Hillsborough Mourns the Loss of Sergeant Fred Wacker

It is with great sadness that the Township of Hillsborough announces the sudden and tragic passing of Sgt. Fred Wacker who passed away at his home unexpectedly on November 19, 2016.

Sgt. Wacker was an eighteen year veteran who had served in many capacities, most recently as the supervisor of the Traffic Bureau. He was a highly skilled officer who specialized in the investigation of traffic crashes. He was a long serving member of the Somerset County Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team.

During his career, Sgt. Wacker was the recipient of fourteen commendations for exemplary police service. Included among these was an award for his role in the apprehension of armed homicide suspects. He also received thirty four letters of gratitude from the public he served.

Personally, Sgt. Wacker will be remembered as an exceptional police officer and loyal friend. Most importantly he will be remembered as a devoted father and husband.

Finally, Chief Powell wishes to publicly acknowledge the Franklin, Manville and Montgomery Police Departments who rendered assistance during this difficult time, as well as all of the Hillsborough Fire Departments, Rescue Squad and Office of Emergency Management.
Hillsborough Township Joins the 'Movember' Movement

At the November 22nd Township Committee Meeting, the Mayor and Township Committee recognized the Movember Men's Health Awareness Movement and urged all men to become aware of their risks for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues, and to undertake regular screenings for early detection, talk to their health care providers about treatment options if diagnosed, and to support other men in becoming more aware of the need to take care of their health.

The mustaches in November (or "Movember") campaign has spawned a global health movement by starting conversations about men's health and by raising  millions of dollars worldwide to support prostate and testicular cancer research.

Within the Township of Hillsborough, many Township employees and residents have abandoned shaving for the month of November to join the Movember Men's Health Awareness cause.  Each year during the month of November, men across the globe are encouraged to band together and grow mustaches to promote and raise awareness of men's health issues.  M en in the United States have a 1 in 7 chance of getting prostate cancer and 1 in 5 men will experience a mental health issue this year.  Movember is committed to raising awareness about these and other men's health issues and their effect on fathers, sons, brothers, uncles and husbands across the United States and the world.

Castle Park Renovations Complete - The Park is OPEN

Earlier this fall the Castle Park, located at the Municipal Complex, underwent a makeover.  After nearly 400 man hours and the purchase of a Little Tikes Playground Ship, the renovations are complete.

The park was originally constructed in 1992-93 with the assistance of the community as depicted by the family names surrounding fencing of the playground.

"This playground is a focal point here on the grounds of the Municipal Complex.  These renovations allow for continued use and hours of fun for our children to enjoy," stated Mayor DelCore.  Earlier today Mayor DelCore and other Township Officials cut the ribbon for the park's re-opening.

The campaign runs from Wednesday November 23rd through Sunday November 27th.

Hillsborough Rotary Club Organizes Volunteer Event to Pack Holiday Gifts for Troops Abroad
Public Is Invited to Participate in Packing Event at Hillsborough YMCA

For our troops serving abroad, a package filled with favorite foods and toiletries from home is usually at the top of their holiday wish lists.  To help make those wishes come true, The Rotary Club of Hillsborough is once again joining up with Operation Shoebox New Jersey to host the 5th Annual Christmas Packing Event on Saturday, December 3rd, from 10:30 AM to 2 PM, at the Hillsborough YMCA (19 East Mountain Road, Hillsborough, NJ). Members of the community are invited to participate in this special event to assemble the gift packages.

"The holiday season is a particularly difficult time for military to be away from home and family," noted Hillsborough Rotary Club President, Abed Medawar, "and receiving a package from home filled with familiar items goes a long way in keeping up morale."
