What's New? A NEW COATI COMPANION
Companionship is an important thing for many species from lions to giraffe, dolphins, to even humans. But many smaller mammals thrive when presented with a new partner or companion, too. That's why we're excited to announce our male brown-nosed coati, Poncho, is a getting a friend.

Poncho, who is three years old, will be gaining a new companion in the form of Chica, a female juvenile white-nosed coati who came to us from Zoo Boise.

Animal Encounter "PAWSITIVELY" CRAZY FOR PUMPKIN!

CMZoo Animals are "Pawsitively" Crazy for Pumpkins!
Many humans are known for being crazy about pumpkins when fall rolls around, but did you know that animals are, too? Now, they don't get pumpkin spice lattes or pumpkin waffles, but they do often like to gorge on the gourd, itself.

Animal Care Manager Dina Bredahl said the Zoo's orangutans and gorillas are pretty partial to pumpkins, which they will receive throughout the fall as fresh, fun enrichment and as part of their diet.
Conservation:  THE SWEETEST CANDY IS ORANGUTAN FRIENDLY

When it comes to candy, not everything is as sweet as it seems. Just like common household items such as toothpaste and laundry detergent, many candy choices contain palm oil. That's why Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has pledged to only hand out candy made with Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) and manufactured by companies who are members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

Children's Hospital Colorado:  DIG INTO THESE HEALTHY DIGESTION TIPS!
Humans aren't the only ones who get rumbly stomachs from time to time. Our CMZ animals can have digestion issues, too. Just like domestic dogs are known to eat grass to help aid in digestion, our animals sometimes will signal or show signs that their digestive health needs to be paid attention to.

Our on-site veterinary staff designs our animals' diets specifically to suit their species' physiological and dietary needs. Our animal care staff spends a huge portion of their day spending time with, training and monitoring their animals. With these two strategies combined, the vast majority of our animals' dietary needs and wants are met and exceeded, but sometimes, they will still not feel well.
Explore and Learn: LOFT ANIMALS LOVE PUMPKIN TOO!
Our Loft animals love pumpkins, too! October is clearly the month of the pumpkin. They are in the stores, farmer's markets, and yes, even at the Zoo! Some of our Loft animals really love pumpkins, and not just for eating.

Animals like Poe, our raven, or Marty, the American kestrel, aren't huge fans of pumpkin flavor. They like to use pumpkins as a nice spot to perch, or a great hiding spot to save some snacks for later.
