Professor Pat Ackerman gives 'critical' advice to students in Salina Journal article

Critical thinking and communication skills - these are the additional proficiencies language arts professor Pat Ackerman believes students need to possess along with their technical expertise.

Ackerman, who has been with the Polytechnic Campus since 2000, was featured in an article in Tuesday's Salina Journal giving advice to students about what employers are looking for in the total package.

"Critical thinking is one of the 'soft skills' employers say many graduates don't have," Ackerman informs. "[But] critical thinking is complex for students today because they are inundated with so much information."

"They have to decide what to believe and how they are going to use that information in their lives. They have so much more to sift through."

Ackerman, who is also K-State's 2016-17 Coffman Chair for Distinguished Teaching Scholars, has a goal of using part of her platform as Coffman Chair to create a university-wide dialogue about critical thinking.

Richard B. Myers appointed as 14th president of Kansas State University

Kansas State University has a new leader. Two weeks ago, the Kansas Board of Regents announced the appointment of Richard B. Myers as the 14th president of K-State.

After the Board met and approved Myers' new position, he spoke about the reasons behind his decision to apply for the top job. Retired from the U.S. Air Force, Gen. Myers served as the 15th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001 to 2005.  As the nation's highest ranking military officer, Myers served as the principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council. Prior to becoming Chairman, Myers served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Thank you to campus security for working over the Thanksgiving holiday!

I would like to send a high-five to our outstanding security team for keeping a watchful eye over the campus during the Thanksgiving holiday. Members of security worked the four-day weekend, which most of us received off, and had to adjust their personal time with family and friends in order to guard the campus.  I appreciate your dedication to the job and the hard work you put in to keep our campus safe each and every day!
