We Are Family serves seniors in the North Capitol Street, Columbia Heights, Shaw, Adams-Morgan, and Park View neighborhoods. We bring advocacy, services, organizing, and companionship into the homes of the elderly, while helping to build friendships across boundaries like race, class, religion, age, culture, and sexual orientation.  Thanks for helping to build our dream of just, caring, and inclusive community!

HELP SUPPORT PARK
MORTON RESIDENTS
Senior Visits Saturday

Dear We Are Family friends:

Talk about spreading some holiday cheer--thanks to all of you, we delivered 755 Thanksgiving baskets! Great work, one and all... some of our volunteers pictured above and many more below! :-)

We are soon to be back to grocery deliveries (12/10 & 12/17) and our Holiday Gift Delivery (12/24)... and will need your help.

HOWEVER, TODAY we hope you will support low-income Park Morton residents who were promised new housing in the community while their run-down and sometimes dangerous complex is redeveloped for mixed incomes.

Here is the low down from our friends at Jews United For Justice:

"The Park Morton public housing apartments are slated for redevelopment, but residents must not be displaced as a result of the redevelopment process.

Instead, new housing should be built on nearby public land - temporary Bruce Monroe Park - so that many families can move directly from the existing Park Morton into new units, which would allow them to maintain the strong social fabric of their community, and retain access to the schools and jobs they already have.

A local opposition group, "Save Bruce Monroe Park," is getting louder. We need to amplify our support for the redevelopment project in response. Take action with us, alongside Park Morton residents and Bread for the City for Park Morton residents to have safe, stable, and dignified homes. (FOR INFO, WRITE Mark at [email protected])

Action:
  • If you live in the neighborhood and are confused about what's going on, you're not alone! I'm happy to send you more information and/or connect you with someone who's been involved with this campaign so you can talk about it.
  • SIGN THIS PETITION!  Let's show DC Council and Zoning Commission that they have widespread support to move the project forward. Ask everyone you know to sign the petition!
  • We will be testifying in front of the Zoning Commission on Monday, December 5 starting at 6:30PM to ask the commissioners to increase the density of the block so public housing, workforce, and market rate apartments can be built on half of Bruce Monroe Park. Especially if you live in ANC 1A or 1B, WE NEED YOU to speak at this hearing! Email [email protected] if you're interested."
PLEASE SUPPORT PARK MORTON RESIDENTS: SIGN THE PETITION, SPEAK OUT, SPREAD THE WORD!

We are also doing visits to seniors on Saturday, just let Mark know if you can come, OK? AGAIN, THANKS SO SO MUCH!
