Did You Know?

Biomass is organic material that comes from plants and animals, and it is a renewable source of energy.

Message From the Executive Director of SBCCOG

It's Thanksgiving month and time to give thanks for how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful place, the South Bay, with our great scenery, growing economy and rich cultural and recreational opportunities. It is also time to reflect on the importance of protecting and preserving what we have by being good stewards of our environment. At the SBCCOG and our South Bay Environmental Services Center, we also recognize our volunteers this month in a special reception in their honor for the great work they have done throughout the year to bring our programs to the public.

And, in giving thanks, this famous Ancient Indian Proverb is noteworthy:

Treat the earth well.
It was not given to you by your parents,
it was loaned to you by your children.
We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors,
we borrow it from our Children.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Find the Best Time to Save Energy

Use Bear to show you when to do laundry, cook, clean, and run the A/C. Chances are you're doing some things during the midday peak hours when it's most critical to save electricity. But when you sign up for time-varying rates or other off-peak programs from your electric utility company - changing your schedule a little could save you a lot. Let Bear show you how.

Holiday Light Exchange with SBESC and Energy Upgrade CA

Find SBESC and Energy Upgrade CA at the Palos Verdes Farmers' Market on Sunday, November 20th or on Monday, November 28th at the Lawndale Angel Tree Lighting Ceremony to exchange your old lights for new LED strands for your tree!

Solarista Cafe

At the recent West Basin Water Harvest Festival (Oct 22), SoCalGas' mobile, solar-powered Solarista Café made an appearance to promote solar water heating installations. Attendees at the Water Harvest learned about solar water heating and the recently expanded rebate incentives while enjoying tea, coffee, and espresso brewed in the café.

Solar water heating systems capture the sun's heat and work with conventional or tankless natural gas water heaters to improve efficiency and reduce energy costs. SoCalGas customers who install solar water heating systems in single-family homes prior to December 15, 2016 can receive a rebate up to $10,000. Rebates of up to $800,000 at a rate of $25 per-therm are also available for multi-family and commercial system installations. For more information, please visit www.socalgas.com/solar.

LADWP Encourages Conservation with Free LED Bulbs

Small changes in daily habits can go a long way toward making big differences when it comes to saving energy. That's one of the messages behind the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's (LADWP) campaign to give two light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs to all of its 1.5 million residential customers.

And, according to a number of tweets and posts on social media, the free gifts packaged in a reusable tote bag have been a hit. One poster wrote: "This is really sweet! LADWP is sending free LED bulbs for energy efficiency. You get a bulb, you get a bulb. Everybody gets a bulb!"

The campaign began in September and continues through November. It is similar to a 2009 program that distributed 2.3 million compact fluorescent light bulbs to residential customers.

Switching from incandescent and CFLs to LEDs can save an estimated $238 in electric costs over the lifetime of each bulb.

Travel Pal
Share the Ride to the Next South Bay Event

Travel Pal a great tool for understanding your Personal Mobility Patterns - where you go and how you get there - (driving alone, bicycling, walking or taking the bus). It's also a fantastic way to find a carpool match for your trips to and from local events. Check out some of the local events that are using travel pal to help guide and direct their visitors to their venue.

Single-use wipes may be labeled as "flushable," but that does not mean they disappear when they are flushed down the toilet.  If flushed, baby wipes, cleaning wipes, personal hygiene wipes and similar items can block toilets and pipes. These items also accumulate within sewer pumps causing equipment failures and sewer overflows. This is such a widespread problem that water organizations from around the world, including the Sanitation Districts, are calling for changes in the manufacturing of wipes and re-labeling of all single-use wipes as "non-flushable" until safer standards are developed.

Rebates on Clean Vehicle Purchases Now Linked to Income

As of November 1st, prospective buyers of all-electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell cars who are considered low-income can receive more rebates under California's Clean Vehicle Rebate project.  While it's a perk for some, the program will exclude high-income earners from getting rebates.

This is an effort to boost sales of green cars and to increase the number of zero-emission vehicles on the road. People will receive a range of $3,500 to $7,000 dollars depending on their income and the type of vehicle they are looking to purchase.
The program also will tighten rebates for those earners who make above a certain amount.

Fresh Pics: Crenshaw/LAX Line Construction

The photos are going from north to south along the 8.5-mile route for the Crenshaw/LAX Line. I posted a map of the light rail line at the very bottom of the post. The project is forecast to open in fall 2019 and is funded primarily by Measure R, the half-cent sales tax approved by Los Angeles County voters in 2008.

Also, learn about other Metro programs such as Vanpool and ExpressLanes.
