Caring for Families Who Love Their Pets

The holiday season is upon us, and many pet parents plan to include their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, be mindful of the hazards that the season can bring to your pet.  Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe during your celebrations.

1. Securely anchor your Christmas Tree.

2. Tinsel-keep away from your pet so they do not ingest it causing an obstruction.

3. Avoid plants such as  mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias.

4. Holiday ornaments such as snow globes and bubble lights may contain poisonous chemicals to your pet, so keep safely away from your furry family.

5.  Keep wires, batteries, and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws reach.

6.  Holiday foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, currants, and xylitol ( a sweetener and commonly found in chewing gum) is toxic to dogs.

7.  Keep alcohol away from your pet.

8. Keep liquid potpourri and burning candles away from your pet(s).

9.  Make sure human medication is safely stored out of your pet's reach.

10. Limit or forego "Table Scraps" for Fido and Fluffy.

Pets Make Us Feel Better

Studies have shown that the benefits to having an animal companion are greatly beneficial emotionally, physically, psycho-socially, and can even be an option for the therapy of many ailments. Below are just a few of the benefits of having our beloved companions by our side:
  • Pets have a positive impact on depression and anxiety.  This may explain the value many people find in therapy animals, which are trained to help people deal with worry, unhappiness and anxiety, and have been found to even reduce the perception of pain.
  • Dog owners who regularly walk their dogs are more physically active and less likely to be obese than those who don't own or walk a dog.
  • Cat owners have a significantly lower risk of heart-attack deaths.
  • Pet owners have lower heart rates and blood pressure compared to those without pets.
  • Childhood exposure to dogs and cats can protect against developing allergies and asthma later in life, possibly because the contact with pet microbes occurs while the immune system is still developing.
  • People who live with pets are significantly less lonely than those who do not have an animal companion.  Having a pet might compensate for the absence of human companionship.
There is no doubt that pets bring us joy, laughter, and happiness every single day.  And now knowing there are health benefits in addition to the love they give, makes having a beloved companion that much more wonderful!
