Warm wishes for the festive season! We are deeply grateful for the support and encouragement the Museum's friends have shown. We have enjoyed the opportunity to share various programs and exhibitions throughout the past year and, above all, to contribute to the arts here at Bowdoin and beyond. We look forward to seeing you as we toast the conclusion of 2016 with music, film, and a new look at the legacy of St. Anthony. Happy Holidays!

Art and Resolution, 1900 to Today
Closing April 16, 2017
The dual meaning of "resolution," as both coming-into-view and as a means of overcoming conflict defines artistic responses to the historic transformations of the twentieth century, a period marred by world wars, financial collapses, environmental degradation, and the violation of human rights. Works selected for the exhibition visualize resolution and its conceptual underpinnings, and seek to act as agents of resolution through visual culture.

OPENING SOON
The Temptation of Saint Anthony
Opening December 6, 2016
Saint Anthony (ca. 251-356), often regarded as the founder of Christian monasticism, was a hermit in the Egyptian desert who, according to his biographer Athanasius of Alexandria, was tormented by supernatural appearances. This exhibition presents renderings of Saint Anthony's visions since the late medieval period.

Unveiling The Battle of Gettysburg
On Wednesday, December 7th, we invite you to a special program to celebrate the recent gift of Isaac White Fisher Eaton's The Battle of Gettysburg to the Museum. This large painting was created in the 1880s to commemorate Maine's contribution to that pivotal Civil War battle. Eaton was from Bowdoinham, Maine, and served in a unit that saw action at Gettysburg.

Art Beyond the Museum: June Lei '18
In this piece, BCMA intern June Lei '18 reflects on the powerful impact of the arts can have not only within the Museum, but across campus.
What is the role of art on a college campus? Today's educational institutions are challenged to preserve their historical legacies while simultaneously carving a learning space for debate, revision, and intellectual engagement.

Student Choice: Blanche Froelich '19
Of the many artifacts in the BCMA's collection, the Assyrian reliefs hold a special place in my heart. These reliefs, carved between 875 BCE and 860 BCE in the city of Kahlu (present day Iraq), are five of over 200 polychromatic reliefs created to adorn the place of Emperor Ashurnasirpal II. They were collected by Dr. Henri Byron Haskell (Medical School of Maine, 1855) and arrived at Bowdoin in 1860 as the first objects in the BCMA's ancient collection.
