The Oklahoma League In Action

Last week, Oklahoma Municipal League Executive Director Mike Fina attended the Oklahoma Academy's 2017 Town Hall "Oklahoma Votes-Improving the Election Process, Voter Access, and Informed Voter Engagement" event in Durant.

OML's  Executive Director Mike Fina, Missy Dean, Sarah Lingenfelter, and Cheryl Adams  attended the District Dinner Meeting in Ponca City.

Kelly Danner and Cathy Pulver attended the Oklahoma Municipal Clerks, Treasurers, and Finance Officials Association (OMCTFOA) Fall Conference in Stillwater.

Daniel McClure attended the Metro Attorney's Lunch at Rococo in Oklahoma City. 

Missy Dean attended the Oklahoma State Chamber's 2030 Regional Forum in Stillwater on Thursday.

The District Dinner Meeting on Tuesday, October 24th in Tahlequah has been CANCELLED.

Call for Nominations for OML Board Seat for District 8: Deadline THIS FRIDAY, October 27th
The Oklahoma Municipal League District 8 Board seat is now open due to Randy Ross, Mayor of Choctaw, becoming the new OML Board Vice President. Nominations will be received until Friday, October 27, 2017 and will be presented to the OML board of directors at their November 2nd  meeting.  More Information and Sample Resolution
TSET Selects Sand Springs and Wagoner to Receive Healthy Communities Incentive Grant
Sand Springs and Wagoner received a $50,000 Grant from the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) for promoting healthy choices within their community. Sand Springs will use these funds to create trails in a city-wide trail project. Wagoner will utilize their funds to upgrade parks around the community. Sand Springs and Wagoner have made all of their city properties smoke-free, improving walking and street quality for the citizens, and promoting farmers' markets. Congratulations to the city of Sand Springs and Wagoner for receiving such an honor. 2017 OML District Dinner Meetings - Woodward and Ponca City Dinners Held, Next Up:  Join Us In Weatherford on October 26th! 
Join us for one of our upcoming District Dinner Meetings! The next District Dinner is THURSDAY October 26th in Weatherford at Lucille's Roadhouse. November's Dinner District Meetings will kick off in Collinsville at Veteran's Memorial Building on Wednesday, November 1st, followed by a meeting in Krebs at Pete's Place on Thursday, November 9th. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to connect with other municipalities in your district and meet your OML Field Representative. OML will facilitate the meeting where we will discuss the 2018 legislative session and share the latest League news. There also will be an opportunity to share what is going on in your municipality. RSVP your spot today!

Recently OML hosted district dinner meetings for over 50 municipal officials in Woodward and Ponca City. Attendees heard from OML Executive Director Mike Fina about the new Field Representative Program and also heard from OML's Missy Dean, Sarah Lingenfelter, and Cheryl Adams about legislative updates during special session, the upcoming Congress of Mayors and Mayor's Summer Conference, and the Community Leadership Class (CLD). OML thanks the Oklahoma Municipal Assurance Group (OMAG) for sponsoring the event in Woodward and to Charlie Swinton from BancFirst for sponsoring the dinner in Ponca City.

Registration and Hotel Information For The Oklahoma Municipal Judges Fall Conference On October 26th and 27th
On October 26 and 27 at the Marriott Conference Center in Norman, the Oklahoma Municipal Judges Association will host their 2017 Fall Conference. Rooms at the hotel, Marriott Conference Center at NCED in Norman are booked but there are other hotel options near by. Register For The Municipal Clerks & Treasurers Training In Sand Springs: November 3rd
On November 3rd in Sand Springs, the Oklahoma Municipal League will host its Municipal Clerks and Treasurers (MC&T) training. This workshop fulfills state requirements for the MC&T certification program, as well as 4 hours of Certified Municipal Officials (CMO) credit. If you are a current member of the MC&T program, there is no charge to attend these events. Contact Kelly Danner if you have any questions. New Officials Institute Held In Woodward, Registration Available For Next Session On November 16th In McAlester
Thursday, October 12, Oklahoma Municipal League staff and instructors traveled to Woodward and hosted approximately 50 municipal officials at the Woodward Conference Center. Attendees heard from municipal professionals with over 100 years of municipal knowledge and experience with topics such as Open Records and Open Meetings. OML is lucky to have such professionals leading the New Officials Institute. 

Throughout the year OML provides an intensive educational program specifically tailored for newly elected and appointed officials as well as experienced officials who want to keep up-to-date on municipal issues. An officer is defined in 11 O.S. Section 1-102. State law requires each person elected for the first time to a position of a municipality on or after January 1, 2005, OR appointed for the first time on or after July 1, 2006, to attend an institute for municipal officials. The statute is codified at Title 11 O.S., Section 8-114.

OML Hosts SGR's 4th Dimension Leadership Workshop, November 29th

Employee Spotlight: Missy Dean
The Oklahoma Municipal League is fortunate to have had Deputy Director of External Operations and Government Relations Missy Dean for over sixteen years. Prior to coming to OML, she worked for Governor Frank Keating in the legal department as a paralegal and the state's Extradition Coordinator. Missy's dad was in the oil and gas industry, which is what brought their family to Oklahoma when she was just 10 years old. Missy's main responsibility is to advocate for cities and towns at the capitol which is her true passion. Missy has also served as the Membership Services Director, overseeing the annual conference, workshops, and publications. Missy loves baseball! She has a bucket list to attend all the major league baseball parks. As of today, she has seen the Red Sox at Fenway twice, Rockies, Royals, Rangers, Padres, Tigers twice, Phillies, and Diamondbacks. She is also a die-hard Oklahoma State University Cowboy fan.  Her greatest accomplishment in life is being a mother to her three amazing children  Brock, Makenzie, and Garett.

Cities and towns can apply for certification under both the community and business categories with this program. This program was promoted at the TSET booth by the Oklahoma State Department of Health at the Oklahoma Municipal League Conference. Please visit Certified Healthy OK for more information.

On December 15th at Rose State College in Midwest City, mark your calendars for the Practical Guide Workshop. In this workshop you will hear about topics such as Code Enforcement and Meeting Decorum. Registrations will begin soon, so keep checking for updates!
