Thank you for being a valuable part of my network of lawyers and fellow lawyer-loving professionals.
I’m excited to be launching this e-newsletter to share ideas, trends, and advice I’ve been collecting as I work with – and learn from – lawyers and law firms. My goal is to be an aggregator of wisdom for lawyers to help them be more joyful and have a great relationship with their money.

What greater bliss could there be than feeling 100% in control of your professional & financial future? Many lawyers will tell you that bringing in revenue and sourcing new business will help you fuel your freedom and control your destiny.
I was honored to present to the Coalition of Women Initiatives in Law last month, highlighting Strategies for Success in
Networking & Business Development. Here are the tips that most resonated with the group...
- The 3 In's - Add value and stay in touch with your network with these authentic reasons for reaching out:
- Information
- Introductions
- Invitations
- Rule of 1's and 3's - Avoid awkward moments at networking functions by seeking out groups of 1's and 3's rather than interrupting twosomes.
- Quick Pitch - Explain what you do like you would to your grandma - keep it short & simple: "I (verb) (target market) (solve problem)" - example: "I help lawyers have a great relationship with their money."
- DNS - Email yourself the Definitive Next Steps from conversations to tackle first thing the next day. These are baby steps that build credibility and trust that you will do what you say you're going to do, when you say you're going to do it.
- Building Good Habits - The most successful biz dev gurus make it a part of their routine. Can you make it a habit to email your network when you're commuting, or spend an hour every Wednesday afternoon focused on building your business?

Don't answer a recruiter's question of why you're looking to go in-house with "for a better work-life balance" - it's just not a good answer... A recruiter should only be 5% of your job search.
- a legal recruiter

You want happiness for an hour, take a nap. You want happiness for a day, go fishing.
You want happiness for life, help someone.
- Judge Anne M. Burke, honored at the Women's Bar Foundation 2017 Scholarship Award Luncheon

We need to see an F you scenario, as well.
- a request to see an alternative retirement scenario for what it looks like if you quit tomorrow because you just can't take it anymore
Most lawyers spend a lot of time and energy worrying about whether their big paychecks will continue - it can give some peace of mind to run several cash flow scenarios, with a few based on lower future income assumptions.
