Class of 2021 Dons White Coats
In a ceremony at the New York Academy of Medicine on August 23rd, 88 members of the Class of 2021 of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine received their white coats, that tangible symbol of the medical profession.

STEVEN J. LEVITZ, DPM ('79)
Professor of Orthopedic Sciences
Steven J. Levitz, DPM's uncle, the late Joseph  Levitz, DPM ('39), introduced his nephew to Herman Sonderling, the former College President, who had graduated from the School of Chiropody (as NYCPM was then called) in 1914. Dr. Sonderling gave Steven Levitz an application in 1974; he took the Podiatry Boards (MCATs didn't exist yet) and he entered the school in 1975.

 Judith Quintana, MPA
, is now the Assistant Dean for Clinical Clerkships and Affiliations
. Working with two deans, her prime responsibility is working with third- and fourth-year students, helping them obtain their credentials and their clinical clerkships. Ms. Quintana has deep experience in medical education, including important positions at the Sackler School of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.
Obed Figueroa, MA, EdD
, the new Director of  Enrollment Management, arrives at NYCPM with over a decade of medical education experience. Mr. Figueroa was formerly Director of Admissions at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, and was one of the key staff members who helped guide Touro's establishment in the Harlem community. He was directly responsible for admitting over 800 students to both the Doctorate and Master's programs there. ... Read more

West Point's Colonel Michael Neary, DPM, Retires
On a celebratory cruise on the Hudson River, Colonel Neary (left) holds his plaque from NYCPM, and is joined by, left to right, Susan M. Rice, DPM ('88), Michael J. Trepal, DPM ('81), and Samantha Trepal (2019).
Colonel Michael Neary, DPM, Director of Podiatric Services at the hospital at West Point, retired from the Army in September. Colonel Neary, a 1991 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now Temple), is an assistant professor at NYCPM. The West Point Boot Fit and Foot Structure Study was being conducted under his auspices. At his retirement ceremony and celebration, NYCPM presented him with a plaque recognizing his service.

Feet Serve as Shock Absorbers for the Body: Deputy Chairman, Board of Trustees, Rock G. Positano, DPM ('88), MPH
 A study by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Harvard Medical School suggests new guidelines may be in order for evaluating and treating lower extremity pain. Investigators set out to determine if there was a relation between foot pain and lower extremity joint pain, and they found a significant association between foot pain and knee or hip pain. Now Our Ultrasound Scans are State of the Art
Thanks to a generous donation by 20/20 Imaging, NYCPM and the Foot Center of New York have acquired the updated technology of the company's state-of-the-art HS1 ultrasound scanner. The scanner is already seeing heavy use, in both clinical applications with patients in the FCNY and for education and training purposes in NYCPM. In the FCNY, the scanner is used for both diagnostic imaging and ultrasound-guided injections among other uses.

The NYCPM library has recently assembled a historical exhibit about the New York State Podiatric Medical Association, which was founded in 1895, and existed as the Podiatry Society of the State of New York until about the early 1980s. NYCPM and University of Northampton Collaborate on Forensic Research
Dr. Mike Curran
, Senior Lecturer in Podiatry at the University of Northampton, United Kingdom, spent his sabbatical at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM), where he met with Bryan Kagan, DPM ('80), Adjunct Professor at NYCPM in forensic podiatry. They are looking at the size of footprints recorded at crime scenes and if there are differences with the actual foot size of a suspect.
The results from the study will be available in Spring 2018. NYCPM and University of Northampton signed an agreement to strengthen joint projects and the exchange of academic staff back in 2015. (Appeared in PM News, 9-21-17)

Big 'Party on Park' for Community
On Sunday October 1st, Park Avenue between 125th and 118th Streets was closed to traffic but open to people, for the Party on Park, a giant celebration organized by NHEMA/Uptown Grand Central and Desander Más, NYCPM's VP Development and NHEMA Board member. The Foot Center of New York was one of the health providers at the street fair, and our faculty and students saw giant crowds of people for free foot screenings and health information; over 100 members of the community signed up for appointments.

APMWA Announces 32nd Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association has announced its 32nd Annual Student Writing Competition.
- All papers must be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.
- There is no word limit. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
- First prize is one thousand dollars ($1,000), sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.
- This competition is open to any enrolled podiatric student.
- Entries must be received by 4/1/18 via e-mail at [email protected]
Entries become the property of APMWA, which may arrange publication of the entry.

Service for September 11th
September 11th is now marked as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, and NYCPM students began what they hope will be an annual tradition of giving and helping those in need. Remembering The Lost on September 11th
There are services annually at the WTC site with the reading of the names of those who died that day, but for the first time, the names of those who died subsequently due to health issues related to their service as workers and volunteers at Ground Zero were read this year. Arthur Gudeon, DPM ('60) had volunteered at Ground Zero, and was asked to read names on the new list, including that of Tracey Che, DPM, who worked with Dr. Gudeon in their "makeshift podiatry office" in a pew in St. Paul's Chapel, and who died at age 50 of a lung condition.

Presentation
Zev Leifer, PhD, Professor of Pre-Clinical Sciences, gave a platform presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Digital Pathology Association, ("Pathology Visions 2017") in San Diego, CA, on October 2, 2017. The lecture was titled "Applications of Digital Pathology in Pathology Education at the Undergraduate and Graduate Level." The talk described three websites that he developed to aid in training students and residents to analyze digital slides.
