Creative Loafing: Daddy Kool to host inaugural food drive for a St. Pete nonprofit  
 
Help Daddy Kool Records fill the St. Petersburg Free Clinic's pantry for the holidays.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, the downtown St. Pete record store will host its first canned food drive to benefit the Free Clinic Food Bank, which distributes to more than 65 agencies - shelters, community kitchens and child care centers among them.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: Update on St. Pete pier progress coming Thursday (Renderings) 
 
St. Petersburg City Council will hear an update on the progress of the city's new pier on Thursday morning.

Updated renderings will be presented to council by ASD Architects, Rogers Partners Architects + Urban Designers, representing the pier, and W Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Wannemacher Jensen Architects representing the pier approach, the city said Wednesday.

Tampa Bay Times: USF St. Petersburg and city join for green initiative 
 
The University of South Florida St. Petersburg joined with the city to announce their commitment to operate completely on clean, renewable energy.

USFSP Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska announced a plan to reduce the university's emissions by half before 2035 and achieve full carbon neutrality by 2050. Part of that plan includes a $125,000 investment in a solar carport near the new College of Business.

Tampa Bay Times: Darden Rice new St. Pete City Council chairwoman

The St. Petersburg City Council provisionally picked its 2017 leadership Thursday.

Darden Rice was elected chairwoman over council member Jim Kennedy by a 5-2 vote. Council member Charlie Gerdes was absent.

Kennedy also lost to Lisa Wheeler-Bowman for vice-chair by a 4-3 vote.

Tampa Bay Times: Romano: Why, yes, I'd love to spend millions more on the pier

Well, this is bad news. They've gone and raised the price of spectacular.

Based on the latest construction catalog, a city should expect only a no-frills, starter pier for its initial $46 million investment. Throw in an additional $20 million and you can get a complementary package that links the pier to downtown and creates a super-nice waterfront district.

News Channel 8: St. Pete Mayor wants more money for new pier project

Plans for a new pier in St. Petersburg have been in the works for years and on Thursday morning, city leaders got a better idea of what it is going to look like and how much it is going to cost.

The old pier was demolished last year and plans are now taking shape to re-develop the 26-acre area into "Pier Park". The project includes two different components: the actual over water pier and the pier approach.

Creative Loafing: Dancer Calvin Royal III returns to St. Pete for his hometown's highest honor

CL's been following the career of dancer Calvin Royal III since we were Weekly Planet. Trained at Gibbs H.S./Pinellas Center for the Arts, Royal has leapt higher and higher since we first profiled him, moving from prestigious dance academies to the American Ballet Theatre, winning a $50,000 Annenberg fellowship and getting recognized by New York Magazine as one of its annual "Reasons to Love New York."

And this Saturday night, his hometown is going to give him some love: He'll be awarded the highest honor given to individuals by the City of St. Petersburg. During the performance at the Mahaffey Theatre of A Family Blessing - successor to The Chocolate Nutcracker, in which Calvin starred during high school - the city's urban affairs director, Dr. Nikki Gaskin-Capehart, will present Royal with The Keys to the City.

Here's a feel-good column to unwrap this holiday season that will reveal the Tampa Bay metro area is rebounding as one of the better performing, larger metro areas in the United States.

That's great news after a decade of rough times in the bay area economy, hitting a low ranking among the nation's top 200 metros at No. 169 in 2009. That's when the recession cut deepest in Tampa Bay and Florida, and the housing market bust was most intense.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg's bike share program off to a promising start

On a recent sunny Wednesday afternoon, Nicole Ruiz decided to try a new app along the waterfront.

She wasn't chasing Pokemon. Instead she and a friend, Chris Alexander, made their way to a rack of bikes near the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Hotel and Golf Resort.

"This is so cool," said Ruiz, 23, as the St. Petersburg resident fiddled with her phone to figure out how to release the bike.
