SCREENAGERS
We believe in the importance of parents helping children find a healthy balance with screen  time. This is challenging!
Screenagers is about the impact of the digital age on children and how to help families mini mize harmful effects and find balance. After seeing the film, people tell us that they feel more  confident and better equipped to establish balance around screen time.  We hope you will join us!  Sponsored by the Hartford Area Schools (Richfield, Friess Lake, Erin, HoNoR, Hartford Jt. 1, and Hartford Union High School) More details coming soon.
SCHOOL CLOSING LETTER
Winter is coming.  Please read the attached letter regarding procedures for delaying school or calling school off due to inclement weather.

We All Get Angry, and that’s Okay!

As I enter classrooms to teach guidance lessons, I continually hear students asking me how to calm down when they are angry or how to cool down when things get “heated” at home.  Since this is such a common question, I would like to share some of the more effective “cool down” techniques with you as well!

  • Deep, mindful breathing—breathe in through your nose for four counts (like you are smelling a freshly baked cake) and out through your mouth (like you are blowing out birthday candles) and continue this in and out process for at least one minute.
  • Write down what you are feeling angry about so you identify where the anger is coming from.  Once you see what is causing the anger, you can begin to do things to avoid these situations in the future or to find a different way to address these incidents.
  • Have a list of “cool down” techniques posted in the house and use them when you begin to recognize physical symptoms associated with anger (hot face, clenched muscles, sweat, headache, shaking, etc.).  Practice your “cool down” techniques when you are not angry so you are more likely to use them when you are feeling angry or upset.
  • Possible “Cool Down” Techniques:
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Chewing gum or sucking on a mint
  • Deep, mindful breathing
  • Squeezing something soft, like a pillow or a stress ball
  • Taking a break in a safe, happy place
  • Resting on a bed or a couch with your eyes closed

  • Playing or listening to music
  • Drawing, painting, or coloring
  • Writing a poem or song
  • Drinking cold water or taking a shower or a bath
  • Playing with clay
  • Playing on a device or watching a movie or show that calms you
  • Talking to someone about what you are feeling
  • Keeping a journal or diary
  • Remind yourself that is okay to be angry. It is a feeling and all feelings are okay, but take the time to learn how to calm yourself down, so you do not take your anger out on others.  Once you find what works for you, practice it, and over time, you will be able to cool yourself down quicker so you can experience more happy feelings!
