As students and faculty leave for winter break, I'd like to communicate Lake Park's process for making weather-related decisions. Winter months in Chicagoland can be prove to be very challenging like this week from snowy conditions to dangerous temperatures and windchills. Arriving at a decision to keep school open, close it, or dismiss early due to inclement weather remains one of the most difficult determinations for any Superintendent.

Because weather forecasts can often be inaccurate - and conditions can quickly change - we rely on the most up-to-date information, which typically means waiting until the early morning on any given school day. Lake Park does not make decisions in isolation, but rather consults with our sender school districts, the bus transportation company and neighboring school districts throughout DuPage County.

The conference calls usually begin at 4:45 a.m. with the elementary and middle schools, followed by the high school and unit districts at 5:00 a.m. This means 5:15 a.m. is the latest a closure decision will be made and notification will begin.

Lake Park only communicates with families if the decision is made to close school; otherwise, normal operations are expected and students should plan for their usual arrival and start times. District communication about weather-related decisions occurs through multiple channels:

* Automated call to all District-registered telephone numbers

* Automated email to all District-registered email addresses

* Emergency notification banner on the  district website

* Tweet via the District's Twitter feed  @LPLancers

* Published status on the  Emergency Closing Center (includes notifying WGN (720) and WBBM (780) AM radio stations; CBS2; NBC5; WGN9; Fox32; CLTV)

* Courtesy notification to   Roselle Police Department

Occasions like weather-related closings are an important reminder to keep contact information as current as possible. Please be sure to provide any updates in the  Home Access Center (HAC), so that we may continue to communicate with you through the automated notification system.

The safety of our students and staff is the primary factor in making these important decisions. We understand that families may not always agree with the District, and acknowledge that parents have the ultimate choice to send students to school.

Thank you to our entire Lake Park school community for an outstanding first semester. I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season! We look forward to next semester that resumes on  Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Lancers Spread Holiday Cheer
Lake Park students, teachers, staff and alumni have been engaged in numerous philanthropic and volunteer efforts the past several weeks to help community neighbors and spread holiday cheer. Below are a few highlights:

Caroling Choir
The Lake Park Choir could be heard on campus and around town signing the songs of the season. From performances at the Distinguished Citizens Breakfast and Night of Fine Dining to community caroling at the Roselle Cocoa Crawl and the Bloomingdale Library, the voices brought smiles and joy to people of all ages.

"Sharing Tree"
East Campus Sophomore Class Council one
again sponsored the annual Sharing Tree to benefit underprivileged  children in Bloomingdale Township. Lancer students and staff were invited to take a bell with age/gift description for families in need and return a wrapped gift with the bell taped to the present.

Hope in Chicago
Some Lancers for Life are making a difference with their "Hope in Chicago 2016" campaign by donating bags of food, drinks, warm gloves, hats, socks and more to those in need. Their spirit of generosity and volunteerism continues almost a decade after leaving Lake Park. View highlights from last year of these alumni giving back to the community.

Stand For The Silent
Thanks to Lake Park's Stand for the Silent student organization for greeting classmates and staff last Friday with hot chocolate and handwritten positive messages on every locker. The sounds of the choir filled the entrance with holiday music and added to the festive spirit!

"You're The Reason"
Inspired by a video from Oak Park High School in Kansas that recently went viral, t he Lancer Way committee decided to make a Lake Park version using the same concept. Teachers were asked to record a brief video telling a student or group of students that they matter and are the reason why they come to work every day.

The amount of videos received from staff was positively overwhelming! To keep the highlight video under five minutes, clips were randomly selected. Although not all of the footage could be included, the genuine reactions from students make it well worth it to watch  "You're The Reason" video.

In addition, Lancers were given the opportunity to personalize "Students Care" note cards and explain why they are thankful too. Over 800 students took the time to complete a card of gratitude that was distributed in staff mailboxes. The project reminded teachers and students alike that Lancers truly care for each other!
Last Chance to Register for SAT Test Preparation Course
In preparation for the SAT test dates available next spring for juniors, Lake Park will begin offering a course in January 2017 to develop the study skills to improve SAT scores.

Enrollment for the Tuesday/Thursday after school courses are full, but the Saturday morning sessions are still available. Registration is $210 and will be accepted through the January 3, 2017 deadline or until all spots are filled.  View the course brochure for additional details and to complete an application .

Although the College Board provides preparatory materials online, this course is beneficial to students because it provides an authentic and interactive learning experience with detailed class instruction, textbooks and supplemental materials, and an intensive review session prior to the SAT on April 5, 2017.
Explore Advanced Placement and Elective Options
On Tuesday, January 10 at 7:00 p.m. at West Campus, Lake Park will host an informational evening for sophomore and junior students and their parents. This evening is devoted to exploring Advanced Placement course options and the many elective classes that are available for the 2017-18 school year.

As students transition to West Campus, there are often more opportunities in their schedules to explore courses related to their college and career interests. The Class of 2018 and the Class of 2019 will be registering for next year's classes in January 2017, and this program will provide students and parents with some much needed information prior to the enrollment process.

Teachers and counselors will be available to answer questions and provide tours of the facilities. Please plan to begin the evening by meeting in the West Campus auditorium.
Looking Ahead: 2017-18 Course Selection
The arrival of the new calendar year signals planning for next school year already. In January 2017, students will begin  registering for the 2017-18 academic year.

Course Selection Dates:
Class of 2018 - Juniors: January 17-24
Class of 2019 - Sophomores: January 17-20
Class of 2020 - Freshmen: January 23-30
Class of 2021 - Incoming Freshmen (8th Grade): January 9-26

Parents are strongly encouraged to review the information that will be sent next month and carefully select elective choices together with their sons and daughters, as those choices will be permanent once course selection is complete. SSP presentations about elective choices will be conducted to help in the decision-making process for course selection.

Fashion Construction Project Benefits "Soul Hope"
East Campus Lancers in Fashion Construction class recently participated in a unique community service project that will help children in Uganda. A luxury for most Ugandan children, shoes are much needed to prevent bacteria and viruses from entering the skin, and to protect against jiggers.

This week's "shoe cutting party" included students donating a pair of jeans, tracing and cutting pattern pieces purchased from Soul Hope , and pinning the uppers and lowers together. In addition, heel inserts for the shoes were cut from milk jugs.

Family & Consumer Science teacher Jennifer Henderson will ship the denim shoe pieces to Sole Hope's headquarters in North Carolina. From there, the supplies  will then be sent to Uganda, where local Sole Hope tailors and shoemakers will assemble them into shoes. The heel inserts and denim pieces are used for the shoe top, while recycled tires are used for the shoe sole.

FCCLA students and the Fashion Construction class will participate again next semester. To contribute, people can donate jeans to Lake Park, donate money directly to Sole Hope to "sponsor" a pair of shoes or help with a collection drive of needed items
HAC Provides 24/7 Access to Grades and Fees
The Board of Education recently discussed the District's intention to increase communication efforts with families who have outstanding fees. Reminder notices were mailed on December 9 to families who currently have a financial obligation due to Lake Park.

Beginning in January 2017, accounts will be referred to a collection agency if families are behind on payments, or have not yet applied payment towards the balance. Lake Park offers online convenience for families to check the status of outstanding fees and make payments directly.
When the Home Access Center is utilized to check grades, parents may notice an amount appearing in the upper right-hand corner. Outstanding fees are displayed in red.

Families who are in need of fee waivers or a deferred payment plan should have already made arrangements during the summer registration process. If your financial circumstances have changed, please contact the Principal's office at the appropriate campus.

It is important to make timely payments each semester to avoid the compounding effect for your family and for the District. Parents are strongly encouraged to check their status and make payments directly by the end of this calendar year.
