VOS Education Foundation

The ski race has been a part of VOS since the society's beginning. It was originally just a fun race with makeshift obstacles like hay bales and crossed slalom poles. The winners won the "Acetabular Cup." Later, as resorts worried more about accident liabilities, it became a NASTAR race. The original purpose was to encourage family fun together and for members and families to meet informally at the start, finish and picnic. All ages racing together, Moms and Dads racing sons and daughters, grandparents racing grandchildren, and parents proud of their very fast teenage racers add to the fun. More recently the income from the race has helped fund awards from the VOS Education Foundation. An important, fun, component was added during the world congress as international teams competed as well as individuals. Where else can you race against a tall guy in pig costume, or a banana?

In this year's ski race, we will add an additional category called "Mentor vs. Resident." Challenge a mentor (or another colleague) on the slopes like he or she challenges you in the OR and win some serious bragging rights.

I personally look forward to the race each year, hoping to race at least until I'm 90, and no, that is not next year.

PURINA COLLABORATES WITH SPORTS MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION VETERINARIANS TO HELP CANINE ATHLETES
Purina Canine Sports Medicine Symposium Proceedings cover Thirty top sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarians from across the country came together for the Purina Canine Sports Medicine Symposium, held September 30-October 1 at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri.

The goal of the symposium was to share ideas, present the latest research, and brainstorm innovative ways to work together. The group also shared ideas with Purina veterinarian and research scientists, and took part in panel discussions with competitors of the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge National Finals and AKC Master National Retriever event, which coincided with the symposium. They offered competitors tips on nutrition, training and conditioning, and rehabbing from injuries.

Event coordinator RuthAnn Lobos, DVM, CCRT, Purina Senior Veterinary Communications Manager, says, "Purina has been a proud partner of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation since its inception. It's exciting to witness new relationships being formed as a result of the symposium, with great discussions and provocative questions being asked and a laser focus on increasing the level of care of canine athletes and active pet dogs."
