Supporting a healthy, vibrant community
For all of us, regardless of where we fall on the political spectrum, trying to remain positively engaged in the important issues facing our nation, and the world, has been dispiriting. For me, what has been most frustrating is that the national debate about solutions to income inequality has been short on specific proposals about how to empower families and communities to improve the lives of all citizens. The economic issues related to an economy that leaves many of our neighbors behind are issues we struggle with here on the Lower Cape.
We are all well aware of the lack of affordable places to live in our community, and of the challenge of making ends meet in our seasonal, largely service based economy. A vast majority of the residents of our affordable homes work full time, yet don't earn enough to afford a place to live - a dynamic compounded by our region's housing market, driven by seasonal buyers and renters earning their living off Cape. And I believe we are all committed to taking action to address climate changes and preserve this beautiful place we call home.
My take away from the election is that the work we do at the CDP, creating opportunities for people to work, live and thrive on the Lower Cape, is essential to the health and vibrancy of our community. While what happens in Washington matters, the reality is that what we do every day at the CDP is where the rubber hits the road.
Helping a young entrepreneur with a dream start a business by providing training, technical assistance and access to capital is how we create opportunity on the Lower Cape.
Keeping low-income families and seniors in their homes through our Housing Rehabilitation Program is how we're making a difference. We're preserving their affordable homes for the next generation, and often making them more energy efficient too.
What is happening in communities across the country - neighbors helping neighbors, embracing and valuing diversity, caring about our fragile environment - makes for stronger communities. Our work at the CDP is built on these values and this is how we'll build a stronger and healthier Lower Cape community too.

We're holding information sessions on two upcoming dates - Friday, December 2nd from 1-2:30 PM at the Wellfleet Council on Aging and Tuesday, December 13th from 1:30-3:00 PM at the Truro Council on Aging.
Funds are available to eligible residents to pay for critical home repairs, like:

Orleans Winter Farmers' Market Returns
 It's BACK! We're pleased to announce the return of the Orleans Winter Farmers' Market for its third season. And this season, the Market is going weekly right through the winter! As a weekly Market, it will feature more vendors and a larger variety of products. The first Market is this Saturday, December 3rd from 9 AM to Noon at the Nauset Regional Middle School in Orleans.
This year the market will be co-managed with the
Orleans Farmers' Market - sponsors of the Cape's oldest farmers' market.
"We think the collaboration with the Orleans Farmers' Market will allow us to provide an even better winter market for our community," said Jay Coburn, CDP Executive Director. Each of the markets (winter and summer) have a similar mission and cross-over with vendors, joining forces to offer a weekly winter market just made sense. Together, we'll be able to provide access to fresh, nutritious local food throughout the year."
