BAY AREA URBAN MANUFACTURING SUMMIT
#BuiltInSanJose
On November 17, San Jose's Mayor Liccardo was joined by the mayors of San Francisco, Oakland and Fremont to support local manufacturing at the Inaugural Bay Area Urban Manufacturing Summit hosted by SF Made, a regional manufacturing advocacy group.
Of the four cities, San Jose has the largest manufacturing base, and has more manufacturingjobs than the other three cities combined: San Jose has 65,000 manufacturing jobs, Fremont has 26,000, San Francisco has 10,000 and Oakland has 7,500, according to
the report
.
A century ago, San Jose's manufacturing base was primarily oriented toward food processing. Mayor Sam Liccardo noted that the "Capital of Silicon Valley" was the home of canned fruit cocktail and Eggo Waffles factories in decades gone by. "Now we have a lot of advanced technology being made in San Jose," Liccardo said. "The prototypes are being made in San Jose. Our manufacturing is a great source of high-wage jobs. We are really bullish on our tech advantage."
San José manufacturers participating in the event were
Jabil, a contract electronics manufacturer, and Zebra Technologies, a maker of RFID scanners, who were highlighted in panel series of local suppliers and customers.
Bestronics, a local electronics manufacturing firm, was also featured in a short documentary shown to attendees. Read the full report here.

#BuiltinSanJose
OED has launched a blog series focusing on manufacturing in San Jose. This series will profile interesting and diverse companies in San Jose's thriving manufacturing sector, which directly employs more than 65,000 people.
Through our profile series, we hope to highlight many of the features that make San Jose uniquely situated as the manufacturing hub of Silicon Valley and demonstrate how designers, manufactures, suppliers, and service providers work together to quickly deliver high quality products to market.
From original equipment manufacturers, to machine shops, to electronic manufacturing services providers, to food and beverage companies, San Jose's manufacturing industry is as diverse as the people who call it home. Visit the OED blog for the story on a laid-off tech worker who became a custom manufacturer of wood cabinets.

/ ALL THE WAY HOME FOR AREA VETERANS
#DTSJ
On Veteran's Day, the City of San José and Santa Clara County celebrated the housing of 510 formerly homeless veterans, thanks to the All the Way Home campaign launched just one year ago.
All The Way Home is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between San Jose, the county and the county's Housing Authority and Destination: Home, a nonprofit that tackles homelessness. It was launched on Veterans Day last year.
"Today, we can proudly celebrate the significant progress we have made to house homeless veterans," Liccardo said. "However, we cannot take our foot off the gas or forget the heroes in our community who still need help. By working together, we will end veterans homelessness in our county by 2018."
The goal of the All The Way Home initiative is to house all of the estimated 703 homeless veterans which make up about 10 percent of the 6,556 homeless people living in Santa Clara County. Advocates are hoping to end veteran homelessness in the county by 2018.
Watch for ongoing updates in this newsletter on the progress of the active efforts underway in San José to address the issues of the homeless in our city.

/ STATE HOLDS WORKSHOPS ON CALIFORNIA COMPETES TAX CREDIT
#SJBizDevelop
To help spread awareness and encourage local investment, the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (Go Biz) is hosting a series of workshops throughout the State to promote the California Competes Tax Credit (CCTC) incentive program.
CCTC awards can be up to tens of millions of dollars in tax credits for companies that invest in California. For the 2016-17 fiscal year, the Governor's Office has approved $243 million in tax credits. Since the program's launch in 2014, more than $340 million in tax credits have been awarded to more than 500 companies, creating over 55,000 jobs and spurring $12.9 billion in local investment.
The City of San Jose Office of Economic Development (SJ OED) has promoted the program since its creation and has worked with several companies in applying for the program. For example, SJ OED worked with Samsung in building its new North American headquarters in North San Jose.
For people and organizations located in the South Bay, Peninsula, or Alameda County, the nearest workshop will take place on Dec. 7th at the Fremont Public Library from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. SJ OED strongly encourages any interested parties to attend to learn more about this exciting program.
