The Reverend Richard Hess was born in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania in 1932. He was the only son of Walton and Alice Hess, both farmers.
Educated in the local public school system, Rev. Hess excelled in all of his endeavors. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955 and then began his theological studies at Drew University and finished them at Episcopal Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia.
In 1960, at the age of 28, Father Hess was selected to start a new parish, St. Christopher's, in Oxford, Pennsylvania. He then went on to become an Assistant at St. David's Episcopal Church in Wayne, Pennsylvania where he eventually became rector and served in that position from 1967-1983.
In the years following his retirement from St. David's, Rev. Hess served in various positions at Bethesda by the Sea, Palm Beach; Trinity Cathedral, Miami; Grace Cathedral, San Francisco; and St. John's the Evangelist, Chicago.
Father Hess was an expert gardener and he loved his gardens wherever he was. He was particularly known for his gardens at his summer home on Martha's Vineyard.
In his later years, he was a resident at Atria Woodbriar Place in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and became known there as "The Mayor."
Rev. Hess was gifted in his approach to Ministry. His care and compassion for all mankind was ever present and he derived particular satisfaction in exercising the rich and diverse functions of the priesthood. He was considered an effective preacher of the gospel.
Father Hess leaves a family and a group of friends that adored him, and that have a great respect for the life he lived. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren, Owen and Kat, children of Mark and Kelly; Caroline, Rory, Whitney and Brody, children of John and Bernadette; and Victoria and Olivia, children of Elizabeth and Peter.
He always gave of himself to all.

Padre Hess deja a su familia y a su grupo de amistades que lo adoraban, teniendo gran respeto a la vida que tuvo. De forma particular siempre estuvo orgulloso de sus nietos, Owen y Kat, hijos de Mark y Kelly; Caroline, Rory, Whitney y Brody, hijos de John y Bernadette; y Victoria y Olivia, hijas de Elizabeth y Peter. Siempre se dio por entero a todos.
