On November 4th, TASK hosted Tobii Dynavox for a Boardmaker Back to School Days Lunch and Learn. Attendees were treated to a delicious lunch and hands on trials of amazing assistive technologies! Included were educational software titles such as Boardmaker Online, multiple augmentative and alternative communication devices, AAC software and applications, computer access solutions like eye tracking devices and much more. All this was provided at no cost by the wonderful folks at Tobii Dynavox. Many thanks to those who attended and to Josh, Courtney and Betsy from Tobii Dynavox for making this such a successful community event!

If you missed out on this event, not to worry! We have many Tobii Dynavox items here in our TECH Center. Just call (714) 533-8275 or e-mail [email protected] to make an appointment to come try them out.

This month, I want to focus on helpful tools and resources for parents and professionals.

WEBSITES:

The Center on Technology and Disability (CTD) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs. The Center is designed to increase the capacity of families and providers to advocate for, acquire, and implement effective assistive and instructional technology practices, devices, and services. Research-based technologies, used appropriately, have great potential to help infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities participate fully in daily routines; have increased access to the general educational curriculum; improve their functional outcomes and educational results; and meet college- and career-ready standards. CTD serves diverse audiences, including families, teachers, administrators, researchers, service providers, personnel preparation programs, family information and training centers, community resource centers, product developers and vendors, and other relevant programs. CTD works collaboratively with organizations throughout the country in strengthening their ability to provide high quality, current, and useful resources on assistive and instructional technology tools and strategies.

This page provides parents, as well as teachers, of children with disabilities with information on specific disabilities, a glossary of special education terms, and links to helpful resources.

The Department of Education provides a list of resources pertaining to the needs of children with disabilities.

That is all for this month. Tune in next month for tips on buying toys for children with special needs and resources on where to buy them. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy APPing!
