Tips from Dr. D.

What's the secret to getting the best letter of recommendation?

Here are some tips:
  • After a faculty member or other individual has agreed to write a letter for you, give that person a portfolio including your resume, a brief description of the opportunity for which they are writing the letter, the date the letter is due and how it is to be delivered (request online, hard copy, etc.)
  • Include a draft of your personal statement and a short list of why you think you would be very appropriate for the position or opportunity
  • Please give the letter writer plenty of time
  • Afterwards, write a nice thank you note preferably on good stationery - and do let the them know the outcome
One another thing: A student recently drew my attention to the ePortfolio that can be created at
https://www.ufic.ufl.edu/UAP/InternationalScholarsProgram.html. I have not had a chance to look into it but this may be a place where you could collect info to share with a recommendation letter writer.

Go for it!
